Thanks for putting the whole show up...us UK fans sure miss them...The Disillusionist is probably my fave Church track...but then there's so much greatness to choose from.....
When I first heard this, I had a vivid image of what it was like in the form of a short film but I had no idea how to articulate it until seeing the later work lof Tim Burton, Guillermo del Toro, or Voltaire. It's like a steampunk gothic take on "Something Wicked This Way Comes."
I've sometimes described The Church as the evil twin of They Might Be Giants in that they create entertainingly lyrical songs of unparalleled originality but whereas TMBG are witty and zany, Kilbey and Co. are witty and unrelentingly, Xingu beer dark sardonic. They are the gothic/ambient equivalent of Rush: indisputably talents, undeniably influential, and vastly, unjustly underrated.
i believe Craig Wilson, from astreetlightsong is the other musician. Xerius is right about the song origin. Steve is finally letting loose. It's great to see this. Really an epic concept and well executed.

I read someplace that this song was inspired by an incident with a disgruntled fan. Apparently, a guy came up to Kilbey and said something to the extent of "I hear you consider yourself an expert in disillusioning people. Well, you sure disillusioned me!"
I don't know, I have never read. I did read an article some time ago about how Kilbey didn't like explaining his lyrics as it takes away the mystery. So we may never know. I do love this song though.

@Xerius76 Thanks for that. Sounds plausible. He doesn't usually discuss lyrics, but sometimes he lets it slip. See his live solo video of Hotel Womb.

Love this song. Is it about anyone in particular? Who knows what Steve is writing about....does he even know?
