@WeLoveEminem1 This only works if it has a headphone jack you have to have some way to listen to the audio if your talking about an audio output in the back you could try to splice an old audio cable but I don't think you would get the volume from it.
I am planing on using the IDE for interfacing it with my Arduino board, so I can skip tracks bacwards, search, randomize and repeat tracks. Might be an interesting hack ;)
I have built a CD-ROM-Drive-based CD-Player too, but I simply used the cirquit board of an old AT-power supply including the switch and the fan. I use it with headphones so I don't care about the noise of the cooling fan.
I made a wooden case for it and used the audio-out too, so I can plug it into an amp, too.
I'm a bit rusty with my electronics, so let me see if I got this straight: 12 you get from PSU, and you need another one, regulated to 5 V for the audio-out? Is that it? Did I miss something?
Also, do you know if you can temper with electronics to "manufacture" a next/ffd key?
No the smaller one holds the regulator not to do with the audio the audio output you could get also from an old pc but if you use it,,,(even though I have one shown in this vid I don't use it)you would need some sort of a volume control or booster, I just use the headphone jack for audio out. as far as the next key I never bothered because I had a few old drives with that option. I hope that helps if you use one with just one button you just have to listen to the Whole cd I guess.
Ok I watched this vid over to make sure I stated everything that was needed to do this project I guess I can't help you as I am not 100% sure what your talking about, Unless you don't have audio on your pc or you don't speak or understand english there is nothing to not understand, Sorry if this sounds harsh.
No, it's just the vid is so darned long. I have no patience, since it could be done in max 3 mins with good premeditation, 1 minute with smart cuts (see /user/kipkay).
So can you please just say what's the regulator for? Please?
some cd rom drives have a next button those are the best to use for this only there is no back button so you have to skip forward to the begining again.
I looked that up and Im not exactly sure why you would need such a device on something like this most cd rom drives come with a headphone jack and volume control and play standard cds without using any resources from your pc that's why you can do this as a stand alone so I guess they have a DAC built in.
keep up the good work man i give 5 stars and subscribe you. let the bastards say whatever they want because i like making things out of crap. thumbs up
Why?? i can understand its fun to make shit out of shit but all you gonna get is shit. Just bought an old NAD 5200 on ebay for pocket money and its sounds incredible for a 24 year old disc player. get my point...
do you have a little point for your little story? you know I realy don't get people like you, "Why make stuff just to make stuff? Thats boring?" You know it's people like me who make stuff out of nothing and make it work better or put ideas into others hands who can come up with something that someday may amaze us all. SO go ahead and be a naysayer I will make the stuff and you will buy it, Thanks for posting,<there is my point
hey no need to be nasty. Im old fashioned thats all. Yes i can understand about recycling and things and being inventive. But look at the competition your up against with stand alone cd players. That was my point. Im not a hypocrite just i have my strange ways with things. hope you do come up with a product with an impact. Take it easy. Ed
hey do you think we could take an IDE cable, and a motherboard from an older cd/boombox and use them together giving you the option to change tracks as well as shuffle and program ??
I had a rig like this but it was just a cd rom drive like this one a computer power supply and a set of computer speakers and it worked pretty good, nice FLY speaker by the way I got mine for my videonow but I use it on all my stuff like my ipod and my radio, sounds pretty good
There is an easier way

Hi! I have an old cdrom and an old power supply. Can i connect the cdrom directly to power supply? Thanks in advance!
renrono 8 months ago
@renrono yes you can
omgitschrislol 4 months ago
@renrono You can connect the green wire on the ATX connector to a ground wire and you can fool the power supply that there is a motherboard.

is the voltage regulator 7805aa?
thanx
rugtagu 3 years ago
Just 7805A,
I am not sure I have ever seen a 7805aa, but I guess it would work as long as the voltage comming out is 12 and 5 volt,

you can hit stop then hit play again to start at the beginning, thats what i did when i had a rig like this

realy cool vid man! but had some questions actually. where does the 12V adaptor go? you dont seem to mention how to attach it in the vid.
crapmonster 3 years ago 2
5:17 wiring from the switch shows positive and negative from the adaptor.
HickfromtheSticks 3 years ago
There must be a DAC included in the CDROM drive as well. I thought you would have to use a seperate outboard one.
caprinecapers 3 years ago
DAC??? I am pretty comfortable around electronics and do not know what your talking about so Please explain....

digital-analaog converter....i dont know anything about electronics but know what a DAC is...
