The Romulans and their ships were just like a German U-boat, and the USS Enterprise was just like a WW II flat-top aircraft carrier. Today everything is nuclear powered and only needs reactor rods rearranged evry 6-years or so.

@Beamshipcaptain actually the episode was based on the WW2 film Enemy Below - which is about a German U-boat and a US Destroyer playing cat and mouse.
