Shame all the great Arenas with soul and history are all but gone (MSG) the only one remaining. Gone are the likes of Spectrums,Forums,Gardens and Olympias. Now its all Corporate arenas with their corporate souls and ticket prices...gone are the organ players,Kate Smiths,Roger Doucets,Sign Mans,Frenchie the horn player. Todays NHL has no soul or character...just a cookie cutter market driven circus.
@ldhorricks they just tore down the spectrum...across the street was Veterans Stadium...I was at the corner where these palaces stood and it really looked naked...i had no idea where I was...regarding organ players, none of the new arenas, parks or stadiums have them anymore, all piped in music...When citizens bank park opened, they had Paul Richardson, the longtime organ player at the Vet, on the concourse with a keyboard...Sad
My late father, Steve Summers, covered this game for the Harrisburg Patriot-News and I still have his story from this game framed on my wall. Hard to argue that the two Cups weren't the greatest Flyers moments, but to me, this is the greatest and always will be.

the leafs haven't mattered in a long long time what are you talking about, lol. the Flyers have missed the playoffs but 2 times since 95 and was the worst team in 2006 in the league. The first time in their franchise history. Now playing for the Cup a 8th time. give credit where it is due...
Last October, when Jimmy Rollins blasted that game winning 2-run double off of Broxton in the NLCS, it was the 2nd greatest sports moment of my life. This goal by JJ Daigneault was the 1st!
Thanks for posting this. I've never seen a crowd as energetic and raucous as those at the Spectrum during the 1987 playoffs. This brings back some great memories. Game 3 in the Edmonton series was another awesome comeback. But it's not all great memories - as we know how this series ended!
This game lives in my heart forever. I was at this game. A teenager with my father who was dieing of cancer. My father's doctor gave him the tickets. He knew what big Flyers fans we were. You can here my on the tapes of the game screaming Come on Zez for Peter Zezel. I lived and bleed Orange. It was the greatest gift because its one of the last things my dad did just me and him. To be there when the Spectrum rocked was awesome.
Thanks for sharing that swr532. As a teenager, I went to a lot of games with my dad and my brother. We lived near Edmonton so we saw so many amazing games and players. Those games will always live in my heart as you said.
Almost any other year the Flyers would've won the Cup. I've been following hockey for 40+ years and those Edmonton teams ranked up there as the greatest ever. That Flyers team was beloved for a reason...they had the heart of a lion.
Close you eyes dome1972... I'm going to take you on a trip down memory lane.
The place, Northlands Coliseum, Edmonton, Alberta, Canada.
The time, April 30, 1986
Steve Smith swoops behind the net and grabs the puck. See him prepare to let the clearing attempt go...remeber how you cringed because Fuhr wasn't half the puck handler Hexy was and he gets in the way
Passing... SCORES!!!
Fuhr, the first goalie to score a playoff goal!!! (Assist Steve Smith)
I was at this game, and let me tell you, this was the loudest I had EVER, EVER , heard the Spectrum. The place was literally shaking. The loudest I ever heard the Vet was in the Phils '77 playoffs against the Dodgers. That was the game Burt Hooten was walking everyone, only to see the Phils blow the game at the end. BLACK FRIDAY. Anyway, this was a GREAT Flyers moment. I loved those teams of the 70's & 80's.
the broad street bullies era!!! i miss the vet and i'll miss the spectrum too. i remember going to the game where kevin millwood pitched a no hit game at the vet. it was crazy!!!
they didn't blow it, just face it the flyers seriously overachieved, the oilers were a god dam dynasty with 6 to possible 8 hall of famers, how many for the flyers maybe 2?
Fyi..idk if hes still alive....cause this was like 20 somethin years ago when she told me.

This was the best series. So exciting, and so heartbreaking to lose that 7th game. Such memories

I still can't believe that that group of Flyers, with a rookie goaltender, took the legendary Oilers to 7 games.

The 87 Stanley Cup Finals was a great contrast between a physical team the Flyers and a finesse team in the Oilers
