According to the record, they are descendants of Joseph who was sold into slavery in Egypt by his brothers. Joseph however had the ability to prophecy like his father.
They migrated from their lands of inheritance due them as sons and daughters of Ephraim and Menasseh of the Old Testament and were lead by the Lord by boat to Central America and they flourished.

Why are you so certain they were Mayan? Where does the word "Mayan" appear in the Book of Mormon? If the Mayans were in ancient times Nephites, why does no record exist at all within the oral tradition of anything within the Book of Mormon?

In 1512 the Spanish found the Maya and destroyed 99% of Mayan hieroglyphics, because they considered it blasphemy that their records claimed a "WHITE BEARDED GOD" appeared to them and taught them. There are four hieroglyphics left for study today. And they have Hebrew similarities too!

There are many thingswe are not taught in History classes, as in all the other classes.
We are taught what it is felt we need in order to fit into the work sphere.
