@StealY0urFace It's interesting how when people say they hate a team, they usually talk about how they hate the players and the coaches. But when someone talks about hating the Steelers, they talk about the Terrible Towel, the fans, and Troy Polamalu's hair, because they have no justifiable reason to hate the players or the franchise.
I think it's obvious that most of the "hate" for the Steelers is actually jealousy.
"The greatest miracle play in sport's history had taken place.." Howard Cossell. (A TRUE legend) If u were a kid during the 70s and into the 80s (like me) who replayed this moment with your friends afterschool and on the weekends and watched the GREATEST and CLASSIEST football players in all time ever in the glorious game..then thumbs UP UP UP!! :-)
@cdlcrusader1 It wasn't the catch itself that was amazing. You have to understand the context. The Steelers and Raiders were arch enemies at that time. The Steelers hadn't won their division or played in a playoff game in decades. The Raiders were almost certain to win with seconds on the clock. It was the very unusual nature of the catch and its consequences, not the skill that is so celebrated. That catch catapulted the Steelers to their 70's glory.
Now as far as whether or not the ball hit the ground first is enclosed in the eyes of those who were that close to see and the man that "caught" the ball, Franco Harris.
In case you all didn't know, the play was 100% legal in the terms of who the ball hit first. See en(DOT)wikipedia(DOT)org/wiki/The_Immaculate_Reception#Controversy That, and that rule was repealed later so today that reception would have been legal. Not to mention, some say the ball hit the ground as Harris picked it up, you can pretty much tell from the frontal view that this video shows that it was quite a ways up from the ground.
@C0revette789 ...Yeah I read that article. They even brought in a physics major or somebody and determined that it would've been IMPOSSIBLE for the ball to hit Fuqua first as the ball would've traveled the other way. You just saw how hard Tatum hit Fuqua, so that right there would tell you how and why a ball would travel backwards and as far as it did. Now, I am Raiders fan for life, born and raised in Los Angeles, but the laws of physics don't lie, unless you're Michael Jordan, of course.
@sgumpert0 I was able to stop this video at the exact frame where it hit Tatum first. In full speed, I thought it hit Fuqua first, but slowed down, it hit Tatum first.
@elemix27 Oh, it's a National Public Radio show exploring science etc; they had an episode where this The Immaculate Reception was featured. You can prob. find it at radiolab.org/
@GJAY420 The Steelers didn't sue the Raiders. Al Davis, owner of the Raiders, sued Steelers coach, Chuck Noll for calling the action of Raider George Atkinson criminal. This was the second time that Atkinson hit Lynn Swann in the back of the head. Swann was no where near the ball and spent 2 weeks in the hospital. That's not playing rough. Atkinson was trying to take Lynn Swann out...for good. Try doing your research before making a fool of yourself.
Ok even if u can't see the catch on video I'm sure with 22 players and the refs watching the play everyone (who's not a raider) know it was a catch. Steelers rule
It was illegal for two offensive players to touch and receive a forward pass, unless a defender touched the ball at any point. No question raiders free safety Jack Tatum batted the ball, so Harris's reception was good and Steelers won fair and square.
Agent k you are incorrect. I was watching the game live when it happened and remember is clearly. What the stories and clips today leave out is that the play was not immediately ruled a touchdown. First the referees consulted a replay to determine whether the ball hit the ground. There was no replay rule and no basis in the rules tondo this, but that's what happened. Second they conferred on the rule you refer to and you remember it incorrectly. In that year (and today) it was not legal f
i am an Oakland Raiders fan that can honestly admit it wasnt an illegal play. It was all Oakland's fault for being lazy on the play not to mention the guy at the end had a chance to tackle him. Some players even admitted they were lazy on the play. The only thing i have to say is the catch itself is a little iffy since they only have like one camera angle of it...
This was controversial not because of the catch itself, but of the rule at the time that said two different players on the offense cannot handle the ball on the same play, which has since been changed. The question is, when the ball was deflected, did it make contact with the Steelers wide reciever? If it did then technically the play should've been ruled dead when Franco Harris touched the ball. But it is too hard to tell.
I was 7 when I watched this game and this play with my father in Oakland in 72. Those of us who are Raiders fan will always say this play was illegal, Steeler fans will always say it wasnt. All I know is this. The Raiders started 2 dynasties with fluke plays. The immaculate reception and the Patriots dynasty with the Tuck rule.
i love how everytime the steelers win the opposing team's fans bitch and moan. the only excuse they can come up with is that the refs helped the steelers win. they're so damn classless they can't admit the steelers are the better team.
@Kinsella6 NBC didn't have the proper angle. In fact the main shot missed the actual catch. As far as I can tell, they didn't have another angle. The NFL Films I believe showed that Harris caught it. John Madden and Steeler haters alike can just get over it!
You don't go to the Superbowl 7 times because of luck, you go because you make it happen. Can you use the ''F'' word a few more times idiot? Theres children reading this stuff!
My dad and I are die hard Oakland fans, even though we live in PA. We both HATE the Steelers. He told me to look this up, they are the fucking luckiest team on this entire earth. All their superbowls are lucky, all their wins are lucky, he told me they're the luckiest team. He said that play was illegal as fuck, and it was. The ball clearly hit the damn ground, it just didn't show it on here, it does on live TV though. He said them Steeler fans would've went nuts if they said it was illegal.
If you didn't read the title, or if you just are illiterate, as I imagine all raiders fans are, this is the original broadcast. Meaning, this was the live tv shot.
@XoCoPeNHaGeNoX Diehard Oakland fans?? how's that working for you?? This is the same video they've shown for 40 years. This was the day we began to own the Raiders and it's been going on ever since.
@Clintbdee 40 years? Get your shit straight because Oakland owned the NFL from like the 70's all the way up until 2002. So don't give me that shit. Pitt didn't even get good into the 2000's. Yeah, they had a few superbowl wins back in the day and all, but they went like 1-15, 2-14, 0-16, shitty records like that in the 80s and 90s.
@XoCoPeNHaGeNoX Ok lets get my shit straight. In the 70's a .643 or better winning % 8 times and 8 playoff appearances, 6 AFC title games, 4 superbowl wins. In the 80's, .533 or better 5 times, 4 playoff appearances, 1 AFC title games. In the 90's, nine wins or better seven times, 5 playoff appearances, 3 AFC title game, 1 Super Bowl game . 2000-2011: 9 wins or better 9 times, 7 playoff appearances, 5 AFC title games, 3 Super Bowl appearances and two wins.
@XoCoPeNHaGeNoX And 0, 1 or 2 wins a year?? Minimum of 6 wins a year since 1971. At least know what you're talking about if you wanna argue (by that I mean check the records).
Here is the thing, now if that happend it woild have been ruled dead becasue everyone stoped and franco started running with the ball so by that time one raider noticed and went for the tackle.
Everyone knows the ball hit Tatum, including Raider fans, even though they won't admit it. If Tatum was more interested in playing the ball than nailing the receiver, the catch never would have happened. Poetic justice.
Not just that, try throwing the ball at a target moving away from you, and get it to bounce back towards you as hard as it does in the video. The laws of physics say that the ball hit Tatum.
you can clearly see it hits the raider's player. i was able to pause the video around 1:19 it might take you a few tries to get it to pause on the right frame but if you can you will see it hits the raider's player first.
Yeah, the steelers definitely cheated by intentionally throwing the ball off the head of another player so that it ricochets into Franco harris's grasp. That's the oldest one in the book.
the refs were they and they saw it with their own eyes,so people on youtube who cant even see what actually happened in this footage cant even start to say it was a bad call, or that harris was cheating
the refs got it right it hit off of tatum you saw something else im 15 but ive seen the evidence. im not from pittsburgh im from georgia but i think pit is the greatest when are you raider fans gonna let that go its over
I am neither a fan of the Steelers nor of the Raiders. I am a huge fan of an NFC team, (I won't say which one). I watched this game (I was 15). From every angle I've seen of this play, the ball bounced off Tatum, not Fuqua. Run the tape in slow motion, as I have, and stop it when the ball reaches Fuqua. Then advance it frame by frame. You'll actually see the ball go by Fuqua and hit Tatum. If I didn't see it for myself, I may have been unsure forever. The refs got it right.
Greatest play ever, but what was even better, the defeat of the raiders! Steelers the team of the ages, leaving the "raider nation" in the dust. Watch closely, Franco runs the play out, Tatum and the guy behind him showboatin', ha, you lose !
Hey Murtuc, relax man. Those ar die hard Raider Fans that are pissed off, even after 40+ years. I'm surprised those old guys know how to use a computer. Yeah I saw the slow mo AND still pics, the play was good. I live in Pittsburgh, I dare one of those guys you responded to say that here. They'd probably get shanked.
If you look to the right, you will see a youtube video titled "Immaculate Reception - original broadcast" You can see a different angle where it is more apparent that the ball hit Tatum, and that it did not hit the ground.
@bryandamadman Do you know what "cheater" means? It was up to the refs to rule, and they did, correctly I might add. See DSCN1129 for a slow motion film of this catch.
@murtuc yes. you need a high quality digital transfer that samples the video at a rate faster than the framerate of the original analog source. youtube doesn't allow that so this video really sucks for trying that. the guy in the DSCN1129 video has a high resolution source that, when in freeze frame, CLEARLY shows the ball hitting Tatum on the shoulder pad
@murtuc ya but if you look at the refs call in that situation. it was a bullshit call. and the ball hitting the ground, that's always a bulls hit call.
@dqlbmw You mean the team who sucked ref cock to win the two Super Bowls they had in the 2000's? Yeah, like Rapelessberger's touchdown, which was clearly NOT a TD on the replay? Even he admitted only his head broke the plane...man up and give the trophy to the Seahawks.
@dqlbmw aaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhhaaaaaaahahahahahahahaha you fucking wish. PATS ALL THE FUCKING WAY. STEALERS ARE FUCKING GARBAGE. they couldn't win a game without the ref's help if they tried. there are soo many blemishes on the stealers SB "wins" one wouldn't know where to start.
@EASkateRemakes actaully ur just to stupid to start. the steelers are the greatest organization in the league 6 super bowls who the fuck r u gonna compare them to.
@dfc278 dude right we cheat so much that we get bullshit calls to benefit the other team And @EASkateRemakes id give up all 6 trophies for the one that we 100 Percent should have from XXX
@bryandamadman how the fuck are they cheaters?okay lets go back super bowl XL steelers vs seahawks Steeler won fair and square and is no way there is a controversy. super bowl XL111 steelers vs cardinals steelersstart driving on Arizona with bout 2 minutes left. Ben Rothleisberger makes an insane throw to Holmes in the back of the end zone with clearly 2 feet in i even have a picture of him toe tapping on the sideline hanging on my wall in my basement EVEN IF HE DIDNT MAKE THE CATCH ITS ALL REFS
Actually there is a video of the play, from the endzone behind Bradshaw (a different view than this one) and it shows Franco catching it before it hit the ground. The real controversy was whether it hit a reciever or defender first. If I could find the view, I'd post it... I've only seen it on ESPN twice.
The Imaculate DEception- While we will never know what really happened because the camerman did what he was taught to video the player NOT the ball that is what they were taught to do while it is debatible we are subjected to have our opinions i think it bounced
Tatum said nothing before he died. Fuqua has been silent. I don't think he really knows. As to ball hitting ground, I do not have a picture. I do have a picture of the ball clearly hitting Tatum on his shoulder and not Fuqua. I've posted it in FceBook and on my blog, however YouTube will not permit me to direct you to it.
Where is there proof? It has been confirmed by players (on both sides), including Fuqua, as well as the refs, that they blew the call and the ball wasn't off Tatum. Some player have also said that the ball touched the ground after the hit.
@woodyfcf664 you should only know what a bad call is! check out the calls in the Oakland/Steelers game Nov. 21. As to how good the call on the Immaculate Reception was, there is proof positive that the ball first hit Tatum.
TRUE STORY...After the play a referee got on the phone. He called the Pittsburgh police & said, How many cops can you send to escort me out of here when i tell you what happened, which is that the TD didn't count?" The dispatcher said, "I can send you 6." The policeman said, 6 is all huh?" He promptly ran back out onto the field & said, "6 points for Pittsburg!"
@HankLandMan...Dude, i'm not arguing with you about a game that's been over for 38 years. All people involved say the same thing. That's all i can tell you.
I'm not arguing about the game, I'm telling you that that's what they "think" could have been a possibility. You said in all caps that it was a true story when that's wrong. Based on interviews I've seen nobody states it as fact. That's all.
I see you stoop to an unfunny response that was supposed(?) to be funny. I rest my case. I wasn't trying to argue with you, only correcting you but your ego can't allow that now can it? Same 'ol shit on youtube. At least you stand corrected now. You're welcome.
I wonder if Terry Bradshaw knew any of the people hugging him...

@XoCoPeNHaGeNoX And 0, 1 or 2 wins a year?? Minimum of 6 wins a year since 1971. At least know what you're talking about if you wanna argue (by that I mean check the records).

Here is the thing, now if that happend it woild have been ruled dead becasue everyone stoped and franco started running with the ball so by that time one raider noticed and went for the tackle.

idk whats better...tht or the giants play in 2007 superbowl
MrAthlete12 1 year ago
Everyone knows the ball hit Tatum, including Raider fans, even though they won't admit it. If Tatum was more interested in playing the ball than nailing the receiver, the catch never would have happened. Poetic justice.
NursingSoftware 1 year ago
@NursingSoftware
Not just that, try throwing the ball at a target moving away from you, and get it to bounce back towards you as hard as it does in the video. The laws of physics say that the ball hit Tatum.
malph182 1 year ago
you can clearly see it hits the raider's player. i was able to pause the video around 1:19 it might take you a few tries to get it to pause on the right frame but if you can you will see it hits the raider's player first.

Yeah, the steelers definitely cheated by intentionally throwing the ball off the head of another player so that it ricochets into Franco harris's grasp. That's the oldest one in the book.

steelers did not cheat my dad even saw this game he said it never hit the ground it hit the one player then franco harris cought it.

Must suck getting up every day knowing your team is a bunch of cheaters....Pittsburgh Cheaters, 4 wins, 2 cheat wins.

the refs were they and they saw it with their own eyes,so people on youtube who cant even see what actually happened in this footage cant even start to say it was a bad call, or that harris was cheating

the refs got it right it hit off of tatum you saw something else im 15 but ive seen the evidence. im not from pittsburgh im from georgia but i think pit is the greatest when are you raider fans gonna let that go its over
spate6 1 year ago

Xryan999X 1 year ago
If you look to the right, you will see a youtube video titled "Immaculate Reception - original broadcast" You can see a different angle where it is more apparent that the ball hit Tatum, and that it did not hit the ground.
Thank you.

Steelers caught the ball fair and square. If you look at it in slow motion the ball hit Tatum only; not Faqua. GO STEELERS!!!

How does Franco Harris live with himself knowing he's a cheater just like the Steelers are cheaters in their last two Super Bowls?
bryandamadman 1 year ago
@bryandamadman Do you know what "cheater" means? It was up to the refs to rule, and they did, correctly I might add. See DSCN1129 for a slow motion film of this catch.
murtuc 1 year ago 18
@murtuc the only reason the refs ruled in favor of the steelers is cus the refs didnt want the fans to start rioting
ANTCAMP44 1 year ago
@murtuc yes. you need a high quality digital transfer that samples the video at a rate faster than the framerate of the original analog source. youtube doesn't allow that so this video really sucks for trying that. the guy in the DSCN1129 video has a high resolution source that, when in freeze frame, CLEARLY shows the ball hitting Tatum on the shoulder pad
ACDC7369 1 year ago
@murtuc ya but if you look at the refs call in that situation. it was a bullshit call. and the ball hitting the ground, that's always a bulls hit call.

@dqlbmw You mean the team who sucked ref cock to win the two Super Bowls they had in the 2000's? Yeah, like Rapelessberger's touchdown, which was clearly NOT a TD on the replay? Even he admitted only his head broke the plane...man up and give the trophy to the Seahawks.
bryandamadman 1 year ago
@dqlbmw aaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhhaaaaaaahahahahahahahaha you fucking wish. PATS ALL THE FUCKING WAY. STEALERS ARE FUCKING GARBAGE. they couldn't win a game without the ref's help if they tried. there are soo many blemishes on the stealers SB "wins" one wouldn't know where to start.

MrJisawesome 9 months ago
Actually there is a video of the play, from the endzone behind Bradshaw (a different view than this one) and it shows Franco catching it before it hit the ground. The real controversy was whether it hit a reciever or defender first. If I could find the view, I'd post it... I've only seen it on ESPN twice.

The Imaculate DEception- While we will never know what really happened because the camerman did what he was taught to video the player NOT the ball that is what they were taught to do while it is debatible we are subjected to have our opinions i think it bounced

Such a bad call by the refs, wow......
addzack11 1 year ago
Tatum said nothing before he died. Fuqua has been silent. I don't think he really knows. As to ball hitting ground, I do not have a picture. I do have a picture of the ball clearly hitting Tatum on his shoulder and not Fuqua. I've posted it in FceBook and on my blog, however YouTube will not permit me to direct you to it.
murtuc 1 year ago
@murtuc The ball bounced off of Franco's foot, not the ground, so that part was legal.
calimar28 1 year ago

But it's not a true story though. Some Raider players came up with that as a scenario, not based on fact. Apparently Madden believed it.

I'm not arguing about the game, I'm telling you that that's what they "think" could have been a possibility. You said in all caps that it was a true story when that's wrong. Based on interviews I've seen nobody states it as fact. That's all.
