I had to watch this film because P.Verhoeven was its director. He made brilliant RoboCop, Totall Recall and Basic Instinct. And yes, Starship Troopers was great. Casper Van Dien, Dina Meyer & Jake Busey did a great job. Critics gave many negative reviews to this movie but I think ST is one of the most underrated Sci-Fi films of the 90's (along with Strange Days, Alien 3, Them, Lawnmower Man, Virtuosity, FutureSport, The Time Shifters, The Apocalypse, The Arrival, Mimic, Virus, Space Truckers)

When you're fighting some giant alien bugs (that THEY provoked with human greed and subsequently got owned by) that will kill you as soon as they touch you, the role of a medic is somewhat useless. In this case, whatever it was that was written in the book has been portrayed in a very similar manner to Full Metal Jacket. If this was indeed in the book (got a page number?), then chances are they still could have directed it to appear more original.

And the movie overall is still nothing like the book.

As a former soldier, I can tell you that there isn't a single nice drill instructor on any army in the world.

Being an asshole is part of the job description. Their job is to take an 18 years old teenager and make a real-life professional warrior out of him. This task cannot be done nicely. Nazism has nothing to do with it.
