Well well well, I think everybody who would like to learn drawing should first try it with pen and paper. A lot of the skills you virtually obtain by using PS are actually YEARS of work when tried to master manually. Still, what you need for both techniques is the artist's eye. But that is about everything a virtual artist and a traditional painter have in common. A friend of mine said he can create an entire universe in PS - but if handed pen and paper he cannot even get a simple doodle down.

I dont know, i agree you should start traditionally, but when you do using a tablet also trains your hand more steadily, so if you stop using a tablet and pick up a pencil like i do from time to time to fill concept sketch work, your hand gets much finer lines and curves because your body adjusted to the small size movements of a tablet pen. So in a way digital art does have a learning advantage, and its somewhat good for you all the same

the eye lines are very disproportioned and the shawdows and smudges are not blended in correctly, too much effort on details yet some deep outlining and the misuse of light convey an unfinished portrait. Keep working on to achieve better quality.

I dont use a grid, but if you draw digital, you can get very close to the photo while drawing, because you can change things, like the position of the eye.
