@HaasEric i heard that'vitula' gave its name to the "vihuela" which then gave its name to the viola family as they have a similar curved body, also the vihuela predates the viola as it was a substitute for the lute and is strung the same ( the lute looked to arabic/moorish for the spanish/portuguese)
Wery cool to see a instrument like that in this. A wey colorful man and wery Baroque in his outloock. I also play theese pieces and six of them is in my account, play them after worc on a violin i got at the age of 12. cool pieces
Well, thanks to this video, I now know what a viola da spalla (newbie to baroque and stuff) is and sounds like. Lovely sound... Hope he didn't hurt his back/neck though. Looks like a tough instrument to master.
I have the recording of him playing this instrument and its says that this is a Cello di spalla, not a viola di spalla. Anyway, how the instrument is called is not big deal, what matters is how Mr. Kuijken play it with such musicallity, as it has accostumed us with his violin playing.

i have a question...is it a 1/8 cello playing like violin or is it different instrument?

Viola - from Latin 'vitula', originally a generic term for any stringed instrument (both violin and viol families): the rest is all a matter of SIZE
Violino - small viola (later specifically with 4 strings in 5ths)
Violone - large viola
Violoncello - small large viola
Viola da braccia - viola 'of the arm' (as opposed to 'da gamba', of the leg)
Viola da spalla - viola 'of the shoulder'
Jambe de Fer mentions a 'violoncello piccolo da spalla' = a 'very small large viola for the shoulder'

is he playing a cello on his neck??? I heard somewhere that it was called a violoncello, but I thought that was just a term in pieces of music.
kay2010979 9 months ago
@kay2010979
Violoncello is just another name for a cello. What Sigiswald Kuijken is playing in this music is a viola da spalla.
AnitaLive1 8 months ago
@AnitaLive1 Is a "violoncello da spalla". Not a "viola da spalla". Just hear the sound of the instrument. Like a violoncello, not a viola.

@HerrBeckett you being serious? I was referring to the size of this instrument and the position in which it's held. Sorry that was so obscure to you.
