The Nvidia 7800 GTx is clocked at 400 MHz. That is 100MHz slower than the ATI Xenos. The decision to replace the cell processor (as the GPU) with the 7800 GTx was a poor decision on sony's part, but the development of the Cell Processor alone cost Sony $400 million to develop, which put them behind in getting more titles early on for the system. A very costly marketing mistake.

Sony did not discontinue market production for the PS2 until quite some time after PS3's release.
