735 is one of the best radios I've ever used. Putting it next to an Icom 756 Pro 3, and the only difference is the huge screen on the Pro 3, and filters on the Pro 3 which are useless on sideband. The 735 is VERY easy to work on, very easy to use, and has one of the best receivers to this day. The 735 is an absolute CRUISE MISSLE on HF. There isn't a DX station I haven't been able to work with 100W and a Cushcraft R5 vertical.
The lighting mod is really easy. Change the front bulbs with LED's.

is the amber display light a mod, or did the radio have a green and amber option?

This trx with standard bulbs have green display, but if you change bulbs on reds, blue or yelow LED's the display light changes.
