  • Q buenos recuerdos!!! :(

  • Oh shit those noises... *Foams at the mouth.*

  • just watching scares the shit out of me. this game is probably the reason why I don't like FPS.

  • Oh man, I still remember when my mom bought me and my brother this game on floppy from the bargain bin and we went to Taco Bell afterwards. Best day ever.

  • The first FPS of ever

  • is it me or is the perspective a bit off?

  • This game is kinda like batman comics of the 80s: Dark, but the colour scheme does no justice.

  • 1992. Yeah Wolf3D fans. id was around BEFORE 1994.

  • This game scared the shit out of me when I was 8! I still love it!

  • @Zyrrixxy Yeah scary as shit :p it was one of my first floppy disc games good old times

  • Man this game used to terrify me. Late nights playing this as a child is comparable to Dead Space.

  • Shooting walls the game.

  • is it me or the does the sounds effects sound like ear raping farts

  • those things used to scare the shit out of me.

  • this game used to scare the bejezus outta me lol.... thanks for upping this

  • Comment removed

  • the sound - fap fap fap

  • hey is it just me or the engine looks bette? because you can clearly see the angled wall but not on Wolf3D!

I want a little bit of explanations please

  • I used to play this when I was about 3 years old. =P

  • wolfenstein 3d 1100 lol

  • I'm glad I found your channel, a lot of your games are nostalgic to me. It's fun to watch you play.

  • this game scared the shit out of me when i was a little kid:P

  • I was on vgmaps.com when I saw this and remember playing it when I was a kid. These stupid spoiled brats these days dont appreciate what they have these days.

  • How i used to love this game...

  • Shoot the pink windows! SHOOT'EM!!

  • 6:51 Ankle deep in guano.

Worse than being knee deep in the dead?

  • I remember watching my mom play this game. she played all the first person shooters of that time.

  • funny how this game is probably like 5 MB when cod 4 is like 15 GB

  • @MrGerolf

well its true all you need is a few floppy discs

  • Those of you kids out there who say "Call of Duty Is better" well, this is where CoD came from.

  • @TheDoopliss2 thank you!

  • @MrGerolf But they are kinda right, CoD is new and improved :\

  • Awsome, the first FPS Huh?

  • strafe is not detected ;)

  • I remember in the good old days going playing this game for hours on end in my garage.

  • This game wasn't made by ID, this is the sequel. also, you play like a tard.

  • @maxamatosis it was made by id.

  • @MrGerolf No, only the first game in the series was made by ID, the rest in the series were developed by Gamer's Edge/Softdisk. That's why it said "Gamer's Edge" not "iD Software" when you booted the game up. Kinda weird that you missed that.

  • @maxamatosis i didnt miss it, Softdisk was ID.

  • Better than Black Ops. :)

  • @Etkar2008 nonoonno

  • Back in the days when you went to a pc store and got thrown shareware.... Good memories.

  • @cooldude2085 this game should have been credited to be the first FPS other than Woflenstein 3D.

  • hey, Dosbox is alot like Dos first unzip your file into a folder called catacombs place the folder on the C drive. open the folder and find the .exe file remember the name! In dosbox type: "mount c c:\catacombs" no quotes this mounts the game now type: C:\ to change Z:\ into C:\ Now type the name of the .exe file without the file extension example: for Wolf3d.exe type Wolf3d now the game will start and you can play! enjoy I tried sending this as a reply but it wouldnt show up
  • So can anyone tell me how i can play this game on my pc?

Do i need some type of emulator?

    If so which one?

  • @kvj1989 You need DOSbox which is a MS DOS emulator. Using it can be tricky since you really have to type in DOS codes to play the game but it isn't that hard really. Watch some tutorials on it.

  • @TheRetroZombie I have downloadet a dosbox and instalt and it seems to work but i don't know how to play the game on it.

It seems you have to type in some codes or something.

I got The Catacomb Abyss on a zip file so yeah i dont kow if thats right or not.

  • back then there's no such thing as strafing

  • back then there's no such thing as strafing

  • this is known as the first FPS ever, that´s what I heard

  • @OrcWyvern Certainly the first game I ever played, far too young around 4-5, probably caused the zombie obsession I now have.

What suprises me is how much better these graphics are than doom or hexen or something. I bought all the id games last year, no abyss tho :(

  • the only imperfection in this gem is the ability to strafe and turn at the same time.

  • I tried shareware version of this as a kid and found it to be bad. One factor is that it had bad - or possibly no - sound.

  • This game owns

  • This came out before Wolfenstein. :O

    I didn't know that.

  • it sure is scarier than doom 3

  • Couldn't they have used a better sound effect for the shooting? It sounds like he's taking a dump...a nasty one

  • @ArgyG its an old game what did u expect

  • Couldn't they have used a better sound effect for the shooting? It sunds like he's taking a dump...a nasty one

  • the grandfather of FPS?!

  • this must be the game of the year 2010

  • i played this with my cousin when we were little and she flipped out when a zombie snuck up on me haha.

  • @2HornDogs i played this with my cousin too when we were little:))

  • My mom hated this game because when I played it I shrieked like a banshee everytime I turned around and saw a zombie.

  • fucking awesome graphics for 1991

  • @viciogames 1992 actually.

  • SoftDisk = id Software?

  • @Arcadeprehacked Softdisk published it but iD devolped it much like Apogee did for Wolf 3D

  • there should be a SDL port

  • I have.

  • omfg that walking sound i cant stand it

  • I used to be fucking scared at this game, and now... I still am!

  • i remember playing this game for like 9 years ago. It was so fucking scary to me :P

Still i liked to play it with my dad and with my sister who helped me cuze i was too young to do everything myself

  • looks good for one of the first fps ever :)

  • Haha! I rememer some light blue -and green ogres in this game which were so scary that I didn't let them take damage. It was level 4 or 5 if I remember correctly.

  • Holy !@#!@ this is even older than wolfenstein? I remember playing this game ages and ages ago. I remember the graphics were of pretty low quality (EGA) and i compared it to wolfenstein, but wow, '91!!

  • Yeah old memories, i played this with my friend.

  • This game is better than Quake 4

  • @LockedPig Quake 4 is good itself, idk why people take a shit on this, it's a good continue of Quake 2... Quake 3 is real bullshit and not even a game, it's DM match and I have no clue why it's called Quake 3...

  • This is one art style I definitely don't miss.

  • so...wolfenstein 3D was not the first? o.o

  • Nope. Too many peoples think that first fps was doom (or wolfenstein3d) , but actually it was catacomb abyss.

  • @aure232 Wrong again. Before that, there was Hovertank 3D, also made by id.

  • the demon in the wall at 0:50 looks like doom's pinky demon

  • omg im gonna pick up this one... such a nice lookin game... I still have the PCFORMAT magazine reviewing it!

  • actually really pretty good graphics considering it's age.

  • @YuushaKaiser And EGA!

  • nope the first FPS was Maze War back in 1974

  • lol, what it is? O_o I only know that's in 1974 don't has NO ANY PC\TV games :P only a lot time after, was made ping-pong or tetris.

Anyway, Catacomb AByss was the FIRST FPS ever made, firster than Wolfinstein 3D

  • You're all fucking idiots, mantax55 is right.

  • stfu... :\

  • actually the first fps was maze war which was created in 1974 but it was only available to the publc in 1985.

  • @mantax55 Maze War wasn't a true FPS game.

  • It was also the first FPS to show the player's hand

  • graphics are good...

  • Well, actually this game is not developed by ID Software and its not made in 1991. Catacomb 3D is.

    From Wiki:

"Catacomb 3-D was followed by three games, in the so called Catacomb Fantasy Trilogy. They were not developed by id Software, though they were involved in some of the games."

"Catacomb Abyss was the sequel to Catacomb 3-D, and featured the same main character in a new adventure. It was the only game in the series that was released as shareware. It was released by Softdisk in 1992."

  • Man those sound effects make my ears want to bleed

  • This is one of the BEST fps i play in my life...

  • Everyone! Fucking read "Masters of Doom" by David Kushner. It's about Carmack and Romero, and reading about their games and seeing them on youtube is fucking awesome!

  • Wow 0.o, an old fps game that came before wolfenstein! I got to try this sometime :D. Thanks for the upload!

  • Awesome sound effects, lol. No this game looks pretty good for early '90s.

  • I like the lightening effects. Heretic monsters resemble these.

  • I remember receiving this game for free because of some club or something my dad belonged to

  • i think my dad was in the same club

  • Oh man, that was so scary... I wet my pants...

Not really, I remember playing this game a long, long time ago :P

  • i played it!!! i was a children .. and i was scared XD

  • nice one!

  • Hahaha, ankle deep in guano. Good times good times

  • Wow this is great, I was like 6 years old when I played this game! Brings back memories...

  • i found the abandon ware version of this and was amazed that id made something like this before doom,i almost beat it but i died near the end this game is worth any gamers time if they play it and the first levels did startle me but it wasn't actually scary.i seemed to have gotten to like the final boss ,but it was actually his doubles and i got my backside handed to me i should play it again and see if i can win this time, evil wizard your going down! Also this game is like heretics greatgrandad

  • lol... the footstep sound sounds like someone using a dodgeball like a drum.

  • wish i lived in the 90s, i was too young :( everything was like so much cooler lol

  • HOLY CRAP!!! CATACOMBS!!

lol oh man what a flashback! I remember when my family got our first computer back in 1992 and they gave us this game on a big old DISKETTE! remember the B: Drive diskettes? holy crap....we had to log into dos and it took us 10 years to figure it out as kids.

Great game! I played this thing well into 1997! yep, shameful I know, I was still playing dos games even when the PS-ONE came out!

  • I always wanted to see this game. I love the CGA graphics (though the game looks at least EGA) as a nod to the original Catacomb. That game was very awesome. :)

  • This is my favorite game ever!!!

  • The Catacomb Abyss was created by some of the main people that later became ID Software.

  • Awesome game, the first few levels scared the crap out of me when I first played it.

  • This game was released when i was born XD

  • I was 5 when I played this game... I was scared!! =S

  • oooh, this game made me carsick as hell

  • Holy shit nostalgia bomb.

  • Curse of the Catacombs was my first FPS!

  • heeey, i had this! i spent so much time playing this, back in the day.

  • this game is amazing, i really enjoyed playing it.

some of the greatest levels are something with "..orc"(a damn labirynth!!) and the ones in catacombs where those gigant eyes were hiding behind some fake walls..

    thanks for sharing this video.

  • This game scared the bajeebus out of me when I was a kid. I wouldn't play it without my dad in the room. Thanks for posting.

  • the sound effects hurt my ears! Great vid btw, youtube has everything

  • Great Game!

  • This was one of my favorite games. Such a classic. You simply can't top any of these old games. Their untouchable.

  • this is like hexen beyond heretic .. -_- <.< John carmack -_-

  • I'd like to suggest to take look at Ultima Undrworld - came out a couple of months before wolfenstein ;)

  • ups i ment "ultima undErworld" of course...

  • Yeah, so calling Catacomb Abyss the first textured 3d, is not exactly correct. What it is, is the first textured 3D shooter.

  • As you can see in my videos, Hovertank 3D didn't have any textures :)

  • this is interesting, I guess it was the sh!t back then ;D

  • I remember/owned this game.

  • If the sound could be better, the game would be better than Wolfenstein 3d :)

  • Ive been playing this a little.

Its interesting to see the games before wolf
