  • It sounds like poop taking a crap. This is absolutely terrible!!!

  • Fair enough they were a little bit rough around the edges with the performance but at least they have the passion and balls to go all out.

  • this is shoddy

  • Comment removed

  • best live tv music performance of all time. hands down.

  • This clip makes me understand why Jim Ward felt the need to strike off and do his own thing.

  • Don't let anyone listen to this if they've never heard of them before!

  • bet these guys can party like fuck..

  • This is some dumb crap..no matter how you put it. Trying to be different is a good thing but trying to hard to be so and calling it art as an excuse is another. It's a group of guys bathed in chemicals playing with out of tune guitars. I really liked this guys before I seen them live. Another studio band...

  • Comment removed

  • I would pay a lot of money to see this live. Yes, this. It's purely amazing.

  • I demand reunion !

  • Yes the guitars are out of tune and Omar is missing every other note but this is still a fucking awesome performance.

Whoever had to play after ATDI on this episode must have been shitting themselves.

  • @spiderjerusalem100 Robbie Williams.

  • @wintdoofwint @spiderjerusalem100 HA HA HA that is fucking hilarious. As if we don't already live in a world where whoever goes before Robbie Williams makes him look a complete cunt, in fact, scrap that, he can do that on his own and has done for nigh-on 20 years. But oh my Lord, for a shot from one of the other cameras to see his face as this was going on. I'd pay good money to see that.

  • @horsehospital there's footage of it on youtube somewhere, you can see it for free. It's fantastic.

  • @wintdoofwint Just had a look and it did not take long to find it."Can my mate have his chair back please" ... as ever, Robbie Williams acting a complete cunt, out of his depth, no idea when he sees the real deal. Fuck, I can't stand him - cabaret monkey-toss offspring of a kebab and a donkey.

  • @horsehospital How is that acting as a cunt? he made a passing joke, he didn't offend anyone's dying mother.... Obviously i vastly prefer at the drive in to Robbie but people need to calm down a bit...

  • @spiderjerusalem100 Robbie Williams.

  • Sooo many sheep do not understand this band/performance. Fact is they were 5 guys making some of the most exciting music since Nirvana came out. They were also heavily on drugs and just out to go nuts. Im not pretentious but THIS IS EMOTION IN ITS PUREST FORM.

They could have changed the world at a time when kids were fixated with Linkin Park and Limp Bizkits manufactured crap. Unfortunately they imploded before they had the chance but their legacy will live on forever

  • art

  • they sound like shit.

  • @PantherOfLove thats the point, they just went on the show to cause chaos , not put on a perfect show. if you realise that before you watch it - it seems like much more fun !!

  • I was a voltahead for 2 years or so. What really turned me off was live chaos that wasn't at least logical.

  • How can you be a fan of this band and think this was a terrible performance? Their music is ALREADY angular and dissonant. It's pure attitude, in your face balls to the wall punk/post-hardcore. Whatever the top commentator said was right. This is exciting, and there are plenty of tuned, inoffensive bands that don't have half the balls or the talent these guys do.

  • Love the white guy trying to hold it together in the midst of the Latino insanity. :-)

But seriously... ROC: Top 5 records of the '00 decade. This performace? A huge suckfest.

  • Out of tune guitars is punk/rock, not bothering to play the right notes is badass, thats how I play lol. Thats why rock sucks today its full of hipster bitches that dont have the balls to fuck up. ROCK IS ABOUT FUCKING SHIT UP. And by the way relationship of command is the greatest album of the 21 century, hands down.

  • The performance EVER on Later. (Y)

  • lol you guys are so lame... if you cant go crazy and not give a shit every once in a while then this world has already broken you... my pitty to you all

  • Terrible

  • Almost descending into chaos makes you sound great, actually descending into chaos makes you sound terrible. Fortunately At the Drive in normally got the balance right and were a great band. But not this time! Anyone who thinks this is a good performance must be profoundly deaf.

  • the best thing about this was how pissed robbie williams was!

  • by far the worst performance ive ever seen, and ive seen the black eyed peas. thats fukin bad

  • This sucks. Omar was just fucking around the whole time.

  • Fuck me. This is awful. From an objective standpoint, you surely have to consider this abysmal.

  • Comment removed

  • Player 1 notes hit: 43%

  • Reminds me of everything I love about Nirvana.

  • @SteffFTW lol.

  • "did i just conveniently throw my guitar and pick up a tamborine? I think i must have."

  • I think this is the reason why Jools never called them again to the show... STILL THINK THEY ROCK

  • Breathtaking. Up there with The Sex Pistols on "So It Goes". Pity you didn't have the closing shot of the wannabe rebel Robbie Williams realising he is the safe conformist little fat boy band dancer we always knew he was.

  • @ mattsfinn YOU TELL THEM DUDE!!!Could'nt have put it better myself.

  • This is my all-time favorite performance..You gotta understand.Sometimes it is'nt about the music as much as it can be about the energy and release. The way they perform that song, expresses how the song makes you feel.It gives me goosebumps every time. That performs says ''Fuck everybody, this is my song, and this is how it makes me feel''

  • Comment removed

  • As much as I like At the Drive-In, I've never seen this as the excellent performance everyone has already claimed it is. Ward is visibly pissed off, Omar's guitar sounds horrific and Cedric's vocals sound tired and lazy. This reminds me of everything I hate about Nirvana.

  • @wpmorley01 fair enough, keep in mind one of the facets of the band is the ebb and flow of the performances yielding the nuance of each individual show. And to some, this.... well you get it

  • @thrillhouses lol, it was Robbie Williams next. Search for "at the drive-in live on later and robbie williams face" and the vid runs a bit longer.

  • If you listen to this and feel electricity pulsing through your veins and your hairs stand on end, you should listen to it again and again! If that doesn't happen and you choose to make idiotic comments about whether the guitars are in tune or not, then you need to switch this off and indulge yourself in whatever it is you're conditioned to! Something where the guitars are in tune and not offensive - God forbid anything that drags you out of your comfort zone! This is exciting. Shut the fuck up!

  • @mattsfinn2 Sorry dude, I love ATD, but it would be alot cooler if the guitars were in tune.

  • @mattsfinn2 omg but this isnt polished and completely stripped clean of any emotion or meaning how am i meant to appreciate this????

  • @Tool9395 If you can't, then don't... just be quiet and go watch something else!

  • @OriginalDrewtastic Lol someone can't understand sarcasm

  • @Tool9395 In that I graciously allow you to continue enjoying!

  • man oh man. poor jim ward (and the rest of the sparta guys, actually), trying so hard to hold this song together. they were obviously already two different bands at this point. shame. the result of this particular performance perhaps went off the rails a bit too much, but generally this approach produced amazing live results.

  • Comment removed

  • I can see why people don't like this, but I actually quite like it, surprisingly.

  • has to be in my top 5 all-time performances

  • Damn. Both the songs from Jools Holland show are utter chaos. I love it. This kind of burn your own sound to the ground because you can kind of performance is fucking punk rock. Long live it. This is not a performance for those who want to see their favorite band go the careerist route. Long live ATDI!

  • That poor Super-Sonic.

    Brilliant.

  • Comment removed

  • I'm gonna agree with the guy below me.

I really do love ATDI and Mars Volta, and they've been a huge influence on me.

But I really don't think this is a good performance.

The untuned guitar? Really? It just doesn't sound good. There's a difference between putting on a good, crazy, emotional performance...and one where your guitar is out of tune.

  • @googenshlagen There is nothing artistic about not being able to play your instrument properly. As much as I love this song, this performance was nothing more than self indulgent crap. There is a difference between art and taking the piss.

  • @googenshlagen Your in the wrong genre mate. THIS IS PUNK and if its too crazy or imperfect for you go and listen to arcade fire or any other empty headed fucktard band.

  • @MrHello435222

This has nothing to do with being imperfect or crazy. Even the fucking Ramones tuned their guitars.

  • @googenshlagen The ramones was pop punk this is post hardcore.

  • @MrHello435222

You're missing my point. Crazy performances of this song are great. But not having your guitar in tune is carelessness.

  • @MrHello435222

There is a difference between making emotional chaotic music, and making noise.

  • @googenshlagen Sonic youth I doubt have once played with in tune guitars live or not. So my point is weather or not they are in tune im headbanging to this live track as if it were the recorded album version. But whatever man their your ears you can have your opinion.

  • @MrHello435222 theyre guitars are usually in tune, thurston and lee have around 10 guitars each on tour for several tunings but theyre all in tune

  • @MrHello435222 >Calling Arcade Fire an empty headed fucktard band.

    >You are one of the most fucking retarded people I know

Why doesn't anyone realise you can like more than one style of music?

  • @googenshlagen I think it sounds good,but that's me

  • I know you're going to attack me, but, didn't this sound shitty?

I don't mean no disrespect, honestly, ATDI was a great influence to what I listen now, but attending to a Jools show just to play this way, I mean, with an Omar smashing his guitar just when the song starts and untuned it, made it sound really bad.

Anyway, they are still doing it with The Mars Volta and that is their seal.

    Cheers!

    A.

  • WE NEED THIS BACK, PUNK ROCK! Not fucking vampire weekend

  • I love how tight the whole band is except Omar and Cedric.

3:11 Omar; 'Fuck the guitar' haha

    Fucking awesome

  • Comment removed

  • They didnt mess up on purpose. Omar hit his guitar at the beginning and it became untuned. thats why he eventually gave up and just threw his guitar

  • theres a certain pleasure in purposefully fucking shit up...

  • This started shit but It got a lot better as it went on. Still, what do I know, I don't listen to this kind of music

  • Fuck, this is one of my favourite At the Drive-In videos. It's so fucking dirty and gritty and just ruthless. I mean, this is clearly something that will mostly only appeal to people who are already fans of At the Drive-In in the first place, so it shouldn't be expected to make a good first impression of the band. As for me tho, I love the shit outta this video.

  • @Jefguy This is/was my first impression of the band and I'm quite impressed.

  • Lol no wonder I haven't seen The Mars Volta on Jools Holland.

  • just looks like a bunch of dudes who might benefit from learning how to create tension & intensity through competent songwriting and musicianship rather than all this mindless, empty posturing. tuneless garbage, badly played. song is barely there underneath the choreography: first-thing-we-think-up-works parts strung together without regard for structure, gratification, hooks. these boys get their sweat on, sure...but less time dancing in front of mirrors & more time songwriting, please.

  • @garcialorca328

Dude you clearly dont get this... Please don't worry about the songwritting skills of these guys, they're way better than yours will ever be. Oh and... it's not a coreography, its called being high, you should try it sometime maybe youll lighten up. Bottom line: less time trying to tell others how to interpret THEIR music and more time being a little open-minded.

  • 0:58 Eh?

  • One of the best performances of all time, no doubt. For anyone not into it, they could easily just stand there quite still, play the instruments perfectly, Cedric could conserve his energy by not moving around so much and sing to the quality of the actual recorded songs, but then, IT WOULD BE SHIT.

The performance and the recorded songs are completely different things. ATDI understood this.

This performance has got so much soul and passion.

  • wtf is this??

  • Isn't that Robbie Williams a nice boy.

  • This is the the best performance ever on Jools Holland.

  • Im not gonna lie, they sound shit.

  • To think I was only five when this was aired.. I wish I watched it.. it would have blew my mind even more than when I heard it ten years later

  • this very performance was what got me into the band. it seems shit now but at the time i thought it was amazing

  • ha ha robbie williams was on after these lot, i bet he was shitting his pants

  • Such a freaking awesome performance, absolutely incredible.

  • Is this really a bad performance? I saw this on TV at the time, and immediately wanted to buy the album - a legendary TV performance.

I remember Pat Cash was in the audience, and he was so excited, he was practically unintelligible.

Jools, obviously, was thoroughly bemused. :)

  • Sorry, how is this in any way a BAD performance?? Anyone who knows anything about the band would know that this performance: a) was intentionally self- sabotaged, and b) is otherwise entirely in-line with their live ethic. I'd much rather watch this than a band that played their songs note-perfect but standing in one spot the whole time.

  • Another reason why bands who can't perform live shouldn't be allowed to record albums. Absolutely ridiculous. High energy means nothing if your music sounds like shit. I saw them live and it was no different and neither is The Mars Volta if you see them live. Just noise and an impatient audience. Really sad because the recorded stuff is absolutely amazing.

  • @iamkilroy

someone needs to go back to his 30 seconds to mars albums quick

  • @faugusto1983 Really? I just said I appreciate their recorded stuff but I'm here to tell you they suck live. I saw them live and they were horrendous. I saw the Mars Volta live and they were horrendous. I've also seen tremendous bands like Refused live who blow At the drive in out of the water.

  • i love this song but wow... terrible performance

  • Unplug Omar's guitar and just let him dance like a madman, then it will look and sound good.

  • awesome awesome awesome

  • the letterman performance was a little better when it comes to staying in tune cause they still went wild, Omar still indeed threw his guitar but they were still more in tune. Either way u cant hate on a Mofo that throws his guitar then picks up a tambourine.

  • I think I read that they played bad on purpose cause they didn't like the way their careers were going.

  • that was awful.

  • Omar fucked totally the music...

  • Comment removed

  • All over the shop but somehow stilll amazing!!!!!!!

  • LOL, I swear to god, these guys were one of the best at going absolutely APE SHIT. I'm sitting typing this thing up and my adrenaline is STILL AMPED! Omar throwing his guitar (LOLS) and picking up the jingles, the Bixler throwing the chair around hahaha.... my god these dudes knew how to hype the crowd! Sure they were out of tune, but on the sheer performance alone, WOW. Anyways, good stuff. (side note: Swear to god, the Bixler is ALWAYS wearing the same "the Bull" t shirt back then. LOL)

  • 3:11 FUCK THIS lmao!

  • @willrayment Thats about the time when they started sounding good.

I love ATDI and I'm a big fan of TMV.. Really big fan of Omar's musical style and his energy but sometimes it can be a wee bit... lol :)

  • This is their best ever performance simply because its their worst.

  • this is missing robbie williams asking for the chair back... shame.

  • 'Bad Performance'????!!!!!!!

  • Should'a also shown the part after it with Robbie Williams standing at a piano saying "Can I have my chair back, please?", hilarity.

  • aye they just kind of look like there tripping balls

  • its weird this is their worst but best performance

  • Amazing performance. On so many levels. The way Robbie handles it is awesome too.

  • The intro is out of tune, theres no problem with the rest!

the out of tune intro and omar throwing his guitar made me laugh though. but this is a good performance. it's so raw and i prefer this over the album version.

  • lol audience look scared

  • So what if their timings off, they miss cues & it's out of tune. It's pure Punk, full-on energy, aggression & a simply brilliant performance. I sure miss these boys.

  • you can really see Omar getting tired with the style of at the drive-in here. he is not holding back any kind of creativity on his part and he doesn't give a fuck either.

  • the camera pans round to robbie williams just after this, his face is priceless

  • @blunderandhaggis then he asks for his chair back

  • What a performance. People who don't appreciate the music or the performance are Philistines. This is art.

  • @AmourSynthetique funny...some people who think this is art might be called deaf mental defectives by others...to each his own, I suppose

  • @AmourSynthetique There is a difference between being an artist and sounding like shit.

  • jasus christ monkey balls amazziiiing..

  • whoever says this is a bad performance should not waste time listening to At The Drive In because you will clearly never get what this band was about. And you know what? thats ok because some of us are just limited and thats fine, but dont come on youtube making stupid coments waiting for people to agree or explain it to you. This is beyhond words...if you dot get it...you dont get it. move on.

  • If only they weren't so out of tune, this would've been a pretty badass performance.

  • they suck as music.... but so fucking energy !!!

but... they dont must go to that show ! XD

  • This is why they broke up.....cause omar and cedric are just too much :D

  • cedric and omar are so fucked up

  • @dpuknowme Yeah, on drugs, one of the main factors they broke up.

  • For people who say it sucks: The song is SUPPOSED to be out of tune, noisy and sloppy. That's the way it was written, that's the way it sounds on the album.

  • @GozerTheGozerian Not really, it sounds good on the album. It just sounds out of tune here. No hate, I'm just sayin it does sound better on the album.

  • @GozerTheGozerian Sloppy maybe. Out of tune? Nah. There is SOME order to the song on the album version.

  • @Guitarfool5931 What I said is that the guitars are INTENTIONALLY out of tune. That's the sound the band is going for. And it works, obviously, because this is an awesome song.

For another good example of how an out-of-tune guitar can sound awesome, listen to the song "Aisle 10" by Scapegoat Wax.

I wasn't dissing AotD, I was saying that some people don't realize the song was written to sound discordant and chaotic. I think that's a credit to these guys as songwriters.

  • @GozerTheGozerian Spt on, well said my man.

  • con esta me vuelo la cabeza

  • the way omar plays the guitar in the first 40 seconds or so makes it sound like an entirely different instrument, absolutely unique :) ...genius

  • Well these guys are crap, but bad-ass

  • @ekmad I'm sure if you asked the general public, 99% of them would agree with the "crap" comment, but then 99% of the general public are blinkered, tasteless morons, that wouldn't notice brilliance if it buggered them with it's 12" cock.

  • @bboma777 U mad?

  • It's almost like they purposely sabotaged this performance.

  • MOTHERFUCKING EPIC MAN yo gigs should be like this more oftern so much damn energy

  • Possibly the greatest live performance I've ever seen.

  • I've found that ATDI tend to perform most songs better than "One Armed Scissor" live. I think they get TOO into it or something; or, well, Cedric and Omar do. Still, it's worth it to watch Omar chuck his guitar and Cedric go apeshit.

  • This is exactly why ATDI are (in my opinion at least) better than Mars Volta and Sparta, who are both in there own way,and seeing the Mars Volta was incredible...but ATDI was just so fucking passionate, the music just seemed an extension of that passion, they had to play like this, its as for real as it gets folks

  • Fucking awesome man thats what i like too see like its not a studio version

  • drugs are bad...

  • Omar's guitar being a major pain in the ass = the shitty sound

he makes it worth it though when he chucks his guitar into the audience and goes nuts with the tambourine

  • sounds horrible..............but if i was there i wouldn't care.cause thanks to this band i discovered alot of music i would have never heard. ATDI the best ever. oh and omar didnt know how to tune his guitar.maybe that's why it's off..........but who cares...music nowadays is sucking alot. :(

  • This is the worst, and at the same time the best, live performance I have ever seen. Out of tune? Yes. But still twice as energetic as a huge amount of bands I've seen.

  • absolute fucking chaos - thats why this is such a brilliant performance!!

  • i remember what happened after this, i watched it on t.v years ago..... Robbie fat cunt Williams walks over to their side of the studio from where he's performing and picks up the chair they were smashing during the song and says 'can my mate have his chair back?' to get a laugh. No one laughs, ATDI just stand there deadpan and look at him like he's an untallented piece of shit, which he is.

  • @MrRaz22

Damn, wished they'd kept that on the DVD this is ripped from...I wud pay good money for that footage = ]

  • i remember what happened after this, i watched it on t.v years ago..... • WTF.

  • id love to see what jools said after this hahaa

  • @shauning7

I know someone who was there and apparently they went down really well =)

  • @shauning7 Jools probably said the same thing he always does after a band has played. Something along the lines of: "At The Drive-In... YES!"

  • Song's been in my head since I was twelve... that's eight years of this kick ass song floating around my grey matter without hearing it on the radio at all, or mtv more than twice...

  • blue turd is a vastness

  • shit performance!

  • Poor Omar's guitars... regularly subjected to rape.

  • @Haemoserous

    Ain't it awesome?

  • Perfect.

  • Absolutely amazing performance

  • @TheDevilWearsPradaa "shitty kids". Oh dear. I think you're in for a slating if anyone reads that.
