3D is shit. It is just another way to show how studios and media groups in the mainstream are completely out of touch with the public and how they are trying to resolve the problem of piracy. 3d also promotes the use of big budget special effects, for bad films such as Clash of the titans, Transformers and avatar, something that good films like the artist, let the right one in and inception really dont need because they have GOOD STORY LINES AND PRODUCTION VALUE, something most 3D movies lack.
3D will probably be on the decline soon. It doesn't bring anything to the table and the glasses get in the way of the experience. It is a gimmick, and when the novelty wears off, so will people's tolerance of it.
Your complaint is about the present state of tech, not about the concept of 3D itself. Everyone confuses these two issues. The art of 3D cinema reproduction has not yet been perfected in my opinion and I think images might need to projected directly to each retina to be absolutely spot on, and perhaps even calibrated for each person from a personal visor. But in the end, we all see in 3D, we have two eyes, we see depth. Why ignore depth?
Here's the poop on 3d. The media and technology industry has been pushing it as the next big things for the past few years.
3d is not an innovation like sound or color, the addition of sound and color gave film-makers new creative tools to communicate with. 3d doesn't bring much to the table, and it's limitations, 30% color/luminosity loss, nausea induced with camera movement, and the stupid glasses, make it impractical.
Filmmakers and audiences would do well not to drink the koolaid.
this guy is what is wrong with the world, just enjoy the privelige of 3D he uses it enough 2 look at his own dick enough so he must like it. M8 STOP PUPPETING YOUR MOTHERS AND GET A GIRLFRIEND
@TheShinytv I think he makes a good point. I personally thought this movie was shite and to make it worse i had to pay an extra £3 for 3D glasses. Kermode's a legend
So now they have contact lenses! Yeah like that’s going to sale tickets buy the boat load! I wouldn’t even stick overpriced contact lenses in my eyes for the sake of few hours rubbish, often now rubbish remakes that are getting turned into 3D in the hope to cash in on bums on seats! How it must be doing for the home cinema market must be also poor because, I wouldn’t steal one to own it!
An Immersive pile of on-screen Smurfs of rubbish! Avatar was lousy on few counts that I missed it at the cinema and I’m glad I did now. I’ve seen Dolby3D Toy Story it doesn’t have the issue like 70mm IMAX has when looking sideways titling your head shoulder to shoulder where the IMAX 3D becomes undone as 3D! With Dolby3D it stayed as 3D even as far as titling my head way upside down and remained 3D as it would in real life!
I was removing the glasses every few minites in frustration at the Empire Leicester Square, thinking why have I paid £13.50 for film I’ve seen already on THX laserdisc??? It was sheer waste of money and even the projectionist played the film below Dolby reference 85db level! I want my money back!
Now the issue with 3D is that it only gives a depth of field to the image projected on the screen and that’s all! 3D in a sense is all around, from side to side, front to back and above and below! That’s 3D and Avatar doesn’t show possibilities it mealy extends on where the red and blue glasses that give, you a splitting headache, makes it look comfortable boring.
One the 3D glasses reduce light level! I don’t want to pay to look at screen that looks like a 3kW xenon lamp is going on the frizz! It looks terrible! Now they have contact lenses, which I noticed a while back that the 3D glasses frame is getting in the way of the action, I mean the 3D action.
@SandBarAndYou That’s right it was made in the 50’s of strange sci-fi films that often did low box-office. Why don’t they remake those films and test it on the emo kiddies of today and see it if out grossesv Avatar, not! I just want will not go to the cinema again to watch Dolby3D the remakes that are coming out, I’ve heard Marks, review that Clash of Tities was faked 3D it was faked at the last minute and looked ghastly in the cinema.
What a load of bull. I bet the same thing was said about colour television - "Yeah, they're in colour, how POINTLESS, it doesn't aid the story telling itself", and sure film will always rely on good story telling, plot, acting etc, there ARE loads black and white classics - but people don't use the black and white medium much anymore, and, overall, I'm pretty happy about that. I would never, EVER, want to meet this guy, he's done my head in in about 2 minutes. What a close-minded douchebag.
My feelings for 3D exactly in a 2.5 min video bite. Hollywood and the manufacturers and distributors of this 3D retribution need to wake up and stop pushing this dumb idea on us, just because they've run out of any other ideas to sell us this modern motion picture nonsense.
Mark Kermode is the man. HOWEVER, his clear dislike for Avatar sits a little uncomfortably with me. His review stated a lot of positives about the film however, as the weeks pass he seems to be more and more on the films case. Avatar was a game changer and it was a brilliant experience in 3d
Mark - you are so right. "you can't polish a turd" as my mum would say! And that's what 3D films seem to be trying to do. Making a film in 3D doesn't change the fact it's crap. I've yet to see a film in 3D that was any good but I live in hope.
3D has only come back in use as a way to stop people videoing the film off the scene for pirate vids thats why the most pirateble, is that even a word? films are now shot in it. If 3D was so good it would have been industry standard since the 50s and 60s. Personal I like to see things in films like character development and plot.
@Ihavealife100 In what way is that offensive? They are FICTIONAL CHARACTERS. Yes, that's right- FICTIONAL CHARACTERS. Sorry to break it to you but Pandora doesn't exist.
@Ihavealife100 You really need to practise writing then dude. To be sarcastic or ironic in literature you have to make use of tone and there was none. By using Caps lock on your comment would denote seriousness without flippancy. A joke/gag has a punchline as well- even if it's just one word. Basically it didn't work and I'd suggest deleting the comment and trying something else. Suicide perhaps (now that was sarcastic).
@yodabejedi It was pretty obvious that was not meant to be seriouis because as you pointed out the fictional characters so they wouldn't be offended. Looking back it wasn't that funny but it was still obvious it wasn't meant to be taken seriously.
I appreciate the point Mr. Kermode is making, and I concur.
But, truthfully, the 3d combined with the extreme detail brought to the design of the film, does seem to have created an emersive experience for many people.
I guess I'm just waiting for someone with more talent, aesthetic, and philosophical depth to make one of these new emersive epics.
Avatar was still a spectacle to behold, 3D or no. And I think that's the point. If anything, 3D ruined that film for me. Sorry James, nice try though.
i dont get why mark is so anty 3d just like some like old school animation(anime like stuff) over cgi some might like 3d movies over 2d movies cant see the point in making fun of the technology. if you are saying that avatar is not such a great movie how 2d makes it a better movie than 3d...its just a matter of taste i met ppl that were saying they had headaches or got dizzy from the 3d and some enjoyed and said it was really cool experience, that it added up to the movie.

I personally cannot believe that even sky news is going 3d. The most inaccurate news service on the face of the earth (well second to fox).
