But I highly dislike the fact that the British have an ukulele orchestra and they can't even pronounce the instrument's name correctly. And there seem to be more guitars than ukuleles so why isn't it called the guitar orchestra of Britain?

Makalas are great starter instruments. They're really cheap, easy to play, tune very well and are very durable/portable.

I picked my first ukulele (a Makala soprano) at a local store for $35 with a soft case. They're perfect to start out.

I've also heard of Mahalos, but these tend to break much sooner and don't tune as well. They also don't sound as good. And, possibly most importantly, they don't come in legit colours like lime green and purple.

I'd go with a soprano makala.

@RageOfTheKage Lanikai all the way. It'll run you about 100 for a concert size. Cheaper if you want a soprano. Personally I suggest the Tenor. If you really get into it, check out Kamaka ukuleles. Although they are expensive, they are beautiful instruments.
