Every time I watch this scene, it never fails to give me the goosebumps. What an incredible, unforgettable and timeless character-villain introduction! I even adopted this as a gamemaster in one of our roleplaying games. Players found it really suspensefully cool!
@CreativeCritisizm sorry to correct you but most of this spaguetti western movies were made in spain even this one or the good the bad and the ugly even most of the extras were from spain, you can still go there and have a turist tour to all those places and see the old movie settings
Very sad scene but, overall an incredible movie! The evil smile on Frank's face when he shoots this innocent boy! Wow! I so love the music in this movie plus, a great cast such as Jason Robards and Charles Bronson! One of my own favorite spaghetti westerns along with The Good, The Bad, And The Ugly!
These Italian actors were kinda funny, notice how they used mostly northern Italians with red hair to fit the Irish profile, but the father is noticeably Italian.
What a great but, sad scene this is. I just love good spaghetti westerns such as this movie. Could somebody give me the scene where Cheyenne dies from his gun shot wound? Thanks again. :)
@fitless: I think because the girl stands for virginity and the "good" in the world, and with these shots its over. I also think its no chance that she wears white clothes, stands for peace. im not native english speaking, i hope you can understand it anyway.
this truly stands the testament of time!!to take good old good guy blue eyes and make him a bad guy at his peak at being the american good guy!!now with this here leone has created his loveing and never abandoning audience((rest his soul my insperation as a game desighner))
actually, Sergio Leone wanted Clint Eastwood, Eli Wallicah, and Lee Van Cleef, to be the three gunman who met Charles Bronsan at the train station, He wanted it to complete his western trilogy. But Clint Eastwood was already under contract for Dirty Harry.
That would of been awesome if the three were put in to the film, It would of then gone from being the greatest western to one of the greatest films as the three mentioned are legendary actors
One of the most telling character-introducing scenes ever, this is an excellent way to show the audience a merciless blue-eyed killer like Frank. Does anybody know why it is the girl to be first shot?
When the band of assassins is moving towards the little boy, in the company of the song, its a breathtaking moment. Maybe the best part of the movie, thanks for posting!
This was such a great movie. I didn't first see it until around 2003 and felt like someone from the 68 audience when I saw Fonda! He played the best bad guy I had ever seen (#2 is Mitchum in Cape Fear). This movie made me a big time Fonda fan.
This is a Western Opera: each character has his musical theme, and a great opera and great western. Morricone the composer is just as fantastic as Leone the director.
Wow! Can you imagine what the audience reaction in '68 must have been like when they saw wholesome Henry Fonda shooting a kid? This really is a great movie.
Those dusters were very authentic. Cowboys wore them all the time back in the days of the West. Most people thought Leone made it up because it looked cool. Leone knew a hell of a lot about the West, more than most American directors did.
Sergio Leone was so good at introducing characters into his films. This movie's a perfect example: Bronsan at the train station, Robards at the saloon, Cardinale getting off the train, and Fonda here. Fantastic film.
This is the second best scene of all time IMO. The best scene is the last showdown, but this scene is truly amazing. McBain looks up at the sky when he hears a gunshot, but the birds weren't shot - he thinks. He turn arounf and she goes down. And this amzing music starts to play the second Timmy walks out. And how Frank and his gang walkt out from the bushes.. wow..
Yes, I was really pinned to my seat by the music the first time I saw this scene, because all the footage preceding it flowed so leisurely and didn't have that kind of force or immediacy to it. I too was moved by the way Frank and his men walk out... looks like a painting in motion especially with that beautiful shot from the back with their dusters blowing. Awesome scene!
They should have used Dean Jones in place for Frank,,,lol

They're shooting at his family.
