  • is it wrong that I still hold a grudge against germans for all this?

  • I get the great sacrifice that the British and Americans and Russians at the battle of Stalingrad, but the Australians made a pretty huge sacrifice too in the war. They didn't get a chocie what side to fight on yet they were pretty instrumental in the outcome of the war.

  • learning about this in history. BRAVE HEROS. rest in peice to all that lost their lives there.

  • This is one of my most moving movie scenes of all time. Incredible.

  • Filmes com plano-sequência é foda

  • Britain, was amazing during world war 2 we stood alone as Russia was fighting it own battle with the weather. We held back a fleet of planes and fought 3 nations at once in Africa the pacific southern Europe and northern. for 3 years alone battered and never willing to give up not just for British citizens but for everyone in the world thats why we have got to be thankful for, without the British we may have all died and never had the life we have today.

  • wht do u call tht thing wht the man is doing at 1.37

  • @missjadiie2010 its called the pommelhorse

  • I live here and I love how they subtlely framed out the massive steel plant there! XD

  • I wonder how many Urdu speaking Pakistanis died on the beaches of Dunkirk???

Now that is food for thought!

Now that New Labour has socially engineered us into a multi-cultural nation - Pakistani racists don't care for what the white patriot endured to save our tresured island from Nazi invasion.....

    Fuck the Urdus,

    Fuck the Sunnis,

Fuck those who hate and and want to see the downfall of Great Britain!!!!

  • @mrshellshock Ah yeah.....you go and invade Pakistan, India and numerous other countries, you pillage and take from them all their goods and then you get upset then when they follow you home. That is food for thought!

  • @hill1916 - You completely miss the point!

Urdus, Sunnis are welcome in Great Britain...its when they start asserting their culture and demanding things solely for their community, or if they start pressuring politicians to bend the laws to benefit them rather than the host population then that is something to be concerned about.

I hate those who hate Britain, its culture, its history etc.

  • Alot of work went behind that uncut scene. I watched the bit on the dvd where the director explained all how it was done. The horses are circus horses trained to go down, but they don't like to be down too long!

Very poignant and moving use of music and an English hymn.

  • Quality scene, almost as good as the tracking scene in Children on Men.

  • why were they killing horses

  • @12andrewrules

French cavalry. Probably werent allowed to take them with them, didnt want them to be taken by the Germans,

  • @12andrewrules cuz when the germans came they dident want the germans to have the horses

  • yokey123, you are a fucking disgrace to us germans.

  • Amazing to think this is actually Redcar in the North-East! On a serious note: good to see the French (or Belgian, or both?) troops shown, many were present and rescued, and it does get forgotten. And don't forget the many Allied troops who defended the retreat, giving their lives so many could be rescued from the beaches in the first place. No retreat for them: death or surrender only.

  • So how was the football son.?..We ran away as well...just like you did grand dad...thats Ok son....the apple dosent fall far from the tree....but we celebrated the drowning of 1000s of Germans civilians by sing Dambusters at the match and made utter fools of ourselves ....was it 1966 or 1066 Gramps....cant remember anymore son, cont remember....

  • @yokey123 What was the fucking need of that comment you stupid cunt? Ran away? Not likely you odious pathetic little Kraut. We were there time and time again beating Germany and Italy when we stood alone. Our Airforce brought down your pilots to the bottom of the channel where their remains are still there to this day, still awaiting to be washed up by the blue surf. We were outnumberd, Under-equiped and low on moral, yet it was our skill and spirit that led to your demise. Think about that.

  • @grobo11 Listen you Dole Weasel you ran away this week from Sangin in Afghanistan...just proves the point...always remember DONT BELIEVE YOUR OWN PUBLICITY...by the way has 2 Para shot any more Irish kids in the back and lied about it...I dont suppose I need hold my breath for the murderers to be brought to justice...DONT WORRY THEYANKS WILL DO THE FIGHTING AGAIN FOR AND YOU CAN LIVE ON IN FANTASY LAND....YIPEEEE...HUHUHU .....

  • @yokey123 Ran away? My arse. how are the German soldiers doing by the way? It must be a tough job washing the arses of the locals in Afghanistan and guarding crates of crisps, it's a hard life LOL! Leave the real soldiering to us Fritz, maybe you could commit genocide again somewhere else and elect another crazed Austrian leader, maybe Josef Fritzl? A rapper to lead a rapist country, very fitting isn't it?

  • @grobo11 Better wash their arses than SHAG them like your bum boys did at Abu Graib...bet you were there you little island baboon....probaly first shag you ever had....OOOooooo Abdul....Ooooooooooo ...you dirty slaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaag

  • @yokey123 You're even being called a disgrace by Germans, doesn't that show you something...You may be upset because we beat you in TWO world wars, but honestly, you don't need to get aggresive...

  • @grobo11

Mate. Why are you even wasting your time arguing with this prick. The guys just doing it for attention.

  • @yokey123

Never forget your granfarters crimes against humanity. Before you start, I dont like football.

  • @jgsouter the GRAN FARTER ...he was was a boy...

  • @marko6282 The next glorious retreat will be Afghanistan ...wonder if they will make a movie about that? Listen you come and go according to the instructions your American masters. Living in a dreamworld...try dropping into Prague sometime and see whats the Checzhs make of your cowardly, slimy sellout in 1938. Cowards that what those guys call you. I guess they dont watch fiction either. YIP YIP

  • The defeat a disaster, the evacuation a miracle. As always Britain pulled it off just in the nick of time. We make mistakes, but we learn and through the sweat of our brow and the blood of our brave men we come out triumphant, battered but triumphant.

  • sore loser???......................thought so

  • @marko6282 ...listen sonny ...you'd run home too...just like your granddad...once a coward always a coward...boo hoo boo hoo ...please we need the USA to save us...boo hoo...cunt

  • yes... a nice bit of fiction is not a bad thing when in reality your enemy lets you go. Still as WW2 for the english was basically one long retreat we better let them have their fiction...if you want to talk about WW2 dont forger russion men and US dollars...the rest is scotch mist....truth hurts I know...but its necessayr so there now...

  • @yokey123 no hitler tryed showing off with his air force, if he got his men to kill the english when he ahd the chance, he could ahve won the war. Britian was the only country in europe not to surrender. we lost all our eqipemnt at dunkirk to the germans. basically just leaving our troops and their riffles. and how about how the british pushed the germansd out of normandy by themselfs?

  • @ccclllsport The only country in Europe not to surrender. THEY HAD 35 miles of rough sea keeping the Germans out. England as a player in WW2 is bull, total bull and they believe it themselves , thats the really funny part.

  • @yokey123 yea and hitler tried to make us surrender by bombing us every night, he failed. we endured the wors bombimgs, yet we refused to surrender to germany, when they cut off our food supplies we refused to surrender, when they dropped the V1 and V2 on our cities we refused to surrender. so when he knew that the only way to win the war was to kill the british, he dropped fire bombs. he held firm, are you proud that your country killed over 6 million jews? proud that they killed 70 million?

  • @ccclllsport BOO HOOO BOOO HOO...and you ran home from Iraq after letting the yanks do the fighting ...and you dont have enough Helicopters in Afghanistan BOO HOO BOO HOO.....and you ran fron Singapore and Dieppe and even a couple of 100 Irish guys kicked your butts...Boo HOO Boo Hoo...clowns

  • @yokey123 no we left when our job was done,we had taken sadam out of power, within a few weeks. No america is taken over while we concentrate our forces on Afghanistan, which again we took the taliban out of power after a few weeks. It baffles me that you are actually 29, yet the comments you come out with are like that of a 12 year old.

  • @ccclllsport It's unusual to come across such a profound idiot in any walk of life as yokey123. As the man says, the mind of a 12 year old (and the spelling of an 8 year old). Yokey, you should stay out of public forums because people will think all Americans are like you and that would be a shame.

  • @yokey123 Germany and Italy couldn't even take Malta, oh i forgot to mention Britains navy Which stood pretty much alone in the Med won that battle of the Med as well,, it was mainly British navy ships in and around the med and the atlanic... The yanks were firghting the majority of there ships in the Pacific, where they had the most direct vulnarability. you really know very little about ww2. Britain stood alone for 3 years across the globe fighting in fronts in Asia, europe, africa. ur a dick

  • @ccclllsport what a wind -up of these idiots in their own language...THE YOKE STRIKES AGAIN....

  • @yokey123 hahaha your a bloody joke pal... Trying reading some historical facts before blurting out your egotastical nonsense (oh by the way you lost the war) of you are better.....Delusions of Grandeur springs to mind... reasons why Britain won the war by looking out for themselves 1. Dunkirk. 2. Battle of Britain. 3. Battle of the Atlantic. 4. Battle of North Africa... All of which the Americans played either NO ROLE or a very little role like in Africa and the Battle of the Atlanic... LOSER

  • 70 years have passed since Dunkirk,

    These men were Heroes ,

RIP The skippers and crews of the little ships and the brave lads who fought for us all in Britain,

    my we never forget

  • Today is the 70th anniversary of the Battle of Dunkirk. Bless your souls gents. We owe you our lives.

  • My Grandfather, Great Grandfather and my Great Uncle were on this beach. Only my Grandfather survived to tell me what is like. We will remember them.

  • Great-granddad was there, managed to get back to blighty and came back in the normandy landings.

  • I'm proud to say that my grandad was in the Lancashire Fusiliers and stayed behind to fight the Germans and to delay them from reaching the beaches. He was taken prisoner and spent 5 years as a POW in Germany... I am joining the Royal Marines when I'm older so I can also protect this country like my grandad did 70 years ago.

  • People were left behind as was most of the heavy artillery. About 70,000 British were left and I don't know how many French. Furthermore, the British contribution to the Allied offensive at this point was limited because we were crippled by huge debt from WW1 and then came the depression.

Also, Hitler didn't attack, hence why it looks so calm.

  • Why arent the germans anniahlating everything on that beach. A few artillery salvos and some divebombers would have them screaming for mercy and turning on each other. Not a particularly pleasant scenario but one that you would expect. They cant be holding fire purely out of good sportsmanship.

  • @hsybcmpny

They didn't attack because Hitler thought he could make peace with Britain now, so that he could concentrate on the Soviet Union. Luckily he was wrong...

  • Bloody stupid that, he should of just finished them and then he would of had loads of time to fight the soviets. His army could of beat the british without building up a sweat. Insane to allow them to escape. Well the british escape anyway, the french and the belgians tried to buy them time from what Ive seen on history docs

  • Well pointed out. Hitler always had respect if not outright admiration for the British and their Empire. He deliberately ordered panzer units to halt their attack and stop(which would have absolutely destroyed the forces at dunkirk).

He didnt want to kill hundreds of thousands of troops because he was hoping for peace, and was confident they would agree to peace negotiations.

Alas, the British didnt. Again, another instance where Hitler cost his brilliant generals the war.

  • In the army they call it extended lines. The Wehrmacht was exhausted, having completed one of the most astonishing moves in modern warfare, (I spoke to a chap once who had been in one of the German thrusts, he slept 7 hours in three days!). Trust me, if the could they would have.

  • @hsybcmpny

Also because there were units i the perimeter holding off the German advance. It was not clear to the Germans how effective their advance had been, and they too were exhausted by the speed of their success. Point is, the Brits were lucky and able to extract their army to fight another day...

  • .... ffs why do people that make these films/games always fail at getting what it was really like across??

Where's all the gun fire, artillery fire and explosion sounds?? For god sakes people could hear these sounds across the channel....

Would be a good scene if they didn't fuck that up.

  • It's because this is what happened AFTER the battle. I'm sure that during the battle, the artillery fire was heard from the other side of the channel. Though, that's not what this scene is trying to convey. It shows what everyone was dealing with after the battle. They wanted to show how disheartening it was before the evacuation, and what all of the soldiers and civilians were putting up with before their rescue.

  • no one was left behind, that was the key effort in dunkirt, NO ONE LEFT BEHIND.

  • for all the people who are wondering why the officer was shooting the horses -

Britain in them days never would of wanted the the horses to suffer, the horses where most likely injured or the because they know the nazies will just tie them up and let them starve.

  • Could someone tell me why they shot the horses?

  • because sadly they would have had to leave them to starve because they could not bring them back on the ships in preferance to the solldiers

  • they could be used by the germans and thus used against us for their war effort. Same reason there destroying the cars.

  • and yes leaving them to starve.

  • they would have to feed the horses otherwise

  • @tpiom they shot the horses for meat. its so sad! :(

  • So the enemys could not use them

  • what is the song the soldiers were singing??

    ITS JUST SO BEUTIFUL

  • It's a traditional hymn, "Dear Lord and Father of Mandkind".

I agree, it just underscores the haplessness of the scene so perfectly.

  • Epic scene! Perfect cinematography. A walkthrough the beach finishing with panoramic view, just perfect! And I just looove how music blends with the sing! Never seen this before

  • Epic scene, perfect cinematography! I looove when music blends with the song! I have never seen it before

  • Dammm, how i love this scene, i've seen it more than 10 times but yet i still love it, the music is great but the most important thing here is the CINEMATOGRAPHY, it's genius & i can't find a word to describe it... I love everything about he movie...thanks for this video

  • well done not only to dario marianelli for this music, but to all actors and crew involved for succeeding to make such a beautiful, continuous scene. it can't be easy to do.

  • the bravest men that britain has ever had...no one writing on the page would be here if it werent for these heroes...how many young english chaps ever think about these guys...not many.......

  • Freedom never comes easy...God bless all the heroes who died for their countries & those who died so we can live & enjoy peace & freedom....This is one of the most beautiful scenes in cinema history...For me it is...

  • @duncan2323 The british trully did something for europe. The only ones who would stand to death and could do so. Im trully thankful for their efforts in ww2. Even if they had to retreat i appreciate it very much, to even think that someone would be brave enough to do what they did. Finns and Brits, my favorites.

  • Britain didn't have a choice, it couldn't surrender. All the other european coutries could surrender because there was always hope, there was always briitan what could free europe. But for th british, it was etheir die fighting or be slaughtered because they would never surrender and let humanity fall into darkenss. imagine if britain did surrender. unless you where blonde you would be dead or be slaves, the whole human race enslaved or exterminated, the men cairred humanity on their shoulders

  • @ccclllsport Oh i didnt mean that the british are cowards or anything for retreating. They still kept going after that, and i admire it. Dunkirk spirit.

  • @duncan2323 I do all the time.

  • @duncan2323 yep .. true that ... a lotta kids these days just dont give a damn bout this, apart from a view, im 15 but i love history

  • great scene.

does anyone know if there is a full version of that song the quire is singing?

  • The song is called 'Elegy For Dunkirk' and it's on the Atonement soundtrack. It uses a hymn which the soldiers are singing called 'Dear Lord and Father of Mankind'. You can probably find both on Youtube.

  • I want to watch this movie now, looks good

  • Man it's a heart breaking movie...But it's just Unforgettable...

  • One of the most emotinal scenes. Reminds us what a cockup we made of defending france and the lives it cost us.

  • is that Ricky from Ultimate Force?

    (Danny Sapani)

  • what is the name of the song in this clip?

  • The music just makes this scene so much sadder, it's ridiculous... It's so chaotic, yet ridiculously beautiful, just amazing, never fails to make me cry :'( The soldiers' singing just gives me goosebumps, it's like poetry, this scene <3

  • this scene is amazing! mind-blowing.

    This film is a masterpiece.

  • I'm actually in this scene. I remember the day very vividly. We began lats in the morning. I remember we did six takes in all. This is take number five. The direcor want one more but the cameraman couldn't take it and colasped with exhaustion. Everyone there gave him a round of applause. That was a day to remember.

  • were you really? that it awesome! what was it like working with joe?

  • Yeah I was there. And as for working with Joe Wright. He was very stressed out and being a bit of a bastard that day. But Its understandable, that was a very difficult shot.

  • which one are you? (if you're in shot)

  • 3:49 on the far left going to pick up the drunk. If you find the deleted scene called Ice Factory, I'm the guy standing on the left

  • cool as

  • Superb film work. This is one of the single most powerful scenes I have ever come across. I liked the way Joe Wright showed it for what it was-chaos.

  • This is one of the most haunting scenes I have ever seen. The poor horses..... The music is perfect, especially the way it blends into the hymn.

  • This is one of the saddest scenes I've ever watched. It's just... chaos... When they shoot the horses it breaks my heart

  • I'm not religious, but I love that hymn. We used to sing it at my school.

  • Why do we strive for an unknown when if we look at the patterns of history soemthing like this will occur again but in a more catastrophic way. I am at the end of my tether. I really dont thinkn there is a reason for humanity and its helpless ways. I can like anyone enjoy the beauty of a sunrise or a new born child but these small things seem overshadowed by the materialistic world we live in that always ends up destroying and reiventing itself in a way that we thinks is improved.

  • Very valid point, and the primary reason why history IS important and why it IS valid. Those that do not understand history are destined to relive it.

Having said that, destruction is, like you said, something that seems to continue endlessly. Technology and landscapes change but human nature, and mans desire to destroy, never will. This is the reality of life on earth.

  • He hasnt forgotten them!!!! He's foreign and doesnt know the words or language... or perhaps he just never heard the song. Thas whats even more moving about the scene... the fact that despite not knowing the words he (and a few others in there too) feels the need to be there and sing with the comfort of others!! It's very effective! The chaos and the horror mixed with a select few singing in any way they can!!

  • i never thought of that possibilty...that turns the annoying part of the scene into the greatest part

  • i know. when i read the part with the horses in the book i said to myself "yes. it's sad but they'd have to do that." but then I saw it in the film and just burst into tears! evertime since, the same reaction. it's weird!

  • It's hardly a perfect scene....the guy at 2.46has forgotten the words of the hymn! His moment of fame as an extra ruined! :)

  • I'm sure if you did a close-up of even the most devoted choir singing, you'll always find one person mouthing the wrong words. That makes this wonderful scene even more human if anything.

  • The people of Redcar helped so much in the making of this film. The entire beach scene was set on Redcar seafront. Buildings were changed and mocked up, roads were closed off. A great film.

  • ok i LOVE that scene and that hynm is perfect 4 it 2, definatly put the whole film into perspective 4 me. and btw, there only horses and so what if the frencheat them its not that uncommon and they obviously had a reason for doing it, and it worked well you could see how affective it was.

  • Dear Lord and father of mankind, forgive our foolish ways.

Take from our souls the strain and stress,

And let our ordered lives confess, the beauty of thy peace, the beauty of thy peace...

  • This is film making at its core! It cannot been done better. And YES! Don't forget the 66.000 left to die there.

    Light a candle

    Buy some flowers

    Shed a tear

    Don't forget,...

  • This is beautiful film-making. The coordination and timing of this is almost perfect.

I always thought the opening sequence of The Player (Robert Altman) was the most technically accomplished single-take I have ever watched, until this....

  • Poor horseys : (

  • yay its redcar yay

  • 'Especially the bit with the Horses'

Thats right, dont shed a tear for the 66,000 British casualties. Young men who had their short lives extinguished, many alone, scared and without help....

    Get a grip.

  • Spot-on statement , wildstallyns.

I'm gobsmacked by the amount of idiots more worried about any trained stunt horses that may have been hurt pretending to lie down in this clip over all the real life British soldiers who never made it back from Dunkirk Beach. If it hadn't been for all those brave boys who took on Hitler (whether they died or managed to escape to fight another day), we wouldn't all be having this discussion now - not in English anyways.

  • Chillout pal, i think they were joking.

  • Sadly I don't think they are actually joking. After reading quite a few Atonement discussion boards, you wouldn't believe how many people view the gee-gees on the beach supposedly being killed as the saddest ever scene. Bearing in mind all the human tragedy in the movie, this just makes me dispair.

  • Given that we see French soldiers shooting their horse it's probably just lunchtime and they are feeling a bit peckish.

  • I think you'll find that the scene where the horses are being shot as is also the case where the military vehicles are having their radiators stoved in is a practice known as "scuttling". This is the done to prevent the enemy using any equipment that has to be left behind. When France fell to the Germans nearly the whole French fleet were destroyed to stop the Germans using the ships. This is common military practice :)

  • 3rd take out of 5. Genius shot!

  • God, this scene makes me cry, esp the bit with the horses. I thought I'd be OK, because I was fine in that part of the book, but seeing it was... and I mean you can tell they're just trained to lie down, but still. This film is amazing.

  • dammm...thats one long steadi shot..bit shaky but BLOODY epic, nice work whoever did it

  • This is not the final take, shown in the film.

  • to be honest, not the best Steadicam work i have seen, way to much side to side wobble and and arm bounce, and just to top it off, right at 3:41 something taps the sled, and the shot sways.

  • nice, how many takes before the final version?
