this model would not work. there has to be a minimum of 45 CM of media to fully filter water. that bucket is 20 tops.

The only thing he is removing is the heavy particles. They now have to pore the water over charcoal or boil it. You can achieve the same clarity with a coffee filter or a sock.

its called a biosand filter...google it. its being used all over the world. albeit this is the smallest one ive ever seen. mine filters 20 liters in 30 minutes.

Slow-sand filters like these have quite a few tricks up their sleeves. Usually, a base layer of gravel is laid out, doesn't do much for filtering, but provides a "trough" at the bottom and gives the sand something to sit on. Fine sand is the key player in the slow-sand filters. They PHYSICALLY filter out particles to a degree by a) Straining the water, and

b) aDsorption. Stuff sticks to the sand.

and BIOLOGICALLY.

Within the first half and inch of sand or so (after a period of about 10-20 days or so) a little layer of biological organisms form and begin to feed off of and chew up natural organic matter as well as other organisms in the water. This layer of "stuff" is called "schmutzdecke"

Slow-sand filters (with a mature schmutzdecke) have even been shown to remove E coli.
