might i point out that i live right near that winn dixie in a subdivison called pebble creak i just today walked in to that winn dixie i just today found out about those tornadoes i walked in those exact places i right now am just startled lol but jesus thats so close to my house i was born in 90
I live right behind the Winn-Dixie. (Now called Bravo). It ripped off half my roof and we didn't have power or water for 12 days. I will NEVER FORGET THE THING THAT I SAW AND HAPPENED THAT FATEFUL NIGHT! RIP ALL THE PEOPLE THAT LOST THEIR LIVES.
I was very little, bout 8, at the time but my family and I had just arrived in Florida for our 1st vacation in the US the night of these terrible tornado's. We stayed in Kissimmee in a villa I think it was near Boggy Creek Road, can't remember. All i remember is conking out due to jet lag waking up in the morning and the place being in what I can only discribe as shambles. But my dad never let that deter him of his adoration of that southern state. I've had a fear of storms ever since
I lived off of Boggy Creek Road when this happened. This was the new (at the time Winn Dixie, with the old one completely leveled across the street. There was also a Farm Stores, and Little Champ at that corner (both leveled), and La Placita Latina #3 never opened as a result. This was soo frightening, but the worst had to be the driver of that car outside with its headlights on when the tornado hit.
I remember Donna from Lil' Champ that lost Her Life that Night. I will never forget the feeling I had during the entire ordeal. I packed up and moved back to NJ. I would not ever want to be trapped like that again
@codypet I lived directly behind that old win dixie at the time. It just missed our house but it did do alot of damage. I live right in shelby place at the corner where everyone used to cut through to get to the old winn dixie. Had the tornardo been to the right a couple of feet I would probably not be here today.
This is great stuff - I've been trying to find this footage for years since I saw it on TV. Thanks for posting. Just like the Iowa bank footage in 2008.
That tornado broke the glass in my apartment in BBL. Made my sister bleed and torchured our cars . i have the video of the after math. But were all fine.
This is the Winn Dixie that is still there today. The old location was totally leveled. This store was built & opened not more than 5 months before the tornadoes hit.
The hubby & I were supposed to go up to Rosie's that night for karaoke. I had a really bad toothache so we stayed home. Good thing we did. Seeing the aftermath with former President Clinton back then was heartbreaking. Goes to show you never know when a tragedy will strike.
I drove past that Winn-Dixie the next morning and a handicap sign was imbedded about 3 feet into the concrete wall about 20' up near the entrance, crazy stuff.
I was there when that tornado hit. I'm so glad me and my family didn't get killed, I was only five years old at that time, and I slept right threw it! My dad was driving home that night when the tornado hit, and i'm glad he didn't die!
I think the car is being pushed by the tornado. Either that or one of the people darting in the store was in such a panic to get inside that they forgot to put the car in park. I'd hate to think that's somebody just pulling up.
Yeah I was going to say it looks like a WinnDixie.. I remember this.. and it ended up being a total of 13 tornadoes in one night last count I heard on it. Saw half if not all form near my house in Southern Lake County
i remember when we lived in orlando. there was a tornado in kissimee. we had to sleep in the closet because it was so windy in orlando. and the tornado was in kissimee.
This Winn-Dixie replaced an older one that used to be on the west side of Boggy Creek Road in another shopping center. The old Winn-Dixie building was leveled (along with most of the shopping center) and is now an empty field. I have a video of it somewhere.
Hey tht reminds me when me and my friend ran into publix in oviedo wow tht was freaky the stop sign was spiing around the pole ligths went off the tornado was only 3 miles from us..
i remember that night i will never forget it i lived behind that wd that was a shame that it happnd i used to ride down the hill behind it with my bike when i was i little kid and the lady in the bakery gave me free cookies lol i remember that they told me i couldnt get any more cookies cuz i took a whole box for me and my friends one time lol i miss that wd good ol times huhhh
Yea, It's the old Winn-Dixie on Boggy Creek Rd. before they built the new one across the street that is now shut down. I was at home in Lakeside when the tornado came through. I had to replace my roof from debris that came through. About $5,000 worth of damage. It was pretty scary! The tornado leveled 2 houses 200 yards away from me. We were told to take shelter at the elementary school up the road because they were expecting more tornadoes. Scary stuff!
I lived at the Simpson Ridge Apartments at that time. I was all alone when it happened, and very afraid. When all said and done, 14 of our Neighbors in the Area Died. I will never forget that Night.
I'm thinking the Winn Dixie was off of Boggy Creek Rd.. pretty sure there was one there before the tornados? Or somewhere near there? but if I remember correctly they got hit kinda bad so maybe it's not?
Either way that was a terryfing set of hours for me trying to make sure my friends were ok, thankfully they were and my own house was 30 miles from there. The destruction weather can cause is quite scary 'n amazing sometimes!
This is the one on Boggy Creek Rd. I was there after it was re-built. You would never know it either. They have since closed down due to WD's bankruptcy and the stuff inside was sold in an auction last year.
I got hit by that same system about 25 miles east that night in my truck! Just got onto 520 off the beeline heading back to orlando when it picked up my truck and threw it 630 feet into the swamps. I'll never forget that night!
I was living at Simpson Ridge Apartments when all Hell broke loose. I was never so scared in My life
BTW Back living in New Jersey, I would rather shovel Snow that go thru that again!

I had just moved to florida, and was trapped in my house during this ordeal. I will never forget my neighbor's lives that were lost that night.

And I forgot to say that I would rather Shovel Snow back up North, then to risk My Life just to be in Florida. Florida's just not worth it.

Actually this place is now called something else but at the time it was a Winn Dixie. Now called Freshco or something like that?

Why was there two Winn-Dixies built so close to each other?
Montoya42Fan 2 years ago
They put the newer one in the new complex because the other had some major issues. No issues after the tornado leveled the empty building though :)

Yeah i remember this, it was in fact a Winn Dixie. All that is left there now is a parking lot behind a Bank of America in BVL.

It's amazing that the tornado was able to force the
drawer open in the second angle. Anybody standing there
would've been shredded by the glass and debris

Very wild stuff. People were rushing in because it would've been certain death to be right outside.
