Damn it! I can't find that episode where there's a man that keeps stealing firetails from people and giving them to the poor. Anyone knows the name of that man?
@Azner2254 no it's someone else. he's cut out of this clip, but it's the man in the kitchen w/ the Terry Jones female character who pulls the sketch out of the hat.
William Topaz McGonagall (1825 or 1830 29 September 1902) was a Scottish weaver, actor and poet. He is comically renowned as one of the worst poets in the English language.
Because he has terrible metre and rhythm, his poetry is realy just prose chopped up into lines, his images and details etc are banal and like an engineer's reort, and he is melodramatic and sentimental.
Generally in Monty Python, there is very little to "get".
In this case, however, it is implied the the Scotsman on a Horse is riding to stop the wedding. Normally, this would involve the removal of the bride. In this case, it is the removal of the groom.
OK. I wasn't sure if there was some cultural in-joke I wasn't getting. Family Guy has a Scotsman on a bicycle joke, I didn't know if there was a specific cultural context to put it in.
It's not really a gay joke - it's a for everyone joke. All jokes are based on reversal of expectations or the norm. And I think there is usually a lot 'to get' in Monty Python - a great example is the comical but biting satire on religion 'Every Sperm is Sacred'. That's why Python are still relevant. I was lucky enough in the 1980s to interview both Cleese and Palin at length and they each have a strong social conscience.
Interesting. Reversal of expectations...either that or exaggeration.
I have the greatest admiration for MP- although I think it's a shame that *nobody* has balls big enough to do "The Life of Muhammed"- they'd do so at the risk of their lives.
It was,. Cleese was very serious and we talked about psychology and mortality etc.
Palin was very funny even in private and both were modest and not hung up on ego. Very refreshing to meet people who are famous for actually having enormous talent and intelligence - not just for being celebrities.
Sadly, as a Muslim, I have to agree with you, I know how people might react. But then, do remember that the movie was "Life of Jesus" either. MP got a lot of criticism over the movie at the time, and had to explain that they weren't trying to ridicule Jesus (and the movie wasnt even about him), but making fun of illogical religious zealots in general.
MP got a lot of criticism, as did Martin Scorcese after making "The Last Temptation of Christ". However, I do not recall anyone making death threats against them.
You are absolutely right, unijade - Python got enormous criticism, especially from fundamentalist Christians in the US who didn't understand the film nor the message of the gospels to love one's neighbour. Fundamentalism (extremist zeal) in any religion is a potentially dangerous and divisive thing - doesn't matter whether it is Christian, Muslim, Jewish, Hindu etc.
@HorrorFrogPrincess No way. I thought his gonna take the priest. Thanks for making it so crystal clear. We do expect you to explain some other MP sketches.

The man sitting next to Terry Jones' Pepperpot in the kitchen is Ian Davidson, friend of Python and comedy writer.

The Family Guy joke was probably just a reference to this and the other Scotsman on a Horse skit.
And the fact that Cleese was riding a bike in this, since he couldn't ride a horse.

Apparently, at the time, John couldn't ride a horse, so that's not him in the long shots. For the close-ups, John's on a bicycle.
