@1xp4wq The vast majority of class 7-8 truck still use drum brakes. Disc brakes are available but they are more expensive and for most applications their advantage isn't necessary.
@1xp4wq depends on what weight class...80,000 lbs use air brakes exclusively, but all air brakes I've seen are of the drum style...the air chamber is outside of the brake under the truck
@vettelover2009 They do have air/disc brakes on class 8 trucks. I had them on an '09 Freightliner Cascadia. They eliminate the need for slack adjusters and have exceptional stopping power.
@thesoulsekr so wait...you're saying they have a hydraulic disc brake style set up...or air brake discs...ive only ever seen drums for air brakes...which is exactly what i said...and ive never seen hydraulic for any class 8 trucks ever...if so when did this come about...if not...then you obviously didn't read what i wrote...
@vettelover2009 They've been out and are available on class 8 trucks. The brake chambers are set at an angle to the discs which eliminate slack adjusters. Google: air disc brakes, and look at the photos.
@thesoulsekr so...since i missed the part where you said google AIR DISC BRAKES...I will reitterate what I said...They use air brakes exclusively on class 8 trucks...ive only ever seen drums on those trucks for air brakes...which is a true statement...I never said they didn't use discs...just that Ive never seen them...so why are you correcting me...oh yeah...you didn't read everything
@vettelover2009 I'm not trying to correct you. All I'm saying is that they have both. I've driven a truck with air/disc brakes, and prefer them over drums.
@1234tche Air disc brakes are an option but most fleets seldom spec them because of cost and the additional parts that must be kept in stock. They certainly offer superior performance but most fleets are cheap and will only use them when it is necessary. I was an design engineer for Volvo truck.
@1234tche Compressed air doesn't apply the brakes but actually it is the release of the compressed air that allows the spring to apply the brakes. This way any leak will result in the truck slowing and stopping, so the system is fail safe. The biggest problem with air brakes is keeping the air dry so that water doesn't accumulate and freeze in the lines.
I don't know of any class 7-8 brakes that are hydraulic.
@epistte Actually there are two means to apply air brakes. The first is the spring (or parking) brake system which is controlled by a push/pull knob on the dash and works as you described. The other is the service brake system which is activated by applying air pressure to a piston. I do not know why hydraulically boosted hydraulic brakes could not have a similar spring brake system. There are hydraulic brakes in some class 7 trucks.
I didn't know Tosh.0 had an automotive special.

@1xp4wq rear wheel brakes are usually drum, front are disc because 80% stopping power comes from the front wheels.
frisc45 3 months ago
@1xp4wq the usa still uses brake drums on their rigs because they offer more sopping power when they are powered by air.
