Why, oh why, is it that mad scientists always seem to want world domination? What would they do with the world once they have it? And do they even realise that as a piece of real estate, it's useless because there's no-one to sell it to? :-D

@bojstafford Apparently, it was as segment from "THE SKATEBIRDS", which were a kind of avian version of "BANANA SPLITS"!

@bojstafford Mystery Island was one of the segments on the hour long version of the Skatebirds, which aired on Saturday mornings in 1977. The Skatebirds was Hanna Barbera's attempt at recreating the Banana Splits and Mystery Island was an attempt to replicate the Splits' Danger Island segment.

I'm 40 and I remember getting up on Saturday mornings and watching this.

I loved this show as a kid. Used to get up really early to watch it. Mainly because of the robot even though they kind of ruined the Lost In Space Robot in the process. He sat with these modifications for years until he was repaired back to his original look in the late '80's. I have a couple of props from this show that managed to survive the years.

I love robots, but POPS has to be the most useless robot ever. I used to watch this serial and I can't recall the robot ever using its arms or doing anything other than answer some questions and give the kids rides.

Not to mention that it pissed me off what they had done to the LIS B9 robot!

Actually, POPS did prove to be useful on more than one occasion.  It did have a force field device of its own which it used to temporarily defeat the bad guys. Plus it managed, once its dying battery was recharged, to awaken Chuck, Sue and Sandy from the 1,000 year sleep curse of the Time Senteniels.

it wasn't an LIS clone, it was the LIS robot that they modified for this series. When someone found it at 20th century fox, it looked that and they spent money restoring it to its former LIS look again.

Wow, was there nothing they didn't rip off in this show. An LIS robot clone (badly done). A bunch of props from old Irwin Allen shows. Very bad acting, and recaps that run too long. And that Atoll isn't big enough to get lost on, let alone hide from the bad guys. If this show makes it to DVD, there is no sanity in the world.

This brings back memories. Although I felt Mystery Island had the potential to be a fun adventure show, most of the time it failed to live up to it. Although Danger Island was much better, still there were occasional good bits on Mystery Island. Is it possible someone might download the episodes on YouTube, as they did with Danger Island?

Pops is a recycled Lost in Space robot! But its voice was done by Frank Welker rather than Dick "Danger Will Robinson" Tufield.

Not the only time a cartoon studio reused an old TV show robot, did you know Peepo the robot first seen on Filmation's Space Academy later moved on to Filmation's Jason of Star Command?

It is a bit different than the B-9 robot of Lost In Space.

@adobePC The studio made some modifications to it, but it is one of the ones used on Lost In Space. Some magazine, Starlog perhaps, did an article on the robot from LiS and they interviewed the guy in the suit, the guy who did the voice for it, and they also wrote about what happened to the actual robots. They mentioned that one of them was used for Mystery Island.

This segments where also featured on the Captain Caveman TV series from the late 70's. Still wonder why the theme to CB Bears was used for the credits outro?
