Your numbers baffle & puzzle. The stock engine makes 130 at the crank, with no accessories, so how can you achieve more than that with a stock engine? Josh at DPI said the header systems only free up about 10 hp, more with cams. What else have you done?? I'm totally curious!! Port? Polish? Extrude honed?
@holdenyj equal length headers sold by DPI, DeLorean, & others will reduce your low end torque & total HP. I don't recommend them. I posted dyno results on DMCTalk comparing Stage I DeLorean exhaust with my setup. I have much more lower end torque & upper end HP. My setup has an intake w/less restrictive air filter, my exhaust, & an MSD ignition. DMCNW can confirm my results. Porting is good but I don't recommend polishing.
sorry after reading your description it makes more sense, the gains are pretty good for just an exhaust. maybe a resonator will help smooth out the sound
@youpooper18 that's what you get with little to no baffeling. Most cars would sound that way with a similar setup. I made modifications to the exhaust to include more baffeling and give it a smoother sound without the high RPM rasp.
@DCFilmsStudio Ah the magic of movies. The engines in ALL 3 movies were bone stock with some clever editing in post production to give them that V8 sound they had mixed with some electronic whines and whistles.
The PRV engien can be very reliable and fast if well tuned and maintained I have this excellent engine in my Peugeot 604 Gti and its very fast an reliable my 2,9 Litre cranks out 175 HP without any change!! (5 Speed handshifted)
I have got a very good hint for you to keeping the nice old DOHC Engine in good shape with todays ultra dry eco fuels: Use 1:100 API TC two stroke oil / fuel mix as regular driving fuel, that keeps the old fuel-system gaskets, rubber parts, alloy parts etc... and cast iron metal surfaces of those vintage engines in excellent shape...and it also lubricates the valves and upper piston regions. Most Porsche vintage owners in Germany do so :) Also keeps carbs and tank clean and rustfree
It's a brilliant car, looks amazing but the stock performance is utterly shocking. Even without the emission equipment it'll struggle to put out 200 bhp.
@hurrhurrbtard By todays standards yes, but the car is almost 30 years old. Compared to cars of the time, the Corvette was 190hp V8, Porsche 911SC 175hp. The only comparable car at the time that cracked 200hp was the Ferrari 308GTSi which had 205hp. With modern technology, anyone can get a DeLorean well over 200hp. Exhaust, cams, and intake will get the car to 200hp or more. And with a 2400lb weight and 200hp, the DeLorean is quite sporty quick.
@MrHamlet Eh, 0-60 in 10.5 seconds hasn't been considered quick for the best part of half a century. The thing was struggling 140 bhp with the emission equipment in the states... which is where most DeLoreans were sold.
@hurrhurrbtard Well I have seen a stock DeLorean do 8.5 - 9 sec, but you are missing the point I made that a DeLorean upgraded to 200hp would be quick. A rough guess would be about 0-60 in ~6+ sec. I had a 250hp Turbo DeLorean that did 0-60 in 5.5. But let's say for sake of arguement that it is a hopelessly slow car. Should that be the defining aspect of it? If power were the only important aspect of a car, they would all look the same. There are plenty of great cars out there that aren't fast.
@hurrhurrbtard If I knew you were just commenting to show your immaturity and be combative rather than have an intellectual conversation, I wouldn't have wasted my time with you. Believe what you will, it's the truth. Do the math - there are plenty of websites out there to help you with the math.
@hurrhurrbtard 250 hp in a 2,700lb car could EASILY do 0-60 in 5.5,if not sooner.my 3350lb trans am comes stock 285 hp and does 0-60 in 5.5.so think about it.
@hurrhurrbtard You raise a reasonably valid point, but have the single most retarded name in history and your videos are the worst attempts at trolling I have ever seen.
If you don't like the DeLorean's performance then you're welcome to adhere to conformity and go buy a BMW on lease like every other middle class citizen who wants to pretend he has money.
This car was built to pull heads, not run the quarter mile.
Very Important check all water hoses under the intake manifold they can leak and the engine looses its water without dropping so you register the water loss if its too late--allwys check water level in Radiator.
Are you going to run this one NA or change the aspiration? Like you've said lots of people have changed it to a 350 small block or even some to a three-o-duece. I have seen a Delorean with a VQ35 Nissan motor of all things. Sounds good dude keep it up!
I have seen the VQ engine - great setup. I will keep it NA for now - I expect to get it over 300hp NA. Large blocks create many problems due to the weight. It damages the frame, makes the car unstable, causes lots of understeer, and it just overall dangerous. I want to keep a light high powered engine in the car, and I would like to see what I can do with the DeLorean engine before I give up on it.
@5dmc1 first of all, its a modified exhaust, secondly, sound doesn't mean s***, thirdly, its only "95 rwhp & 100 rw torque" stock, as stated in the description (You need to read), and lastly thats not much power.
@MrHamlet yeah right after i saw this video i watced a different one about how there was a fuel crisis and the delorean sold well because of the mileage. then the company went under whe mr. DeLorean went to court under cocaine trafficking charges. very interesting history on these cars
@SirTomothy It does have a very colorful history. Only a few years ago when gas was approaching $5/gallon, people seemed to be more impressed with my 27mpg. :)
I gotta admit that with simple mods it sounds very similar to that of the Back to the Future Delorean, lol. If it helps I've heard that Oldsmobile Aurora V8's (The 4.0 Liter, isn't it?) Fit nicely in Deloreans, but it requires moving the motor mounts :(. Aside from that, I'd just mess with the compression and see what you could do, but that's up to you and how heavily you want to modify it :P
I have a Ford Cobra 4.6 Supercharged V8 that I was going to drop in, but decided against it for weight performance reasons.
I have designed cams and exhaust for the stock engine. I have modified the ignition system, including changing the timing for both the cams and ignition system on the car you see here. More work to come.
I turbo charged my previous DeLorean and got well over 300hp out of it.
if you do a ford go with the aluminum block for sure. they weight as much as 80lbs less than there steel counterpart. Im a big mustang fan, but my dream car has always been a delorean.
They may weigh even less. The Cobra engine I have has an iron block and weighs over 700 lbs according to the shipping company that sent it to me. The aluminum version weighs around 400. I will probably end up selling my new Cobra engine because it is too heavy for the DeLorean.
European design combined with emission standards at the time The engines are quite reliable actually. The reason why Delorean used a PRV V6 was because parts were readily available for it (still are available today) and that they are easier to service than say a Ferrari or Lamborghini.
FYI the original PRV V6 motor was 130hp U.S. & ~170hp EURO.
There are lots of DeLoreans that have had V8 transplants. One guy put in a Lotus V8, many others have Northstar V8s, Chevy 350s, Corvette LT1, and I was able to shoehorn in a Cobra 4.6 Liter Supercharged V8.
You are correct about the DeLorean being designed for fuel economy hence the fuel efficient V6. I get between 21 & 28mpg depending on how I drive.
the Delorean was modeled after the lotus esprit V8 so im sure V8s fit but at the time they had no plans for a v8 and also said one wouldnt fit but either way it goes deloreans are bad ass
Now if only the delorean had a V8 engine instead of a V6........

SirTomothy 1 year ago
@SirTomothy for some perspective, the Delorean's competition in 1981:
-DMC = ~2700 lbs GVW 130hp
-Porsche 911 = ~2700 lbs GVW 172hp
-Ferrari 308GTSi = 3320 lbs GVW 205hp
-Corvette = 3300 lbs GVW 190hp
-280-ZX Turbo = 2960 lbs GVW 180hp
A 1981 Lamborghini Countach was 2645 lbs GVW. So by comparison, even by today's standards, the DeLorean is not a heavy car.
The engine isn't very big. It is an all aluminum 2.8 liter V6. At the time of its release, gas mileage was more important.
