waves of time punctuated by music in harmony heralding imminent proximity of death. inescapable calm on collision course with peace. an exit riding on a tide. transcendent, earthly and full of hope and assurance
Listening to this and looking at the painting "Isle of the dead" by Bocklin wich inspired Rachmaninov.. I'm getting a calm, cold, heavy and uneasy feeling. Like I want to go on that island and see with my own eyes the dark mistery it hides. Wonderful! Just amazing!
i'm gonna get some dissagreements, but i think this is one of Rakmoninov's most moving pieces. about six mins or so into it....man...powerful stuff. hard to keep the face dry...
In my humble opinion much too slow and languid. No forward momentum. One should be aware of powerful oar strokes right from the word go. The short elergiac passages are very pretty but the corpse's relentless progress to its barren island mausoleum is the main message in the sound picture Rachmaninov so brilliantly interpreted after seeing the original Bocklin painting. Well worth a trip to Leipzig to see it. By far the best of the four existing versions he made of the same subject..
Why is Gergiev conducting using what appears to be a toothpick? Is the baton to 'formal' for him or is this just an idiosyncracy of this man? Good sound from the orchestra, but this seems rather odd.
Agreed! This is my absolute favorite Rachmaninov work and to see it so beautifully realized and with such passion by someone like Gergiev is just awe inspiring. Bravo!

Tra lo migliore di Rach.
Ma, scusate... Gergiev sta dirigendo con un stuzzicadenti?! O_o, haha.

An inspirational piece of art. The outstanding effects of his swift movements really got into my heart, and almost pushed tears out of my eyes..

This comment has received too many negative votes show
Did he loose his usual conductor's baton and stop by the local steak house to get a tooth pick?

Didn´t Sigmund Freud refer to this condition as penis envy?
It is just as stupid.
