  • where is the instruction?

  • The ideas are great, but I'm not sure it's all "in the pocket". All of the eighth notes off the quarter note triplet and sixteenth note lines in the world won't help you if they don't swing.

  • For someone who already knows a little bit about improvisation and music theory, this video is priceless...Our friend has given us a wealth of ideas - a collection of great best licks and lines ("all in one place"), complete with visuals on how to execute them. Why the critical attitudes???

  • Wonderful lot of ideas!

  • i have a clear breakdown of a Bb jazz run on the gl360 channel on youtube. just look for the "musical insight" section, you'll love it!!!

  • sounds like a drunk bebop driver.

  • You are a GREAT pianist...but this isn't a tutorial. Whoever said above that you can't 'TEACH" someone to play jazz riffs and lics is mistaken. I know many many Memphis musicians who have shown others little lics, runs and such and it's very helpful. It would be nice if someone such as yourself would do that. I found one guy who does and it's helped me on stage very very much. Love your playing..you're very good.

  • I don't have the theory under my belt, but i have a pretty good ear. For non-theorists its like playin a solo to Autum Leaves in Bflat, just the first verse, over and over. In light of this its pretty cool!!!

  • Sounds like everybody loves raymond.

  • Wow! This video taught me everything I know about piano! LOL. 11 minutes of showing off. And the song gets really annoying after 4 minutes.

  • Very impressive! I ordered the DVD yesterday.

  • infomercial

  • step by step?????? I'm trying to figure it out when did i miss the first step!!!!!

  • Metronome on 1 and 3 is irritating.

  • i think if you didn't learn anything from this video that's okay. you've been playing for 20 years. i can appreciate a video of just the hands great playing without the "good for tv" camera cuts and angles if this were a live performance.

  • sick vid indeed!!!!!! i wonder if itz still on sale

  • freakin awesommmmmeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee......

  • Terrific! And, still waitin for that next DVD. Loved the others!

  • FUCKING AMAZING!!!

  • jazz music 4 life lol ! its the best notting else

  • i thought this was teaching me how to do a run not listen to a 12 minute solO!

  • Well if you look CLOSELY you can pick up a crap load of runs that he did in his solo. Duuhh.

  • wow man 0_0

  • umm, i like lil wayne, and i'm sure i've been to more classical concerts this month than you have in a year, and i can probably play more instruments, and write better music. just because someone prefers rap or rock and stuff over things like jazz doesn't mean they don't know music, well they probably don't but they do know what they like and maybe jazz isnt' it. let them like what they wan't you can't make someone like jazz or stay awake through Shostakovich's Symphony no.1 in f minor.

  • And JAzz rotted from Clasical music. And Rock rooted from JAzz and Blues. and Jip hop is sorta like jazz in way :) So if you learn the rotts, you can play it all :)

  • i love jazz and i can't stand lil wayne but I would have to agree with you anyway. everyone is different but the magic of music is that there is something for everyone, even if you have to make your own style. rock on, music lovers of all kinds!

  • No you can't, you are totally right. And that is why the world is in the shape it's in. Because people want the easy way out, or the simpler way. They don't wanna actually work and do something BAD ASS!!!!!!

  • to charmingkyle... BORING? are you out of your fricken mind? your probably one of those gay kids that like bands like nickelback or lil' wayne god I f in hate mtv and radio... it all killed real music and brainwashed the masses, no body knows real music anymore

  • my last message also goes to pm1248

  • hey i listen to lil wayne and nickelback. but i still know what real music is. i kinda find that statement a lil offensive.

  • @02Biggs

"but i still know what real music is"

How can you be offended if even you don't consider that real music.

  • @obrsl thers no such thing as real music, music is more of a language

  • hah, I didn't realize I was talking to Stevie Wonder over here. I agree, however, those were his words, not mine. It is my feeling that people should listen to whatever they enjoy/whatever moves them. To me, the music in discussion is just full of musicians with nothing substantial to say.

  • don't say nobody..the masses can go fuck themselevs..and i ain't old,i'm 15,and yes i think that most mainstream music today sucks real time, much reather listen to Jazz,Blues, bebop, classical music etc..but there is some underground music today who can really blow your mind on how amazing it is.

but back to subject, most people and espcially kids, don't have a clue about real music,so let them hear thier pop,and let us enjoy the best music=]

  • eigth hours a day at least for 3 years and done........ nice video

  • your badass, i make jazz hip hop beats, im not nearly as clean as you are though for sure, look fotward to learning more

  • Your are a very skillful piano player. Some great technic. Even though its long I still think its amazing. I wouldn't know where to start. I am also a jazz piano player. Im teaching myself. I am not the best when it comes to soloing and doing runs. I hope that your CD lessons will help me gain confidence in my soloing and running up and down the piano. Keep making more jazz videos!!

  • This is a pretty good demonstration. I'm just starting off on keyboard to improve my comp skills, and you're right, you have to build your vocabulary so you don't run out of words in mid sentence. 5 stars and a subscription.

  • very skillful but boring

  • :O nice so..... where is the step by step???

  • yeh i know bud to play it by yourself it be pretty kwl

  • nothing wrong with using scales and pattterns, whatever works for you. I think the intent is what matters. and to an untrained ear this is not noticeable..

  • The click on 1 and 3 is really distracting! This would be much better without it, or put it on 2 and 4 where it belongs.

  • shouldn't that metronome click be on the second beat?

  • dang that was beast, dude, ii have good taste of syncopated and stuff, nut i only to steps down trough the scale of jazz, the easy one, the one that stars with c and then e flat

  • to long

  • I understand it's supposed to be a teaser but it's way too long for that. It sounds like one long exercise. Nothing wrong with that when your learning to develop skills but most here are getting the wrong idea.

  • Good ideas

  • Disjointed noodling.

  • what's the cadence?

  • Better than what most can do. You do have skills. Wish somebody would break down Herbie Hancock's runs, licks and chordal harmony.

  • Good ideas but you're a little messy.

  • 11 minutes????? whoa!!! Good ideas man but a lil too much, sorry to say

  • too busy. and no feeling. left hand is dull. right hand is just running.

  • Too busy. Kindoff looses it's musicality and

begins to sound loungy and repetitive.

  • i dont like modern jazz. i prefer the old 1940s jazz. the modern jazz is too augmented and doesn't seem to be moving anyway. it feels still. stuff like tuxedo junction is really good.

  • sickkkkkkkkkkkkk ooooo.. d runs re nuts

  • NOSSA.... Muito BOM!!!!! Parabens... Excelente!!!!

  • this is great stuff, where can I get the DVD?

  • i can only improvise pop wise, so it ends up sounding like umbrella, or my immortal lol, i wish i can do jazz

  • Why not leave some space?

  • dude this is sick!

if you don't know what sick means, teenagers use it as "awesome"

  • It's surely a huge piece of morsel to bite. One can swallow it only by breaking it down to small pieces, perhaps using a slowing down transcriber program. An useful syllabus of nice chorus phrases could be produced thus. And that's for sure a challenging and useful task. Of course some phrases are just "where I'm going from here?" stuff, but tht's a part of any fluent improvised solo too. By the way, the metronome is just to make the VD sound more academic, I guess.

  • Hear and Learn - the clue to how this works is in the title. Now, you're losing so many customers in expecting them to follow this. It sounds good but without the score it's pretty useless. It's not educational. it should basically be in with the players. Let's see the notes written down and you'd have me onboard

  • I'm sorry but the site isn't see and play. That isn't the vision. There is a significant amount of people interesting only in learning by ear and that's what we have specialized in for 8 years. Simply search for scores if you want to read. I've never heard a great jazz musician solo from sheet music. Have you?

  • This clip is just him playing. The dvd actually breaks down stuff. It's 5.5 hours long. You can find other clips of him not playing and actually showing some of the chord progressions and solos.

  • Thanks for the reply. - there are so many jazz courses, what I'm saying is that your fellow plays really well and I can see lots of pianists liking it and wanting to play like him and follow it. The easier you make it the better for you. You're excluding those who prefer to learn from a score. Why not do as some others do and have the score above? Jazz piano is complicated enough. No one really solos from a score but many learn to solo from scores. I don't this would compromise your 'ethos'

  • @hearandplay

Marsalis just composed "Swing Symphony" for the NY Phil. opener. Full of composed solos. Jelly Roll Morton wrote all his stuff sheet music, not fake sheets, applied for copyright. Jazz is dying because of endless jam sessions without arrangements. The best improvisors read music. That is not a hindrance to playing by ear, on the contrary, it only helps. Serialism is a challenge, but one not hindered by reading music, only by people not willing to play extemporaneously.

  • @TrinkBruder Well put…I appreciate your observation - "jazz music is dying because of endless jam sessions w/o arranging"…Arranging is so essential and so powerful…arranging takes music composition and performance from exercises in aimless meandering, which inevitably lead to stagnancy, to a beautiful art form where an intelligent statement is made…

  • @hearandplay You're a moron.

  • why hav the metronome? you've got bass and drums and you still hav the metronome!!!

  • Maybe it is for the bass and the drums lol.

  • Very nice. This is only for the hard core jazz pianist. I can appreciate it. I can see why so many are frustrated with this clip. I personally think that this is great stuff to study. Thanks for pushing the envelope.

  • If anyone is interested in the key, it is F# dorian flat 4 sharp 6

  • he did a standard in jazz which was pretty good...and I think the point of the video is to just kinda catch what stuff he's playin...if u play piano it's easier to understand but i was just watching the arpegios and it helped me a bit to see what kinda runs u can do...so it's just watching absorbing at a fast pace...

  • i've been playing jazz piano for around 20years and didnt pick up anything from the vid at all... i cant see how anyone could pick up anything from it

  • Actually, it's just a sample of his playing. There are plenty other videos on our profile of him *not* playing and breaking down some of the concepts. Then of course, there is the website.

    Thanks,

    HP

  • What exactly is meant by "Learn... step by step"??

  • Are we suppose to actually SEE what he's doing?

  • piano players (not that im excluding other instrumentalists) can easily pick out the scales he's using, especially on the turnarounds. but to be honest, a seasoned musician would not take this video seriously

  • well,it's a video about runs. so he only did runs...11 minutes :D

  • Thi ssounds awkward for jazz.

  • I learned nothing from that. I don't really understand the fact of this video. It should be called "Jazz Pianist Runs Out Of Ideas 101"

  • ROLF!!!

True dat... he doesn't have any emotion to communicate musically, so he relies on his pattern and scales.

  • @chipotlemonkey

No Offence Mr or Mr's but go study the Piano or better yet Music theory first, then come back and watch this it will make a whole lot of sense,I guarantee it!

  • @chipotlemonkey

    Hallooo!!!

THIS IS JUST A DEMONSTRATION VIDEO!!!... for what U can expect in this dvd..

Check other clips for the Tutorial part...

  • Ok nvm. I see the number so I may give these guys a call.

  • What kind of scales is he throwing at those chords. I have never been able to cultivate that really abstract, outside the key sound that he has going on. Is he using diminished scales, 8-note dominant? Maybe just throwing a lot of chromatics in? I've been playing for years. I can play anything I can remember by ear, but I can't play stuff like that. Where can i learn?

  • Have you heard of altered dominant scales? Side-slipping? Tri-tone substitutions? He is using all of those. Also, the chord voicings lead the soloing into different scalar approaches, like diminished whole-tone, whole-tone, and lydian augmented.

  • metronome clicking on 1 and 3 he must be a savant? LOSER

  • it's not bach thats for sure, abit chopin maybe

  • sick runs!!

  • Hello fellow Jazz enthusiasts - I want to start learning how to play Jazz piano - how and where do I start?

  • there are some great moments in there, but at other times you kinda lose it abit... chord progression based on autumn leaves but you should have played the tune first, improvised, then returned to the tune... and leave out the metronome... why have it in??

  • I thought it was great! The vid is about runs though so the actual song is kind of irrelevant... your right about the metronome though, he already has the beat going.

  • this is beautiful loved it, nice piano work be blessed JT

  • eh not that great i can already play something like that, looking for something for advanced players

  • agreed, terrible comping, and why the hell is there a metronome? Technique is bad too, plus every lick is incredibly forced, doesn't blend, etc. He's got a good vocab, but it doesn't always work. I could SURE use some of his bigger runs, however. the thing at 1:35 is ATROCIOUS.

  • dang

  • Ah yeah, that IS Autumn Leaves...sounding good.

  • Bottom line: the guy is promoting an instructional dvd and showing you what he knows. And, from what i see, he knows quite a bit. I'm impressed.

  • First of all, it doesn't matter if it IS "all II-V-Is", because what he's doing is giving you a "demonstration" of jazz piano soloing. But, beyond that, it ISN'T a so-called "charade" of II-V-Is. Follow the bass and you can hear that.

Many songs share the same chord progressions, thus it could be one of many songs. But, we'll never know since he's using this time to demonstrate "jazz soloing", rather than playing the melody to a song chorus, that would tell us exactly what the song is.

  • I'd say his left hand is too loud, but then again what do I know?

  • id say itd have to do with the acoustics of the room,,, im guessing the mic is built into the camera,,, and as any sound tech knows bass will dominate over treble with such a small mic,,, so yeah ,,, the hand aint too loud,,, its appears that way cos of acoustics and mic position

  • Huh, I would have guessed that this was an electronic piano; but it might be because of that exact reason.

  • it could be an electric piano,, but electric pianos still have peddles and the keys are still velocity sensitive,, but meh,, it some nice playing nonetheless :D

  • Hi stormtrooper, (or anyone with a good musical ear). Please help. Can you name the song in this video? "A Mistery for Jazz"

  • It sounds like it's Autumn Leaves

  • But there isn't a bridge or anything so it could also be a charade of II-V-Is.

  • haha jazz piano virtuoso much? lol

  • Do you have any Teaching Video material?I want to buy it ,(Out of USA),Thanks

  • You have so many lessons

If you look to my page/playing

    Can you advise me where

to start in your lessons -

    at which number ?

  • Wow! He's really awesome! I would need two brains to accomplish that - one for the left hand and one for the right. Love the whole arrangement!

  • It's really a very skilled pianoplayer who has a lot of experience to (and with the help of Jesus and other real good jazz/gospelcat's you to can reach this same level of playing. If you study and press on hard enough.

    Keep your hopes UP:)

    GodBlezZzU ALL JOA

  • I really love his lines and left hand voicings. I listened to the Chord Scheme and thougt the progression is like this.

    Cmi7 / F7 / Bbmi7 / Eb7 /

    Ami7b5 / D7b9 / Gmi7 / G7 /

(10 measure Scheme) And of course altering some of the dominant Chords.(the mi7 are sometimes also dominant chords, He changes it around which I really like and keeps it creative.

    Keep your hopes UP:)

    GodBlezZzU ALL JOA

  • Great tube. One complaint, that click track in the background is killing me. I can't enjoy the playing because it is sooooo annoying!

  • That left hand - I was just looking for -

Could you do a blues (Improve mine on my youtube page) - Thank a lot and I'll take your lesson !! ( I place my simple piece here)

  • I just happened upon this - gotta have it. Is the DVD available now?

  • Excellent. You make it look so easy.

  • Bless You!!!

  • I wish my 'by ear' fingers where that clear and fast!!! -Excellent!!!

  • I purchased the DVD its awesome it really improved my playing, great tube

  • Amazingly Awesome! Fantastic sounds coming from
