@derekmac61 if you ever say the clash and blondie in the same sentence , say that they are in the same realm, or even think you know any thing about hip hop I will hunt you down and kill you but please save me the prison time KILL YOURSELF!
what do you expect ChaosCat79? Hip Hop/Rap has done nothing but 'steal' samples since it first started out. FFS stealing from good ol' white skinned blue eyed boys was as 'radical' as Rap/Hip Hop gets!!!! Rappers Delight 'stole' from Chic & its always happened (apart from 'white' rap songs by The Clash & Blondie, probably the only original rap songs ever made)
True! But the fact remains that Prince Paul (and to a slightly lesser extent A Tribe Called Quest, The Beastie Boys and a few other rap groups at the time) took too many liberties with the length of samples they used. He had to do was chop the samples down some and it wouldn't have raised nearly the same ruckus. (Even more galling when the re-mixes of this song and Me, Myself and I are such perfect examples of how to sample RESPONSIBLY!)
Of course De La Soul (and Prince Paul in particular) have to share a big portion of the blame for this current situation. The wreckless over-use of long samples from extremely well known artists tracks was just ASKING for trouble, and now 20+ years later we are seeing the after effects.... with the mega-corp music companies now in possession of the licenses to these samples and with the legal twisting of the copyright laws through the years, we're unlikely to see creative hip-hop now.
i like the fact that the comments for a lot of good hip hop videos are turned into discussions. whether the person agrees or disagrees with the argument, they tend to have some substance. educated people like old-school hip hop :)
Where are the intelligent hip hop artist of today? In the 80's and 90's there where lots of them but now a days they only seem to care about pimping and bling bling...
@bloemetjen First of all, the bullshit pervading radio stations and tv music outlets AIN'T Hip Hop. It's the bastard mutated grafted stepchild of Hip Hop, known as rap. Second of all, to answer your question, the intelligent ones are predominantly INDEPENDENT or UNDERGROUND. Why? They're so fucking disgusted with the bullshit passed off as Hip Hop. The real question, as I see it is: why do INTELLIGENT fans of Hip Hop keep expecting mainstream cats to give 'em the real deal??
@FullMoonJacket there's not mosgyny in music TODAY. Hell nowadays they show females in music videos so much like they're fuckin goddesses that should be worshipped, and liked by everyone(including girls) so if anything music today is female worship-they have hoes in every video. this music from the 90's was good in the since where u didn't have 2 see a woman's tits all the damn time to see a story-it was actually political, interesting, educational-in a way-and full of TALENT. not 2day's music
@JayTAkins um...it's difficult to take you seriously when you talk about music not being misogynistic when you call the women in the videos hoes. More to point, they're certainly not making it seem like those women are goddesses, more like sexual objects so...try agin.
@hopeless4polo um...it's difficult to take your original comment seriously because it is actually false, because they actually did use profane vocab in 90's rap, and what they show today in music videos today-a little was shown during the 90's. Also, what I meant society showing them so much like they're fucking goddesses, I meant that they show them so much where as they view them as something to be admired or liked so much. Goddess- woman who is adored or idealized, esp by a man... u try again
@JayTAkins I actually didn't make any original comment about 90's music at all, that was FullMoonJacket, but nice try. My comment was about you saying "music today is female worship- they have HOES in every video..." they aren't "goddesses" in the admirable way you try to put it if you can so easily interchange their classification with the pejorative term "hoe" in the same breath. I invite you once more to try again...
@hopeless4polo it amazes me how an ignorant cretin such as yourself tries to sound so intelligent by broadening your vocabulary in each sentence to appear as though you have profound knowledge on the terms you use in reference to what I was talking about. When I said that "music today is female worhip-they have HOES in every video"-I was telling you how this society glorifies women by having them in almost everything that they show. Look up the definition of worship;MY opinion of them is as hoe
@JayTAkins It's funny how upset you're getting because I'm pointing out flaws in your statements, get a grip. Not sure what big words you feel threatened by in "each sentence" that I used to somehow make me seem smart but if that's really what you think it says a whole lot more about your intelligence than it does mine. Its clear by your third and unnecessary reply that we have differing views on "glorification" as you put it. I find most of it degrading rather than glorifying.
@hopeless4polo Another thing..."they aren't "goddesses" in the admirable way you try to put it if you can so easily interchange their classification with the pejorative term "hoe" in the same breath. I invite you once more to try again..." in response to that, I said that the media has women in every music video so as though they should be worshipped(like goddesses). My advice to you is to actually read a sentence and try to decipher what someone is saying in a more logical manner.
@hopeless4polo Considering that an arrogant cretin such as yourself had the audacity to even reply to me with such stupidity, I am going to reply a third time. I refer to these women as "hoes", because MANY other men call them that as a common name for them. They still have their bodies shown in almost every music video in a glorifying way(sexual or not)The fact is that their bodies being glorified(again look up the word "worship") try again young moron.(: It's hard to take you seriously
@JayTAkins the fact that you call them hoes because other men call them hoes is pathetic, maybe you should be your own person. To your second point (not that you really have points to make) Worship connotes honor, love, respect, and admiration....please forgive me if I'm not convinced that the half naked bodies of women in videos is something that you men are being told to honor, love, and respect while you're calling them "hoes" "bitches" and whatever other" common" terms you use to degrade us
@hopeless4polo For you to assume that I'm upset just because I point out your bias views of what it means to be glorified is itself, pathetic. Like I said, I refer to women as hoes-because that is what they're known as and that is what many of them are. Also, I never said nor implied that I was threatened by your use of vocabulary, I simply pointed out the fact that you seem to put so much into a response in this subject matter. My third reply was not at all unnecessary.
@JayTAkins I find it funny how you considering hoes being shown in music videos as degrading; it is not degrading. Women are not forced to do anything. If they decide to be displayed as a cheap piece of ass(assumably wanted by many men-them admiring their body-glorifying them) then that is their problem. They DECIDE to be presented that way, because MANY women want attention. It is certainly not mysogynistic. Women want attention(worship/glorification), and they get it. Case closed. Try again.(:
@hopeless4polo Also, another thing. I don't come on youtube to argue with people; especially with individuals who have absurd viewpoints- your biased view of mysogyny. Apparantly you have nothing better to do than just that-argue. I'd advise you to get a life and actually focus on other things-maybe other females, since men's views of women are disrespectful(in your eyes). Bye. Seriously. Get a life. If the internet is a place where you vent your worthless reasoning then do it with someone else.
@JayTAkins glad we could have an intelligent discussion without name calling, you're full of class. If you didn't come here to argue, why are you doing it? Anyone reading this series of discussions can clearly understand my thought process. It's not my fault you don't know the difference between glorification and objectification/exploitation. It's very typical of men who think like you to pretend that the women in the video's like it. On this note, I will be done. You, sir, are quite stupid.
@hopeless4polo "glad we could have an intelligent discussion without name calling, you're full of class." then you say "You, sir, are quite stupid"...you are one hypocritical cretin.lmfao ! Be gone, imbecile. (: that is...DON'T try again. Bye, I'm through with trash.
@JayTAkins could you two please shut the hell up? No one cares about your problems. If you two want to argue, go on another video. Otherwise what you are saying is not relevant to this video.
now these are the kind of rap group that I like...not like the ones that are "haha-I'm-better-than-you-look-at-my-blingbling-and-my-hohoes" rappers lol, they annoy the shit out of me.
@lakshmimittal Who are hostile to iTunes? De La Soul? Not at all. They do want to have their early work for digital sale but Warner Bros are too scared to put up this album because there are many uncleared samples that may not make it into digital in case artists that were sampled whine about clearance. With that said, I don't understand why their other albums are not up.
First saw De La in 1989 in Brighton when I was 13 on an all day concert featuring loads of artists including Fab Five Freddy. Probably one of the best ever. Have tried to see them every time in the UK. They are the real deal. Original hip hop and very refreshing.
Love mixin' this back and forth between the original 12" version of the Hall & Oates "I'll Do Anyting (For You)" and this jam - always gets 'em movin' on the floor
AS a shorty in the 3rd grade when this dropped... My older Brother somehow still manage to play tracks from this album in with the Kane and Kool G.Rap album and still be cool as shit. Funny how Diverse you 35-40 year olds where in your teens (Im 29). I Salute your Generation for giving me my abilities and knowledge of Self. Music never determined who you guys were.
Man this whole album was the ish... And they're still coming out with classics. Sorry folks, what you hear nowadays that is called rap or hip hop is an imposter.
first heard this in brixton club back in the day, blagged dj into giving it up, imported it for an arm and a leg, never tired of this album. saw dls in brighton couple of years ago, still rocking, totally brilliant
De la Soul the most creative and innovative of all time, trophy won, only one entrant, what does it lead to dum da dum dum, say no go, its over, does coincide with ryme of insanity, 8 ball for a cool cool player, the answer should of been no, rewind that back, classic rymes, make a soul effort yall 100% NZ Kiwi made supporter of de la soul
Sad to say that I'm white and I still like this type of rap better. Even though the newer rap is aimed at young whites, people like me grew up listening to this music. It was good music no matter the color of the listener.
@Golgotha357 Mate, I hear you re your De La Soul comment... Looks like we grew up around the same time and even though I liked my Police, Scritti Politti, and Metallica, this group were *awesome*. Well done for saying so first :)
This album (3 Feet High and Rising), is my favorite album of all time. And shit, I know alot of good hip-hop artists. Tons of great albums. But this album has a special place in my heart.
i love how certain videos remind you of graff nights.
this just reminds me of wearing big ass coats, fucked up gloves with fingers stuck together with overspray breathin fog tripping over homeless tucked into corners cops who flash their lights but never get out of the car.
Unfortunately this kind of music will never be recreated. I guess certain people sold out and then the suits figured out they could make a million from selling the crap they do today. Its all aimed at a young white market nowadays. How many of us have 6 or 7 year old nephews who have a major identity crisis going on at the moment. They have no clue where the music or fashion came from. Its popular culture now! Those of us lucky enough to have these memories should just enjoy :-)
@Andyontherocks Your 100% right , its all aim at the young white market thats way hip hop aint hip hop any more and its sad , we have water down music these days , with no message but sex, greed and bs , and the killing part is this crap now days sales go figure.
@Andyontherocks totally true mate. heard this in brixton club, went straight over to dj and blagged him, went out paid silly money to import three feet, fucking all time classic, still play it at house partys, i have never tired of this album, even after all the years and probably slightly over doing it....................................
@Andyontherocks totally true mate. heard this in brixton club, went straight over to dj and blagged him, went out paid silly money to import three feet, fucking all time classic, still play it at house partys, i have never tired of this album, even after all the years and probably slightly over doing it...................................
@Andyontherocks hey im 14 but i know what your talking about, this is the kind of stuff i listen to and i ask my parents about the years surrounding this genre of music. i just wish this kind of music plays on the radio...not that lil wayne crap
@Andyontherocks You are absolutely right about popular culture. White kids walking around, talking hood, dressing like they came from the hood. It's all quite funny. Thank Vanilla Ice and Marky Mark. But another interesting twist is that black guys can no longer claim to be the 'black sheep' of society, cause everyone acts and dresses like them. So its no longer originial. In effect, us white boys have actually become the 'black sheep'. Ironic, isn't it.
@Andyontherocks I definitely agree with some of your statements but I think another big problem with the current generation is the lack of teachers or mentors who are willing to share their hip-hop culture/memories. Instead of hoarding the culture, share it with the youth and empower them to think outside of the "popular culture box".
@derekmac61 if you ever say the clash and blondie in the same sentence , say that they are in the same realm, or even think you know any thing about hip hop I will hunt you down and kill you but please save me the prison time KILL YOURSELF!

@chj2, well, maybe you're right but De La Soul where mainstream in the 90's. They where selling lots of cd's.
In the 90's there seemed to be more of a mix of intelligent music and the main stream.
But then again, at that time the sky was the limit in the pre internet age. CD prices where sky high and music labels made easy money.
I think the main problem are those media outlets who still have the same views on music and money making as back in the 90's.

I hate hip hop and rap music, but I love De La Soul, and even though their songs are remixes of old songs they are brilliantly produced.

first heard this in brixton club back in the day, blagged dj into giving it up, imported it for an arm and a leg, never tired of this album. saw dls in brighton couple of years ago, still rocking, totally brilliant

Golgotha357 1 year ago 19
@Golgotha357 Actually this is the whitey rap of it's time.
Ice cube and gangsta rap and stuff was the black rap of that time.
But it doesn't matter

I'm white, I listen to N.W.A. ? Good music doesn't know any race. If you like the music then you like the music, it's as simple as that.

@Golgotha357 Mate, I hear you re your De La Soul comment... Looks like we grew up around the same time and even though I liked my Police, Scritti Politti, and Metallica, this group were *awesome*. Well done for saying so first :)

Those of us lucky enough to have these memories should just enjoy :-)

dlm9293 1 year ago
@Andyontherocks Your 100% right , its all aim at the young white market thats way hip hop aint hip hop any more and its sad , we have water down music these days , with no message but sex, greed and bs , and the killing part is this crap now days sales go figure.

@Andyontherocks: I bet your parents said the same thing. 'This isn't real music. It's just samples. Motown - now that was music'. Right?

Doesn't change the fact that this still sounds better than the stuff they play now.

@Andyontherocks I disagree. There will always be good music. You just need to know where to look ;)
CartoonAccordion 9 months ago 4
@Andyontherocks You are absolutely right about popular culture. White kids walking around, talking hood, dressing like they came from the hood. It's all quite funny. Thank Vanilla Ice and Marky Mark. But another interesting twist is that black guys can no longer claim to be the 'black sheep' of society, cause everyone acts and dresses like them. So its no longer originial. In effect, us white boys have actually become the 'black sheep'. Ironic, isn't it.

@Andyontherocks ikr! i try to show my little cousins about good music and they say it all sounds like garbage, they really dont know music like we do
ilikethisand 6 months ago
@Andyontherocks I definitely agree with some of your statements but I think another big problem with the current generation is the lack of teachers or mentors who are willing to share their hip-hop culture/memories. Instead of hoarding the culture, share it with the youth and empower them to think outside of the "popular culture box".
