Darby Crash was a bit of a dickhead, really. Searching for meaning through his sad, sordid existence. He may not have found it, but he encapsulated part of the emotion and transferred it to the medium of music. Basic, cut-back, but reeking of emotion. As songs go, this is woefully neglected by music critics.

He was self-destructive to a fault, but he had genuine talent. Darby Crash was 'Richie Dagger.' Read the lyrics to that song and you will better understand his tragic, self-destructive end. He is described well with those 4 words, but when he returned from overseas, he was obviously impressed with the punkness, or the scene enough that he "took on" some punkness. The mohawk is just a little evidence, leather jacket, different stage presence in America post-overseas. He still wasn't really punk, as you say, but it appears he had maybe just a bit of influence in dress, performing & lifestyle.

@crafter99983 I think the difference is between the 7" EP version and the album versions. I could be mistaken, not having owned or heard the EP, and it is quite rare and expensive to get now. I personally the prefer the slower version as a bit more intense and focused.

Alot of the bands that came after and were part of the same scene were not interested in the "faster is better" mentality, rather it was and is what is the song about, not does it fit the specific genre. see ya at Okie Dogs...

I think that Darby was really repressed because of his homosexuality--even though many of the 1st LA Punks were gay or bi, and had come out of the glam scene, although nobody was really "out & Proud;" the gay guys were very discreet at the time.
