@BlackPoison29 Lolz!!.. you are correct.. it seems he has an image for any chicks' preference.. Edward Scissor Hands for goth chicks, Cry Baby for emo chicks, Pirates for the wild chicks, and countless roles where he's either a bad boy type or just a total badass.. not to mention he's one of the few male celebs to age so well.. lucky bastard.. lolz!!
Of course I still admire Johnny, but I liked him best in those years! Dead Man, Benny&Joon, Ed Wood, Arizona Dream, Sleepy Hollow and of course Fear& Loathing were great (Nick of Time not so great imho ;P) as well as Ninth Gate and Secret Window. Mid to late 90s and early 00s he was amazing. I don't know if it's because I'm getting older, but many newer JD movies don't have that allaround magic feeling anymore. No Public Enemies or Tourist cann pull off a Dead Man or Benny&Joon! :(
I like some artistic aspects of this movie, like how this movie is not like other typical western, shoot-em up movies, how the movie's in black and white, how the dialogue is very minimal (therefore letting the movie speak for itself), but in my opinion, the story's too short, therefore the movie doesn't need to be about 2 hours long. Then again, I don't know much about William Blake or his poetry (as I later did research about this movie), or maybe I need to watch other Jim Jarmusch's movies.
Surely that movie always appealed to me a bit, but I didn´t think at first that it would suddenly become one of my favourite movies. I couldn´t love "Limits of Control", but "Dead Man" clearly is a masterpiece full of good ideas in style, dialogues and plot - no matter what Roger Ebert says.
So glad to find other Dead Man fans out here posting, I got to see this under rated gem thanks to netflix last year..... still hunting a copy in stores to add to my Depp and Farmer collection :)
Most Excellent Movie, a sign of the times we are all in . No one character of this movie could be played by another actor now , set in memory , set in stone. Classico*****5 Star rating in my book's. Thank you Jim Jarasmusch, yer batt'in +500. here ****God's**\|/**SPeeD****
That's supposed to be sarcasm, right? Film's only 15 years old or so; shit, I'm pretty sure every actor featured in it is still alive. xD Besides, it's stupid and irresponsible to give such value/meaning to the past and recklessly disregard the present; start living in the now, dude.
@sockpuppetmartinez your implying EVERY actor in the movie is under the age of 30 and immortal from any form of death? the actor playing the father of the first man shot is dead.
lol I tried to subject mine to it also, dad fell asleep within the first minute or so, but still had a opinion of the whole thing, said it was terrible, my mom stayed up through it but overall not impressed. I had watched it earlier with a friend and we were both blown away. I think it is amazing. Some people just can't appreciate or understand some of the finer artistic creations things in this world. :P
Simply the best movie ever made. I say this after many viewings. Crispin Glover is so brilliant it's scary. It's the best part Billy Bob Thornton ever did also, hands down. Many other excellent cameos. The mixture of dizzying tragedy and comic relief are Shakespearean in scale. Those who didn't get it - including a lot of so-called professional movie critics - show how vapid the world has become, and how impossible it is for most modern people to hear and interpret a deep, archetypical message.
This film is awesome. One of my all time favorites. I keep renting it so much I need to buy it. Imagine David Lynch doing a western. And the soundtrack by Neil Young is fantastic, supposedly he recorded it while watching the film.
Yeah, it's obvious Young recorded the soundtrack while watching the movie. The tension, crescendo and perfect timbre of the music in relation to the film are from a person who is feeling the emotion in real time. No dislocated orchestration here. I've never been a big Neil Young fan; but he won me over here. There is even a video out somewhere which shows him playing while watching the movie. Now I am sure that it was how it actually when down, rather than a re-take for his own music video.
Yes, as you guessed, Neil made the score while watching the movie. There were screens all around him with his instruments in the middle of it all so he could see the movie no matter where he was facing. At least this is what I understand happened.
I watched this movie once on IFC, and i was like...oh Johnny Depp...i missed about the first 10 mins, so i bought it, and watched the whole thing over start to finish. very well done, amazing soundtrack.
it's one of my favorites. the acting is incredible. this movie is so underrated it's not even funny. definitely one of my favorite johnny depp films. i don't know about watching it online, i'm sure you could download it. who cares how you see it, just see it.
watch it! theres a book written about the film by the same title. I watch a lot of movies & this is one of my all time favorites. it's tied so well to William Blake's poetry & philosophies. The film works on so many levels & is worth several viewings & a bit of research.
This, guys...is a masterpiece. Just like every other Jim Jarmusch films, to be honest. But I don't know, this one tends on a subject that's been forgotten with the time...and the dwende representation is charismatic. Just wonderful.
Just finished watching the movie for the first time and loved it! Enjoyed the b+w as well. Also appreciated the accuracy of the indians. Loved the music as well, even though I'm not a Young fan, Lynyrd Skynyrd fan, and we have long memories. Anyway, if more directors thought about the art of the movie, like Dead Man, we would have more great movies, not just remakes of sitcoms. Like it or not, that's your choice, but I loved it.
The movie got polarized reviews. The critics either loved it as a masterpiece or panned it as a mess.
I thought Neil Young's music was very original, but the script needed a bit of work. Johnny Depp also seepwalks through parts of the movie where he should be looking terrified.
