Dan... my ex husband worked for an electonics distributor in Mtn View, Ca and sold lots of parts to Sequential Circuits in the early 70's. Their synthesizers ending up belonging to great bands in the Bay Area in the era. Steve Jobs and Wozniak also purchased TI and Motorola parts from him when they were working in the garage. They had no credit, paid cash, wore go-ahead sandals, headbands and beads. Those were the days!
Yeah, I would easily trade my Yamaha YPT-220 for a Prophet-5. That is, if such an opportunity arose, which I know may NEVER happen. Oh well, I guess I'll stay with the Native Instruments Pro-53 demo for awhile...
Does any vendor fully restore Prophets anymore? I noticed the vendors that are still doing this work are concerned with electronics only. The instrument wood is left badly scratched, a complete mess, not to mention the other cosmetics. No wonder the price of used Prophets keeps falling.
If you've never played a Prophet then you'll like the Arturia emulation for sure because it's a very good one. Problem is if you've tryed the real thing. The same aplyes to the ARP2600,JP8,CS80 and so on.
After playing around on the Plugiator Pro12 I wouldn't say they are a million miles away, pretty close to be honest. The hardware owner will say otherwise but I don't hear any difference but would expect to hear some minor subtleties up close but from here its pretty much the sound but a heck of a lot cheaper.
Any thoughts on the difference between rev 2 and 3. I just sold my prophet 08 because it didn't sound warm enough even though it was quite a beast. It was a bit to hash and gritty so I don't know...

Without wishing to be mean, was your intention to show off the worst sounds you can possibly get from the Prophet 5? If so, well done you've certainly succeeded! Btw, Yes, I'm bloody jealous you've got one and I haven't!
@jungleboards All I can say is that you are easily pleased! I know what these synths are capable of and this gives no real indication of that. If you think this is impressive, I hate to think what you'd make of me messing about with a Casio SK1 and a Zoom guitar effects unit! I think you'd be pleasantly surprised! I kid you not.
A rev2 is the real thing. it's never sounds canned like the rev 3. I do love a rev3 but it's just not as organic sounding. A rev 2 is better then anything period. Marantzamp needs to hear in person a fully calibrated rev 2. It will make his rev3 sound like the toy it is.
As great as this is I couldn't justify the price tag for something that could fail at any moment so I'll stick with the software plugin and a few cheaper analogs. I see a lot of people playing with these on youtube but how much music actually gets made with them nowadays?
Thanks for the vid zioguio! Been craving a sound like this for a while. sclogse1 is right, his bass hand is slightly retarded...He should pick up a guitar once in a while and learn some sweeps, that would help solve this left/right brain dilemma he's facing. Practice makes perfect mate, thanks again for posting!
lol well his left hand is doing the work of changing the sounds whilst playing, is like his right hand is the fighter, the left hand is just got his back =p
@offthelinegt...HAHAHA, those keyboards ARE time-machines...for your mind! Probably why you want them soo badly. I'd even settle for a CS60 instead, but they're hard to find in one piece. I just got an analogue beast known as the Akai AX-80 for pretty cheap. Check it out, it's great for real punchy, gritty and ominous tones from the Universe and BEYOND...
$400, which is a little steep, considering the semi-spongy keys, but it's in great mint shape for being as old as I am. I'm 25 and the Akai alone might cause permanent hearing loss cause it's soo damn aggressive sounding!
@JohnTron84 haha thats cool! I just turned 26 and have definately lost some hearing after playing in a band for about 8 years .. yet im still excited to lose more hearing from an Akai! lol
does somebody have the prophet 5 3v.? one question. it has midi in/out, but is it possible to control parameters other than notes via midi, filter, lfo, etc.
I sold my Prophet 5 v3.3 last summer and have missed her ever since. It paid for a really sweet pro trumpet that I now own and love, and I still have a Yamaha Motif ES-6 which is incredible. But, there's nothing like a P-5's fat analog sound, esp. for brass and string patches, and its intuitive programming (after you learn about your filters, gates, etc.). One day I'll buy myself a Prophet-08. Enjoy your vintage candy. Cheers and enjoy yours P-5!
check out the 80's song by YAZOO- DON'T GO.... the opening hook line is from this synth.. can you have a go at recreating it... its one hell of a sound
Is this better than an ARP Oddessey Mk II or The Yamaha CS-80?
It sounds superior!
And HOW IN GODS NAME, may I ask.. Does it manage to make Modulation Sound like that? Never b4 have I herd Modulation Sound that Haunting! Wicked! Can I Borrow it?!!!
I've just bought a a cheapy little Roland SH-201 to start learning the wonderful ways of creating sound like you do..
Do you have any tips to give me? I can't imagine Love without Sound...
I sort of understand! My Synth does have 2 Osc, with Mix, Ring & Sync Cababilities. It has 2 LFO's with Triangle, Sine, Sawtooth, Square, Trapeziodal Sample/Hold & Random Waveforms. The second LFO's destination is also varible (Pitch, Amp, Filter etc).
Honestly, I find it all very confusing! But I guess all I can do is Fiddle. I did hear from Wiki that THIS perticular synth was famous for it's MODULATION Cababilities.
But I still want to learn. Thanks for the Point in the right Direction!
in fact it sounds more edgy, the sound is less fat but far more present and dynamic, the unisson is like nothing else and whith polymod it can knock you socks off....
I like the obx but it does very little in comparison, it's not a puncher,no way,it's a slow machine ...while the prophet is a violent nature
I would choose this over the Oberheim for two reasons-
The Prophet used higher quality components than the OBX. I found out on a repair site Alpha Entek which rates old synths for quality and safety. The Prophet has VERY well written instructions and explains everything clearly. The OBX book just says what each control is for. I look up instructions, I don't own any. I would like to but want to choose wisely.
There is something very special about the P5. In over 30 years of having an interest and using analogue synths this has to be the best poly ever made.
Crrep Show, Halloween, Alien all used it on the film score and so many classic recordings from synthpop artists. It is so dark and has the warmest pads, brass and wierd sounds ever.
One of the best demo's and nicest conditioned P5's I've seen on YouTube.
Also, don't forget that the company Arturia has released a VERY faithful software version of this exact synth for a fraction of the original's price. Its compatible with Windows XP and costs around £110. I bought it myself and the sounds are very phat and unbelievably rich.
@zioguido - I have to say...as good as virtual is becoming, the real thing is STILL easily distinguishable from emulation. Even the best emulation is only about 75-80% there...but that might change in the future. When it's 95% accurate or so is when I'll pay more attention to 'the alternative.'
@whytelynes - OP-X is really good, but I'd still put that at an admittedly arbitrary 80% or so 'closeness' to the real thing...maybe 85%. I still hear discrete digital 'steps' in some sounds from it and side-by-side comparisons still show some slight digital tinniness in the high end or not as fat/wet in the low end.
@xnonsuchx I agree but would go further. I think the OP-X sounds flat and dull. There's a good side by side demo on here actually buy sonicprojects themselves and I think it sucks.
i have a fully serviced and refurbished chroma polaris, for the price they are super worth it! Chroma P is extremely underrated, it's got arp filters and has the midi specs of a europa modded jupiter 6 and has the same osc chips... so considering the price the CP is well worth it, it's frickin velocity sensitive too! PM me if anyone is interested $825 shipped, it's had a ton of work done to get it solid.
Memorymoog is good too....but perhaps not as sharp/punchy as the prophet.
Plus, the MM breaks down more than an old cadillac!
I'd like to own one, but not for the $3,500 they go for---I'd pay up to $1,000 for one, knowing that many repair bills would be in the near future for it.
I have a REV 3 w/ MIDI and I used it onstage for some killer solos. It cut through the rest of the mix like a hot knife through butter ! my 3 favorite solos- Genesis "Firth of Fifth"; Rush "Subdivisions" and ELP 's "Karn Evil 9"
@paterkyrios Is it rev 3 which lets you tune each note to different scales? Perhaps you could re tune it this way. The instruction and service manuals are free on the Prophet 5 tribute site. I read that old synths go off when the capacitors need replacing. If so, you might have to get it serviced.
