exactly kirk even tho the prop weighs a few hundred pounds or so the force of it spinning even at 800 - 1000 rpms is astounding and even the might merlin takes a minute to settle it down
@MrZambology 2 SU's? Nah! I heard that these things were infact fuel injected, as they could go into steep dives and sharp climbs without stalling or suffering from fuel starvation...i've had a look into these incredible engines a little more, Lack of fuel starvation was the reason we could out manouvre german aircraft!
@1700iDiGuy They were definitely fitted with carbs, the Spitfire engines could stall in positive G dives, to avoid this the planes had to roll as they dived, The ME109 was fuel injected and didn't have the same problems regards.
@1700iDiGuy Checked it on wiki, initially a pair of SU's which were later replaced with pressurised Bendix Stromberg carbs. Amazing really everything from the old mini to Rolls Royce's were fitted with SU carburetors, really simple design I used to see them everywhere.
@MrZambology oh well, i'm surprised! 2 SU's? 1 per bank of six cylinders.. 12 liters either side, i'd imagine those carbs they'd have a pretty massive set of jets and an equally large Carb throats!
@1700iDiGuy Really simple technology easy to service. If you think about it that carb design was used from the 1930's till the1990's that's some production run. And your absolutely right, the diameter of the throat must have been massive, there was a big supercharger blowing through them as well. What an amazing engine, the greatest piston engine ever built? Certainly in the top ten, "whatever is rightly done however humble is noble." Henry Royce's legacy is still felt to this day. RIP
i would throw a dummy prop on there because on other engines (such as lycoming and continental), the prop gives the engine a load to to work against, preventing from over rev and damaging the engine. it will still run, but not well.
But this beauty is of course a completely different animal and made to wartime specs, which probably gives it a hell of a lot more endurance than any GA aircraft could ever have. A really stunning engine to have i must say.
THAT ENGINE SOUNDED GREAT. THE SCHOOL THAT I WENT TO HAD A V12 ALLISON AND A 220 JAKE THAT I WOULD RUN 2-4 TIMES A YEAR. THE V12 WAS A REAL GAS HOG. BY YHE TIME YOU PRIME IT AND RAN FOR 30 SEC. IT WENT THROUGH 5 GAL OF FUEL. THROUGH THE YEARS I HAVE WORK ON AND REBUILT QUITE A FEW ENGINES INCLUDING A OX5 AND.. I THANK YOU FOR SHARING THIS ..ONE MORE THING PLEASE PUT A FLYWHEEL OR A BREAK IN PROP ON THE ENGINE IT MAKES IT ALOT LESS STRESSFUL ON THE COMEPONENTS ON SHUT DOWN
wheres the super charger mounted?is the motor going into a spitfire?,i was looking at the replica full size spitfires on the net if there was anything in the world i could have it would be a spitfire supermarine
What a fantastic piece of machinery, and work of art! The Merlin has an interesting story, especially when Packard started building them under license from Rolls-Royce. I wonder, with such a short stack exhaust, if the maintence crews had to replace allot of burnt exhaust valves back in the day?
Yea, the fumes out of the stacks would make me think it was running a little hot, but i guess not,
Ive seen 51's and spits do this too after run on when they shut tthe engine off, SO I guess its a normal thing and theres nothing wrong with the engine or its inside's,
Quite true. There is a fair amount of compression ready to pull it up as soon as it stops firing. To some degree, the gear reduction on the front of the engine would have some flywheel effect to it, as well as the supercharger, so I suppose there is no reason why it couldn't run without a prop anyway. By the way, do you like the wisps of smoke that come out of the exhaust tips after the engine has stopped? I know I do.
Not so. The coolant is in the large tank that forms the engine base. It is not running "dry". You wouldn't spend months and months getting it to where it is shown here only to throw it all away for lack of coolant. So don't panic. It will go for a while yet.
Despite it not sounding good at all, the engine continues to perform well for those fortunate to see it in real life. This also despite many experts saying it wouldn't run at all without at least a dummy prop on it. It was going to have one fitted, but started quite happily without it while the owner was winding it over to check oil pressure etc. So, no, it is still alive and well, waiting to run again next time. Good eh?
timing just a tad out ? would run better under a bit of load I am thing=king , well done for restoring and getting working again , A great piece of British engineering , alas British engineering and manufacturing is being slowly but surely killed off by the politicians and money men.
il fascino di qusti motori e' incredibile. the spitfire.... near modena where i live (in italy) i have seen a tractor pulling with this engine. the sound is incredible.
Smooth, refined V12 power. Only 27 ltrs - it was considerably smaller than the equivalent units from DB - 34-44.5 ltrs and BMW 41.8 ltrs, and had a low compression ratio-only 6,0. But had really excellent power to weight ratio due to excellent supercharging - specially in 66 form. A great engine that saved the free world back in the 40's. I hope you had enjoyment rebuilding it and that you continue to enjoy showing it off. Good on ye.
What can you say after watching this ,these engines were build beautifully ! is direct fuel injection used or am i mistaking it for the shielded spark plug wires ? At lest it starts better then the 4 row radials they ran well but were a pain to start because of there primitive ignition and large bore cylinders. are there internal balancer's in this engine ?
These would have to be one of the greatest piston engines of all time.
I went for a trip in the P51 Mustang at Pt Cook about 10 years ago which is powered by one of these engines and the sound of that V12 was just beautiful.
I think it says alot about the balancing of this old engine that it runs just fine without a flywheel or prop on the output. It just shows what an amazing engine it really is!!
Does anybody have more info on this? Did the guy rebuild it himself? Or did he just acquire it?
The gent with the earmuffs owns the engine which he rebuilt out of two wrecks. As he says on the tape, they turned up only 30 miles from his place. The exhaust pipes were made from pipe slit in half and pieces of flat added to make them the shape they are. Everyone said the engine wouldn't run without at least a dummy prop, but when he was winding it over to check the fuel system, it started up. The gear drive on the front probably gives some flywheel effect.
With so many cylinders the high number of power strokes enable the engine to run without a flywheel as one power stroke provides the power for the compression stroke of another cylinder, the less number of cylinders the lumpier it becomes!!
About 3,000 with a constant speed airscrew, which is all you need in a plane with a good prop. If the pitch control malfunctioned the engine would 'run away' and rev itself to death.
anyone watch topgear well now we can have a merlin v12 food blender. ya wifes got the vacume goin, just goin the kitchen and fire-up ya food blender lol

With big Diesel engines it is not good to run without load, most are designed to run at 85% the entire time and some even 100% MCR.
Is that allso a problem with petrol engines?
And that is the most epic thing you can have running in your shed!
Unbeleivable

you know when an aircraft engine has a prop on it and it shuts down,
well, the enertia of the prop keeps it spinning at least two or 4 blades till it stop's,
But your rolls dont have a prop on it so i guess it'll stop a little quicker as it not having a prop on it ,
