memories..... I am a happy human being after not hearing this song 4 sooo long I glad someone decided to put this on u-tube...this was one of the best track I think the Isley brother put out....
Staying at home all day taking care of a 23 month old and a 2 week old.........LETS SEE ONE OF YOU FELLAS DO THAT........ not to mention after being up all night with the 2 week old so ur HUSBAND CAN SLEEP ALL COMFORTABLE IN THE BED BECAUSE HE HAS TO BE AT WORK @530...........then u can talk to me about work.
A wonderful husband who supports his wife won't have to hear Vanessa sing this song! A thoughtful wife won't overdo the overtime! The wise father won't let his daughter near a man who sings this as an excuse!
The song "Summer Breeze" was done by Seals & Crofts and later redone by the Isleys. "Work to do" was an original by the Isleys. It was written and produced by the group. Just some food for thought!
@TitusSviatoslav I agree with your ratings largely, however I would have rated the 90s onward even lower, and maybe give the 70s Pure Gold LOL. Also wikipedia lists this as written by the Isleys, but the other versions are good too. AWB's may be my favorite. wish I could find the Isleys Live version of Love the One You're with. It was much better than stephen stills version, which was also good.
....another one I remember...I was 16 years old, just got my driver's license drivin my dad's St. Moritz blue firemist 1972 Cadillac Sedan DeVille......couldn't tell me "nothin".....where'd the good old days go?
I remember when I heard the version The Average White Band did back in the 70's , and it was good , but when I heard the ORIGINAL no contest . Pure gold !
this is one of my favorites by the isleys in a list of 20 songs its true i got work to do sometimes 96 hours a week and as usual no understanding in the family but i love it
@iseeu36 Not only basement parties, all parties have great mood those times,I speak from my time and that's mid 80's and early 90's,todays kids are diferent, bye from Macedonia!
@TitusSviatoslav So in your world people would still be producing 70's rock and r&b for the next 500 years and nothing else. Time moves on, live with it.
TY PalmBeach1028 - I was running on presumption. As a youngster I (didn't) thought the S&C version came out first and afterward the Isley Brothers. My bad indeed.
This song will not shut all wives up! But nice sentiment. Seals & Croft wrote it, but this version and AWB rival each other. Each with a different pace and a different vibe. All good...
@dalosophy Seals & Croft did not compose "Work to do" They're two talented fellows. But they did not write this particular piece of music. Although it has a chordal progression akin to "Summer Breeze," Which is a Seals, and Croft melody. Beautiful rendition from both groups(AWB & The Isleys) as far as I'm concerned!!!
I'm a big Isley fan (yes, it's their song), but I happen to also like three other versions of this song because they all offer something different. AWB upped the tempo, Vanessa Williams of course, gives it a woman's touch and a lesser known version by the Main Ingredient puts another spin on it. I enjoy remakes that don't just copy the original arrangement. Long as the original gets it's props.
@Fairexchange41 Yes, indeed, The Isley Brothers are in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. They were inducted back in 1992, the same as Johnny Cash, Sam & Dave, The Jimi Hendrix Experience, Booker T & the MGs, and The Yardbirds. Quite a class, isn't it?
With all due respect, it was when AWB covered this song in '74 that it really began to get noticed —And, it's easy to see why —I mean this is nice. What's not to like? It's the Isleys. But, next to AWB's it's rather tepid —AWB's blistering funk rhythm, soaring horns and powerful vocal attack bring out the magnificence...
@boostmeup Now that's an intelligent response —Something you'd never say if we were face to face in conversation —I know enough to articulate an opinion in a meaningful way. What I stated is, in part, fact, as the commercial success of this song was much more far-reaching with AWB —And, the rest are my feelings about the song —How music comes to one's experience is subjective —You ought to know that. I've been playing for 55 years —I don't think I need your approval...
I've always been an Isley Brothers fan and have always loved this tune. I never heard Vanessa Williams or AWB sing the song until just now. Their versions are good too (except for the rap interlude in Vanessa's piece--I HATE rap!!). I don't think that the AWB version is markedly different from this one. Ppl who prefer it must have a preference for AWB is all. I love the original.
@sinuous88 and vannesa shuts up the husbands then i guess...and if that's not enough you may not be able to play the song for her cause she's out cheating from neglect...
The Isley Bros. are another band this is so underated, there's absolutely no words for it. As far as rock, R&B & pop markets, the Isleys have contributed emphatically. They got no accolades.
Can you believe that the isley brothers have been makin super hits since the late fifties, and have some the best rock stories in the Rock genre. @missmadison08 madison girl i'm trying to tell you. i've been blasting it all day lol. it empowers men. they always played the instrumental on the show but i never thought it was an actual tune. you know that opening song with the trumpets they play whenever they come from a break is a song too? you should check it out. its so cool lol. ts monk - bon, bon vie (good, good life)
During youth in the Bronx, Bro Marvin dated a very nice woman in my building. Coming around in his 'pimp style, rust colored LD (Eldorado) with the diamond in the back and the fake wheel on the back :-), he always, always stopped to give autographs and speak nice and gently to all of us. No one bothered him or showed disrespect. Diabetes is nothing to play with so if some if you have this challenge respect it so you can give yourself the best chance to overcome it. Peace. Two fingers!
this is the song for whenever your wife or girlfriend starts to complain, when they do, get the biggest stereo you can find and play it so loud so you can tune their voices out lol
Lost in the shuffle is the Isley Manifesto, that the world is a dog-eat-dog darwinian dystopia up for grabs to anyone with the moxie to take it. Just throw a quite glance at their discography, with song titles like Climbin' Up the Ladder, Winner Takes All, Go For Your Guns, Fight The Power.
Vanessa Williams did an excellent version of this with some wording changed to reflect a woman's point of view.

this is the song for whenever your wife or girlfriend starts to complain, when they do, get the biggest stereo you can find and play it so loud so you can tune their voices out lol
