  • Used to listen to this in the Army...great D&D song...LOL

  • My fav Glass Tiger song!

  • I think only of "Sully" suffering after dragged off a ridge in France.

  • This was my favorite song when I was 5!

  • great lyrics. i am a songwriter myself and i know how difficult it is to write lyrics

  • @dondonmollaneda i find writing riffs harder lol

  • the 80's is the best decade musically.

  • 80s music is coming back

  • Cool, I heard the song on the radio - way back when I was in High School.

  • Great song.

  • Takes me back to when I was attending journalism school for the Navy...ah, the days of DINFOS at Ft. Benjamin Harrison!

  • FUCK DE 90'S AND 00'S!!! 80'S RULES FOREVER!!!!

  • super

  • The very first album I ever bought for myself!

  • they are more then a one hit wonder, they had a lot of hits, not just "don't forget me when I'm gone,"

  • so magical and moving.

  • Too bad local radio never played this song when the album came out, I think it would have done much better. Love this song, never heard til found it on You Tube.

This song is based on the 93rd Highland Regiments defense against Russian Cavalry at the Battle Of Balaclava in 1854 which originated the quote "Thin red streak tipped with a line of steel" later condensed into the more familiar phrase "The Thin Red Line".

  • why this was never a huge hit is a complete mystery to me , brilliant song

  • Awesome song!!! and Video!!! i miss these guys!!! brings back memories!!

  • At the Drift!

  • Sometimes I wish I could go back to the late '80's and just live it over and over. The best times of my life.

  • Just Enjoy. My absolute favourite unknown here in Sweden, Canadian Rock Band... :)

  • So eine geniale Wirkung, die der Track damals auf meine Ohren und Verfassung erzeugt hat - wow!!!

  • I remember this was my favorite group when I was in middle school. I would take my Teen Beat magazine to school and look at the pics of Glass Tiger during most of my classes. I will never forget that!

  • I'm 23... Dear god what happened to the music industry... " Just because it's change, doesn't mean it's evolution..."

  • I couldn't have said it better myself. The music of today's generation is pure garbage.

  • underated

  • What I find amusing is where I heard this song six months ago...someone was using it for their Mechwarrior fan video.

    Not bad at all actually.

  • this has the best guitar playing ever

  • The song by Glass Tiger "Thin Red Line" is about the Battle of Balaclava in the Crimean War in 1854. Kedikoi is also spelt Kadikoi and is a small village. Drawn up in front of it were the Highlanders (Rory's is a common referrence to the Scottish). Claidemaugh is a dubious spelling of claymore, an english word which is a basket hilted sword and a metaphor for martial valour. The "Thin Red Line" of only several hundred Highlandes and allies saw off approximately 2,500 Russian cavalry.

  • @CaptRavenous Thanks for the cool info -- not only is this a great video by Glass Tiger, it appears that it also tells a story of a real historic event.

  • @Hockeyboy40 I think this was supposed to be in 1812 Upper Canada or Waterloo Belgium. I could be wrong.

  • I saw them at the Calgary Stampede this year, and they were as good as they ever were, best show I have seen in a long time.

  • I grew up to this song and this was my most fave band back in the 80's.... wish they had music like this again! at least you can understand it, not like todays music where they got "country" and "pop" all mixed together :s

  • Great song

  • Love this song..the lyrics are fantastic in this..their sound unmistakeable.. I have to be honest I DO not miss the 80's hair.. it was a fire hazard and really bad for the ozone..clothes were fun.. Lol.. the best times ever!

  • i love this song, so under-appreciated!

  • The days when MTV acually played music videos. God I miss the 80's and the 90's!

  • SDCDIABLO, those are the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders - the men that always made Napoleon's blood run cold when he heard their pipes play!!

  • what soldiers is this supposed to be portraying...

  • That scene 3:33-3:38 always gives me chills. The lifeless, open eyes, swallowed in shadow.

  • This song makes me so proud of my roots. So patriotic, really is an anthem of nationalism.

  • red is for the heros and green is for the brave.......best line in a song !

  • Glass Tiger, is one of the BEST groups that came out of the eighties, that ever came out into the world of music. To every member of,"Glass Tiger", thank you for music pf your soul

  • Best ale drinking song you'll ever hear in a Toronto pub! I speak that as a former Canadian now American in Houston. I miss Toronto sometimes.

  • The Thin Red Line is a term for a thinly spread military unit holding firm against attack. The term originates in a journalist's description (a "thin red streak tipped with a line of steel") of the appearance of the red-coated 93rd (Highland) Regiment as they stood before (and repelled) a vastly superior force of Russian cavalry at the Battle of Balaclava during the Crimean War.

  • One hit Wonder?? Thin red Line has powerful tracks: Thin Red, Dont Forget Me, You're what I look For, Someday, I Will BE There, C'mon!!!

  • When I first got this album when it came out I loved this song. I've never seen the video until now. Wow!! I'm blown away...now the song makes sense! Thanks for sharing, and I'll agree -- this is a great band and a great song.

  • Fucking Awesome then. Fucking Awesome now.

  • i was 12 when this came out !

    memory's are made of songs.....

  • Anybody know who is the lady in that clip?

  • A real 80s video and the best one from Glass Tiger, in my opinion. Good song too!

  • My most fave by Alan and the boys! Remember it was one of the first retro songs I ever got into listening as a kid back in those days!

  • I own this album on vinyl specifically for this song. One of the greatest never-hits ever.

  • IF anyone, and I do mean anyone could advise me where to go or give me tablature for this song for guitar, I would really appreciate it. Love this song, listen to it everyday.

  • Castles, Scottish battles, synthetic bagpipes: Canadian nostalgia at its best.

  • This song used to be my fave back when I was 9. It takes me back. Good days, great music............

  • awsome

  • Was this vid about a particular battle??

  • @eden1963 it has its origins in Scottish history

  • This was my fave song as a 4 year old!

  • Killer Tunes.....Alan do a Redux!

  • This is good stuff. I love it.

  • Great song

  • I loved glass tiger as a teen! I saw them when I was 14...rawk

  • This place reminds me of Charleville

castle in Ireland. Even though the

    video takes place in Scottland.

    methodistgirl

  • is that the famous Black Watch Regiment? ;)

  • what you know about that.?????

  • @bearwalkerr lol it isnt actually you can tell by the uniform sorry :x

  • god bless scotland. we are the people

  • that we are. proud people

    cheers Mickey MacKenna .

  • This is my fav. Glass Tiger song. Its funny that they are considered a one hit wonder group(Don't Forget Me When I'm Gone).I remember this song playing on the radio back in '86 or '87 and I LOVED it.Couldn't understand why it wasn't a big hit in the US

  • @justme632 My fave hit too. But this is Scottish history. Why would it be a hit? Because it is history. (History as hits? Oh, heaven forbid!)

  • i played this album every day after school! this song popped in my head the other day after 20 years or so.... LOVE IT!!!

  • the guitar player works at my school!!

  • I love to see the youth appreciate the music so many of us on this board grew up with. My son lives with his mother in another state but we talk on the phone. He tells me he likes this new band called 38 Special. I laughed and told him that was a band I grew up with and loved. So funny how things come back full circle. I had cable when Glass Tiger first came out and it was MTV where I first heard this song. Every hit they had I loved!!

  • I grew up listening to these guys as well I seen them in concert with honeymoon suite on their big prize tour!!

  • @75630KaraokeStar hold on loosely

  • This brings back memories!! I wore out 3 copies of this cassette back in the day...

  • forgot they did this one too lol. all good stuff

  • this song is thin red line by glass tiger

Yes they did this one song. this is their

Debut Album: thin red line the song was

number one on the pop charts for some

    time

  • after all these years i still love this song

  • Awesome song. Aged really well.

  • The harmonies, guitar, and violins are so beautiful in this song! I love the marching snare drum, and the man calling out...This song fills the room with musical confidence! I remember when I got the album...yes, ALBUM! a time in my life that I will never forget...The most perfect song. PERIOD.

  • I remember when they were popular. I didn't like them. But I did like this one song. (But I had a soft spot for all thing Scottish back then).

  • same for me exactly

  • Great song, cool video, great album. Met Alan last year at chapters, really cool guy, they still perform small gigs now and again.

  • cool song, but who is that strange women all the time...

  • 22 years later and still a cool song.

  • ok, im only 14, and i have an old cassette of them, i used to listen to them all the time lol

  • My high school years at Royal West Academy are all coming back to me....Canadian music was so good back then.

  • The lyrics are definitely challenging to comprehend. (I think of it as a British influence along the likes of a Howard Jones, or Nik Kershaw).

  • this is an awsome song, the british army back then was unstopable.

  • The battle is between?

  • The battle was between Britland and Russia.

  • Cody from MP'S. I now know why you're so hooked up to this 80's band. So very sorry for your loss back then. You need to let go and move on buddy.

    Your friend Rick.

  • My dad is Al Connely and he told me one of the girls that come out of the witches skirt said to the band in a English accent: "I think shay farted" ROFL

  • If you like this, check out Crazy by Icehouse form Australia.

  • Heh...about time I saw the original video for this. The last time I heard this song, someone had used this song for a *choke*Robotech*choke* video.

And then there was the Firefly/Serenity video someone did using this song (but then their account got removed).

  • its been 20 yrs since i heard this song last...WOW

  • Classic...

  • this is awesome band, we lost a sister last year and her favorite somg was "don't forget me when I'm gone" We are going to remember her when the band plays at Crabfest is Kincolith...Can't wait.

  • By the way Alen Frew was and still is a cutie!

  • Thanks for posting this video, i'll put it in my favorite. I once organized a Glass Tiger concert at Concordia University. They were great both on and off stage. Glass Tiger is my favorite Canadian Band.

  • Thanks dude - brings back memories of T.O. to a (Former) Canadian.

  • I saw them Live onece. THEY WERE AWESOME, everyone was screaming for more. I love their song's, but, this one is my fav. xD

  • what soilders is this song about, either British or British Canadian...

  • "The Thin Red Line" was first use as a term during a battle in the Crimean War, I believe, where British soldiers were sent to cover a wide front with few troops, and still managed to push back a Russian cavalry charge.

  • Good, except the Russians were our allies. Crimea was all about trying to help the Russians get access to a port since they were buggered in the east by the Germans. I think the kilts kind of give it away that these are Scottish troops.

  • in this video more than likely scottish fighting for England given the look but some Canadian regiments wore kilts too. i think alot of commonwealth units wore kilts.

  • those look like Blackwash regiment from Canada, the percusion riffle makes them right for Crimean war(probably first line as they where colonials troops folowing british mindset...)or could be from Scotland.Oddly, uniforms at this period sometimes took weird paterns as the french "Zouave" uniform from Algeria for all their infantry

Is that a young Mary Walsh?

  • Cool! It's like a time travel. I think, I still have the LP from this band. ;)

  • Wow. I'm having a total 80's flashback. This was my absolute favorite band in the 80s and this is their best video. It's elegant, sensitive and totally classy.Made me proud to be Canadian. Thanks for putting it on YouTube. I never thought I would ever see it again.

  • yeah but alan frew the lead singer was born in scotland.c'mon the mighty scots

  • Wasnt a well known band in Europe but I managed to get a c-cassette "glass tiger" at a service station and liked it a lot.

Havent seen it for decades. Thank you for adding.

  • awesome song... love it

  • i love this song soo much! i love his voice!

  • THIS SONG ROCKS! his voice is so powerful. and the guitars at the beginning are neither too much or too little. PERFECT!

  • Old school military. Lovin it

  • it reminds me of big country

  • Lead singer Alan Frew wrote a self-help motivational book, maybe it got him through the battle ;)

  • They're using percussion muskets as it's the Crimean, not Napoleonic War. At Balaclava, 25th Oct 1854, the 93rd Highlanders faced a charge by Russian cavalry in line - and won. The phrase thin red line comes from a contemporary news report which is quoted in the song "A thin red streak tipped with a line of steel".

  • It's nice to read the comments about the people who starred in this video. I loved this song when it first came out and I still love it. Canada rocks!!!

  • Oops, I meant 1987 in the post below. Sorry!

I watched this again, just noticed that they're carrying percussion-cap rifles. They sure didn't have those in the Napoleonic era! Still, a great video, though!

  • That being said, shouldn't the Rory's have formed square to take the charge of the cavalry? Still loved the video.

  • THANKS for posting this. I'd never seen the video before. I remember these guys played at Grad Night at DisneyWorld in 1997, I saw them play then, it was the first time I'd heard it. They came and went pretty fast, but they were good...

  • Oh how funny! I saw them at Grad Night at Geauga Lake amusement park in Ohio back in 1988. :)

  • long live the rorys

  • this is a freaking awesome song ever and love it!!!

  • Kurdtss - sorry - cannot see your email messages from this terminal. If you have another way to contact will reply !

  • I'm in this video (Highlander with unfeasible 'tash that watches the troops go by with the 'young lad') It was shot by EMI at Knebworth in the UK. The Gothic woman and the 'lad' were professionals; some highlanders were English Civil War re enactors; moonlighting TA soldiers; and me and a more famous chum from the National Army Museum.'Background' highlanders came from the job centre - but in the one day avaliable never learned to march or shoot: but made good 'dead' bodies.

  • Cool. My mother actually dated the guitarist, Al, for a few years. I recall one of their videos which features a young woman in a red dress. That's her.

  • This Song Kicks Motherfuckin Ass For The 86"

  • The Thin Red Line was an AWESOME album. I really liked "Closer To You", as well, which was never released, though used on Yankee tv during NFL highlights!

  • Please post "Animal Heart"!

  • Can someone explain the meaning of the video to me, please? I have always loved this song!!

  • Isn't this video all about the famous "Balaclava Battle" in the crimean peninsula ?

  • this is a brill video nice 1

  • they are awesome live!

  • i meet them in gan ontario canada

  • As a military history maniac, I can't help it : I like this video a lot! And it is made by Glass Tiger, a band I used to listen during my teenage years. Rock on Canada, my country!

  • i luv Canadian rock

  • That is strange but that is so beautifull to see sharped men marching in rank, at the sound of drums, towards fights for dying...

  • after school song...

  • good band.too bad it's short live.they are even better doing live concert,just like in meadowland,nj,way back then...good memories too.:}

  • I grew up in a small town settled by ppl of Scottish heritage. I had to learn how to highland dance and whole bit...lol. This song definately brings back memories of fifth grade and that little town.

  • great memories

  • Cool song... brings back memories of grade 11. Very cool video

  • Too bad they didn't feature a claymore in this video. Does anyone knows what one looks like?

  • A Claymore is a two handed broad sword a slashing cutting weapon. It is usually about 3-4 ft long and heavy.

  • Awesome song.

  • Unlike other videos from the 80's, this one actually was GOOD and helped tell the story.

  • My sister used to play this song all day long when we were younger... Brings back a lot of good memories.

  • Thanks again! They should give you an honourary Juno for posting all the best of CanRock on YouTube!
