ferntri makes a good point in that TI has a different focus on a similar drill.
Thumbs Up Swimming focuses on a high and wide elbow recovery that drops the swimmer's weight into the water. The focus is not on the catch. The focus is on the elbow out of the water during recovery.
Thumbs Up Swimming uses a swimmer's weight and flexibility (or lack of) to swim effectively.
Thank you ferntri for seeing a difference that makes a difference.
The reason behind this stroke drill is to drop your weight so the swimmer is only focused on that aspect. There are basic drills that all swim instruction uses. As a coach, knowing the reason or focus for the drill or workout makes the drill or workout effective and lasting. For me dropping weight while swimming is the easiest way to propel ourselves. Thank you for your comments and giving the reasoning, dropping your weight, a try.

"The hand is always leading the body"? I thought actually the hand *never* leads, but follows the movement of the hips (core)...
(Very nice demo, btw)

That was TI stuff... it is supposed to be high-elbow catch (which he doesn't) instead of high-elbow recovery

good example for those with low buoyancy, excessive roll for breathing, good recovery for arms, relaxing style
