It's kind of elaborated on in the comic "Witches' Tea Party," which was written (but not illustrated) by ZUN himself. It depends on how you take it. Anyways, I've been thinking about it a bit.. and the conclusion I've come to is that alice is not a youkai, but a Magician. Ontop of that, her powers are that of a youkai, meaning that she's closer to being a youkai than human, which is why people consider her one. I think that it's pretty possible that under all the glitter that alice is still a human, which is why she constantly fights her emotions for marisa.
There's still a war being waged over whether or not Marisa will really die? Remember the song/video's context: All of the Gensokyo facts (time stands still, Marisa won't really die, etc.) don't matter here. It just focuses on Marisa's humanity and how she WOULD naturally die sooner than Alice because of that. That's the power of this video.
Also, Shanghai is different from Hourai in that Shanghai's clothing colors are more similar to Alice's, whereas Hourai is usually depicted in red clothing.
Very cute remix love it. It's light and happy, but it keeps very nicely with the actual song, a lot of remixes get too "technovised" and stray from the original song. I know Alice Margatroid only because I went as her for a holloween costume which turned into a cosplay.

The characters have stories and personalities because thats how they are made. It's one of the aspects of the series that seperate it from other game series. The other defining aspects are soundtrack and difficulty. The few multiplayer games in the series get especially epic between high level players.
Little question: The pairing MarissaXAlice or MarissaXpatchouli, Are they fanbased or canon? If they are fanbased, were are they based on? I myself pair them in a threesome but I dont know if its not crack what I do. xD
Adding to what Schpwuette said, just to answer the "where are they based on?" question. The MarisaXAlice pairing came from the vid "Marisa stole a precious thing". As said, MarisaXPatchouli came from the fact that Marisa borrows Patchouli's books.

it is a game, but it's got good background and fanbase, so it's got a lot of stuff made by players, such as this, which was made by the tribute band IOSYS

The characters have stories and personalities because thats how they are made. It's one of the aspects of the series that seperate it from other game series. The other defining aspects are soundtrack and difficulty. The few multiplayer games in the series get especially epic between high level players.
