Very good -- but you forgot to mention Dred Scott decision. LIncoln saw Dred Scott -- rightly -- as making it inevitable that slavery would be North and South, because Dred Scott decision made it impossible for states to decide to stop slavery on their own.
So when Lincoln said we would all be slave or free -- he mean literallly, we would all be slave states, or free states.
It wasn't rhetorical flurish to him.
Why this isnt spoken of much, I don't know, but it was Lincon's reality.
