  • SHIT RICK IS IN A CLASS OF HIS OWN R.I.P. RICK

  • his voice is soooo soulful i love this!!!!!!!

  • Does anybody know when Rick covered this? Was it in the 70's/80's or in the 90's when the greatest hits album that this originally appeared on was released?

  • DOES NOT COMPARE TO MICHAEL HENDERSON'S VERSION AT ALL, AND I LOVE RICK. HE SHOULD HAVE LEFT THIS ONE ALONE!!!!! SORRY, MICHAEL SMOKED THIS!!!

  • @SAXYRIC359 I don't think Rick was trying to beat MH at his 'excellent creation', I think Rick was doing what Rick does best...be Rick!

  • I never thought about rubbing toes to this song, humm. Ladies if i start rubbing your feet ,don't be afraid of me, it is what i like to do. Be glad that i'm willing to go from head to toe, toys can't do that.

  • A song I and my wife loved and still love!!!! Best version of the song by a mile!!!

  • A song I and my wife loved and still love!!!!

  • i was one when this song came out

  • Micheal Henderson's version was also nice. Rick's is my favorite.

  • The Rick James' rendition of original MICHAEL HENDERSON SONG, "YOU ARE MY STARSHIP"! The ONLY remake in the Rick James catalogue! On the original version, M. H. Wrote it, Sang it, Played Bass on it, & Produced it!! Norman Connors plays drums! Visit MICHAEL HENDERSON ON FACEBOOK, MYSPACE & LEARN about a LEGEND! This song has been re-recorded or Sampled by the likes of Rick James, The Dazz Band, Maysa Leak, Mobb Deep, LL Cool J/TAMIA, Jagged Edge and many more!

    Tribute to a great song!

  • Rick James is so awesome he has two first names

  • I love Rick's version of this song

  • OMG!!! NORMAN CONNORS/MICHAEL HENDERSON

    SING RICKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKK

  • who sang this first norman connors or slick rick???????????

  • what album was this song and" down by law" from?

  • I've always got more a funk vibe from rick's stuff, especially the older stuff. not the same funk like james brown kind of funk, a little bit of slighlty rock/guitar sound thrown in more.

  • @anUHkins Yes, it was a hybrid type of funk...Punk Funk! A Punk Rock+ psychadelic fuk+Soul=Punk Funk In musical terms: Jimmy Hendrix+Parliment/ohio players+Temptations=Punk funk! This particular song though is a straight up RnB soul ballad.

  • best tune

  • good old songs, i like to come back to theses vibrations....

  • thanks for posting this- luv it!!!! R.I.P Rick- your music lives!

  • Rick James was the king of punk funk. this song is a remake of Michael Henderson's starship

  • Rick James was the king of punk funk.

  • Brilliant remake by the man!!!

  • Note to self: Wake up wifey and get laid to this song.

  • @darryldelgado lmao!

  • Yes Kickin was one of the cuts of this album also a track called Get wit it and Runaway love

  • Love that bass line

  • Thanks Fireitupbedford .

  • Does anybody know how to get a copy of the Rick James album that was recorded in the early 90's but was never released my Motown???

  • You talking about Kickin' ?

  • I love Rick James he is the reason I learn to play guitar and write songs!!!

  • Same

  • This song is reason enough to track down a copy of Bustin out.

    Thanks again Bedford.

  • Rick James will forever be in my heart as one of the Greast Musicians & song writers! Regardless of the mistakes he's made. Most of us have nothing but Great & Good things to say about him!

  • I agree. I will forever miss the King of Funk.

  • I'll tell you what since you think I don't know the difference between Funk and Disco not that I really have to prove anything to you I will turn this one over to someone who can tell you alot better than I can. And since Rick is no longer with us I'll hand this one over to someone who was there and who played the music. Soon as he has time I will let Levi Ruffin tell you himself weather it was Funk or Disco.

  • @FireitupBedford Well it is categorically NOT disco because it doesn't have a disco beat (4/4 with 16th note high hats) and stylistically isn't funk either. This is just a beautiful R&B ballad. Like all good musical artists, Rick moved in & out of genres and sometimes straddled more than one in a single song.

  • man you obviously dont know your funk history pull up rick james crediblilty he worked with james brown full force a whole list of other funk superstars rick james is funk.

  • @tonyskins19 neeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeck rick is a king of FUNK! that is blasphemy to say he did disco

  • @itsturbotimeyall rick only had two song that were funky its was bustin out and sucker for love, the rest of his music was 98 percent disco and 2 percent funk,i like rick but rick is not a funkateer, larry graham has a video on youtube slapping and plucking a bass thats funk, graham is the the originator of bass guitar funk, its another video on here by a group called bhy who did a song thats called we funk the best, its funkier than a dead decaying pus running bedsore, tell me if it aint funky

  • @tonyskins19 sometimes he did more r&b, but the majority of it is funk. superfreak, mary jane, give it to me baby, ghetto life, all of his most famous stuff is funk. larry graham is way more disco than rick james was. i'd rather be with you by bootsy is way more funky. or anything by parliament-funkadelic is real funk. and no disco artist has that deep soul sound, which rick had to spare

  • absolute legend i wouldve loved to have met the man nobodys perfect and his faults and problems only make him even more intereting and more of a character and his music shits all over anything out today fucking awesome what a man

  • @rickames I didnt grow up with his music but as I go through all his music I have to agree it makes you really appreciate his talent. He made alot of music that the majority of people do not know about and he doesnt get enough credit for. But I know about it and I like his music. For instance I personally dedicated the song I believe in you to my wife Lisa aka BooBoo last night just layin down in bed together cruisin the youtube and shed never heard but she really liked it.

  • @R9G5V6 Ahhh, I'm glad BooBoo liked it, lol.... try a little Teddy Pendergrass, Gerald Levert, & some Howard Hewitt. If you want a few extra points give her a back-rub after a shower, & tell her how important she is too you. Not trying to offend you about 'Lisa' & to handle her, but thanks for your post, & since women are a gift from 'God' perhaps giving her the gift of words & speaking to her about her value, maybe you would pass this on to other men that have a good woman. I'm Rickames.

  • @rickames already

  • I never knew Rick recorded a version of this song. I still love the original by Norman Connors with Michael Henderson

  • me either , i did not know till right now he sung this song. but yeah i love norman's version better.

  • michael henderson wrote this song and sang it on the norman connors album and he also did the bassline

  • Don't forget Freddie Mgreggor's version

    "Natural Collie."

  • Did Norman Connors do this first??? I love Rick's version also...very soulful voice. Go Rick!!!

  • Yes Norman's was first...

  • did he write this song as this is the fifth version i have heard???

  • man great music!

  • Interesting that ASCAP doesn't show Rick as performing this tune which is AMAZING. But, it does show the Dazz Band who did it in 2001. That's a decent version too. --drfunk

  • What's up drfunk. Long time my man. Haven't heard anything about the site yet but when I do I'll pass it on as soon as I get some info. You mean to tell me you never heard this before? If you want it let me know I'll send it to ya....B

  • why wasn't this released before on one of his albums? great song!

  • Good question. But I don't have an answer for it. I'm not even sure when he even recorded it. If they would have put some kind of date on it then I would have know what album it should have been on.
