This track was too dangerous. We don't want drivers dying anymore, so we need safer circuits, and the old Hockhenheim track doesn't suit that level of exigence.
@mchngwa63 I know that, but bad things can always happen.... Really Senna wouldn't be dead if the safety car hadn't come and made his tyres go cold, which is slightly ironic I suppose lol. Anyway, someone could have hit into a flying wing- a spring at just over 100 mph almost killed him, what about a rear wing at 200? Or spearing off into those trees... Plus at least some of the drivers didn't like it. Straights take no skill, and these years the teams with the Mercedes engines would always win.
Fantastic driving by a young Jan Magnussen, i used to watch F1 back then. Now a days it's just not the same. Hope to see his son, Kevin Magnussen in F1 one day, that would make me watch it again ! btw what happened to Kiesa ?
I miss this circuit. Those blasts between chicanes were always facinating and a real challenge for the drivers. So often provided a great grand prix too. What is wrong with max and Bernie? They have defaced this circuit and many others like it. I just hope those plans for Spa don't go ahead.
Spa wont be changed. There was a survey by fans to fans, because there were plans to change the track. But the survey persuaded the owners of the Track, although BE an MM wanted another track layout.
@XxjennynjackxX what plans for spa? if they break it i will shoot to kill, although, the new bus stop chicane is an improvement as it allows passing.. but they better not screw it up like they screwed eau rouge. it used to be hard (say the drivers) but now its flat.
I seem to recall Jackie Stewart saying Magnussen was a lazy guy and didn't give his all outside of the cockpit. Wasteful indeed. He blew the British F3 establishment apart with 14/18 wins in '94.
well the attitude that Jan Magnussen had, was smokin' and drinkin' in his sparetime... not like the other drivers who worked out and ate healthy... ah well... i just hate the fact that Jason Watt could've been even greater in F1
The demand for cardiovascular fitness in F1 is huge, for many reasons!
The working load fighting the huge g-forces, and the vacuum created around the driver making him breathe thin air, in a helmet with poor air circulation.
The last is most present of the straights were the speed is high and the drivers should be able to finally breathe freely!
I heard that when Jan had a break from F1 in 96, he drove in the International Touring Car Championship. And people say that basically wrecked his driving style and natural feel for an F1 car. And when he returned to F1, he was still good but the sting and raw speed was gone.
The FIA is dropping the good circuits because other countries are willing to pay ALOT more to get a Grand Prix. So yes now we're stuck with shitty circuits! How dare they to remove Silverstone and Imola and force the German organization to change the good old Hockenheimring into a terrible track!! KICK ECCLESTONE AND MOSLEY!!
I hear you! If i had all the money like Bernie i would make my own private leauge, call it " The World Championship of best Formula cars " Rebuild all the great tracks such as Hokenheim, Imola you name it and make the cars wide like back in the early 90's. It's not the tracks that where dangerous. It was the cars. Imola 94 with 2008 cars. Crashing at Tamburello it the same compared to Kubica Montreal 07. Sack FIA! A private leauge with good old tracks would do the trick in my opinion.
the old imola circuit looks quality its a shame i was too young to watch f1 wen it was about. and also i agree the new hockenheim is fuckin shit, the old 1 is the daddy of all circuits. but the new imola was shit so they made the right decision takin it off the caendar
They absolutley destroyed this track..and the osterreich ring..nowadays we have to watch shit circuits like valencia, china, bahrain, singapore and more than likely this abu dhabi track will be terrible too...fota keep tryin to improve the 'spectacle' of f1,yet the best circuits on d calender keep getting dropped..no more imola or canada and silverstone gone in a year...bring back the good circuits!! :D
Simtek weren't an absurd team. They had a perty little car in '95 - Verstappen qualified it 13th at Monaco. They just ran out of cash from a difficult '94 season losing several chassis from crashes.
The old Hockenheim with the long straights used to be my favorite F1 race. I get so sad now when I see the ariel view and you can see the greenspace where the old track used to be.
i didnt have the chance to watch f1 in the 80's but i did get the great oportunity to take a look at the 90's and i find it was great. the 2000's will get better if they cut in the cars technology
like all argentinians i miss the argentinians pilots in f1. but now it isn't important of you are good or bad. you only must have money, and our pilots don't have it.
now fontana is in argentina and he still drives fantastic
many people (even miself) in those days miss the 80' with senna , prost mansell and so on... but the 90' were great if you compare then with the 00'!!
i wish this could be happen, but it's almost impossible, at least as long as bernie is the president of FOM/FOA. Plus, the old track is completely destroyed and trees were planted on where it used to be tarmac
yeah, i've seen some photos on panoramio(dot)com . The tarmac is completely gone and it's been replaced by small trees. Yet another one great track who tilke destroyed :(
They were running close together on the long straights and through the chicanes, plus one 'corner'. Keep in mind Hockenheim was a low downforce circuit where aero disturbances from other cars are minimized. Great pass none the less.
Todays Tilkenheim is sooo crap compared to the good old Highspeedmekka Hockenheimring!

lotwyo 9 months ago
@lotwyo When was the last time anyone died there? I don't recall any Hockenheim racing deaths in the last 30 years...
The track was dangerous when the opening section was flat-out, without the chicane posthumously named after Jim Clark.

so what that he was drinking and smoking. It's motor racing not the Boston Marathon. Smoking makes you loose weight which is good in thins case.

The last is most present of the straights were the speed is high and the drivers should be able to finally breathe freely!
And when I'm talking about breathing freely...
Michaelingolfhansen 1 year ago
...it's because they have to hold their breath in the corners and under braking, as they cant breathe at high g's!
So when they finally can breathe, it is vital that they can absorb as much Oxygen as POSSIBLE!
Thats some of the reasons why drivers have to be very, very fit, and why skipping your work-out and smoking is not a good idea!
I know the driving looks soooo relaxing when seen from the anti-shake-function onboard cameras, but it is all but relaxing!!!
