Backyard Breeding of Mastiffs in Vancouver, BC

Instead of implementing BSL (which can destroy responsible, respectable, and ethical breeding programs), why isn't the government shutting these BYB operations down? Let's make it impossible to license puppies from breeders who aren't registered with and inspected by the SPCA. Only breeders who show their dogs in conformation OR are involved in herding/hunting/field trials get licensed. Vets are required to report all unlicensed pups/dogs that come in. Shelter and existing dogs obviously exempt.

Why are there laws that can take my dog away from me & kill it, just because of it's breed( not because it did anything wrong), but we can't have Laws that Stops BYBs ?

We have to stop the dogs before they are being Born, not after they are born , then spend millions to kill them.

I hate backyard breeding but if you take the time and get help and guidance from professional breeders i believe you can make a valuable contribution to the breed. if you just wwant a bit buy from a breeder or go to a shelter where there will be lots of gorgeous dogs waiting for a home. xx

I dont follow your logic about back yard breeding. Most people who breed dogs do it for the love of it and many of those people breed in a home environment. What causes problems is poor socialization at the imprinting stage between 2 to 16 weeks. This combines with the effects of breeding unsuitable temperaments. You will be much more likely as a child or nervous adult to be bitten by a nervous dog or weak nerved dog than a dominant dog because the dominant dog wont see you as a threat.

@Lawrance12 The problem is genetics and deleterious mutations that may be beneficial to the humans sense of aesthetics but are causing debilitating illness in many of these breeds. They are basically degenerate mutants who are suffering from the results of artificial selective breeding, and the profiteers are being enabled by consumer demand. Its gotten to the point of breeding grotesque and unfit creatures doomed to a poor quality of health and life. Most breeder do it for money not love.

If a dog is either over stimulated or under stimulated at this time problems can occur in later life with regard to nerves. Breeding in a home environment with people and other dogs and children should actually help produce a social dog. By the way English Mastiffs would not have much prey drive or defensive drive making them really bad protection dogs that is why the cops dont use them!

The most ruthless dog breeders are show dog breeders, who ruin entire breeds by line breeding grand daughter with grandfather for type. Sometimes they breed unhealthy traits for looks. The German Shepherd sloping back, the Bulldog squat nose, the King Charles with the brain too large for the skull and my personal favourite the ridge on Ridge Backs which is actually a mutation that has been encouraged and leads to a higher likelihood of developing the skin condition Dermoid Sinus.

If you knew anything, you would know that these dogs are not bred properly and are not healthy. Mastiffs should be MUCH taller and heavier than the dogs featured in this video. They also don't have the right characteristics. Also, the Presa Canario is not the proper color for the breed. Either way, the dogs are unhealthy and "Back-Yard" breeders need to be stopped.

I dont know much about English Mastiffs or Presa's I breed Cane Corso. But if they have good hip scores and vet certifacations you cant complain. I just dont see someone going through the trouble of building kennels and raising pups for them to be junk.

Bandogges/Bandogs are not purebred dogs and you should know this. You don't seem like a respected, educated, responsible, reputable breeder. No offense. No breeder, or anyone for that matter, should ever be fine with puppy mills or "Back-Yard" breeders.

I just maybe got the wrong ideal but these dogs look healthy. WTF I never said Bandogs are full blooded. I made bandogs one time I had my corso's hips tested and I have a breeder license. I pay taxes on my dogs. But I dont care if someone who has healthy dogs full blooded or not without a breeder license breed. As long as there dogs are healthy. Where are these dogs being mistreated?

If you knew about Molossers you would realize that these dogs are in poor condition, they have been hit/spanked, poor health and condition, they do not show the temperament that an English Mastiff should show. Poor Representatives of the breed in every possible way!!

Professional, reputable, educated, responsible breeders don't let just anyone get the dogs. They ask you many questions and expect you to ask more. They can tell and decide when they don't want to sell a puppy to a specific person, and they have the right to tell you "No." They don't have to sell to anyone/everyone and they don't.

But, this woman on this video needs to be beaten with that stick the guy is carrying. She is promoting breed legislation. I hate to tell her but there are documented cases of small dogs killing children as well as big dogs. Not everyone who owns a large dog has that dog to be a "man killer", those people are the minority. So why hurt the rest of us? Drunk drivers kill more people in the US than dogs ever will, so why not ban cars? It is the same logic.

Great post!! She wasn't very educated either. She mentioned "Pit Bull" which isn't a breed. Its a breed group like Molosser. The breed she was thinking of was American Pit Bull Terrier. Calling them Pit Bulls is like someone calling their Doberman just a Pinscher. There are several other Pinschers than just the Dobermann. You seem educated, great post! ( Mastiffs rule! )

I am a fancier of English mastiffs and the treatment in this video makes me want to cry. This is discusting and inhumane. English Mastiffs are wonderful dogs who wouldn't hurt a fly if raised properly and if they come from a reputable breeder with pedigree background. How sad. :(

I rescued a brindle English mastiff a few years ago and I have also become very attached to the breed. She is an awesome girl and the one thing I can say is the conditions the above dogs are kept in are disgusting. They are absolutely family dogs that require tons of attention and affection. All of the mastiffs I've met to date don't have a mean bone in their body.
