..much as your thoughts on human dignity are to be commended, you seem to be missing the entire point of this song. It was written by Burt Bacharach and meant as a plea for the heart-broken singer to her loved one to 'walk on by'...so he doesn't see her tears...since all she has left is her 'foolish pride' she doesn't want him to know she's crying over him. It's purely meant as a love/sad song..typical of the early '60's, and nothing to do with ignoring poverty stricken people on the streets.
