You can't compare any newer jazz guitar player of the last 25 or 30 years to Wes,django, charlie c.,les paul, jim hall, joe pass, barney, kenny, ellis, raney etc. even the best ones like matheny, scofield, bireli, remler, etc. i hate to say this but there will probably never be anyone better than those people, not say to say there aren't any good jazz musicians now, Skolnick is one of them. But to say that he's not good is an injustice, he's great.
I beg to disagree. Benson, McLaughlin, Bireli, Holdsworth and DiMeola on a good day are right up there with anybody, and even thought he wasn't strictly a jazzer, Shawn Lane's talent was equally prodigious.
Check out my fave vids on my profile. except bireli & co these guys are all teachers at my old music college. They ACTUALLY understand a lot about jazz and improv. So tell me now that skolnick isn't jumping into a genre in which he has no strong foundations and is dwarfed by players who are unquestionably better improvisers and have much more understanding of the music.
Whether you agree with me or not i recommend checking out the vids on my profile if you're genuinely interested in jazz.
Skolnick cant play jazz to save his life, Unless you don't know anything about jazz. I mean look at cats like wes montgomery, george benson, joe pass, Bireli Lagrene. This guy just doesnt have it at all- Ive seen him live. these latin beats and all tunes he has are like not so good versions of tunes al di meola or frank gambale made 10 years ago. Stick to metal man!!
hah, famous? is that what music is all about then? if its originality of style or composition then skolnick gets 0 of 10. Ive seen him live, he cant play jazz full stop. even my teacher agrees and he's the head of one of the most prostigeous guitar colleges in the uk. search him if you like, john wheatcroft on youtube. seriously you cant compare this guy to the likes of wes montgomery, django reinhardt, joe pass, charlie parker, bireli lagrene...
haha only metalheads, my teacher has played with the likes of bireli lagrene at the manouche jazz festival, alan holdsworth, paul gilbert, billy cobham. maybe hes not as famous but he certainly knows alot more about playing jazz or any other kind of music then skolnick who as far as im concerned can only do rock/ metal.saying skolnick can play jazz is like saying steve vai's boston rain melody or satch's 'midnight' is jazz.
anyway im not saying he isnt good at metal/rock, just that there are are whole world of guitarist who have played jazz all there life out there and skolnick doesnt even come close to being in there league in that area of music. He just doesnt know the style enough.
Is Skolnick the best jazz guitarist ever? Ofcourse not. To say that he has no idea at ALL how to play jazz however, is rediculous. You may not like what he brings to the genre, but whether you are willing to admit it or not he is a really talented guitarist and a very solid jazz musician.
Out of the big five of thrash (Slayer, Metallica, Megadeth, Testament, Anthrax), Alex Skolnick is bar none THE most technically skilled guitarist of them all, even more skilled than Marty Friedman and Dave Mustaine. Incredible.
idk man, id say yes, he beats all of them, but not sure about marty
they both are very technically proficient, and have amazing phrasing and style, so id say, up to alex and marty, thats starts to be a battle purely of who's style you like more, but they both murder any of the other thrash guitarists
Alex rules! Very cool version of this song. Anyone who digs his playing should check out his work with Trans-Siberian Orchestra as well...their version of "Layls" last year with Alex on slide was amazing!
Jazz is Metal...

Some parts of this actually remind me of Santana's Toussaint L'Overture.

he's not "technically skilled"...he's TASTE-skilled, something that others metal guitarists totally lacks in
