Marilyn Horne was a very stylish singer right across a lengthy career. She possessed one of the finest mezzo-contralto voices of the 20th century. She also inhabits a character - this is dramatic singing of the highest order. As tp key, there was no such thing as "concert pitch" until late 19th century and in some circumstances into 20th century. All the composers of the Baroque/early Classical would re-write tunes for different singers.-in different keys! Gluck was just the same. Well done M H!
don´t get me wrong i ADORE Jackie but this is like one whole key (or more?) lower! I have a recording of this aria in its original key sung by her and THAT is absolute perfection! you should really listen to it! the record is called "JUST FOR THE RECORD" :P
yes, if you listen to Horne's studio recording of the aria, it is definitely in a lower key in this performance. unfortunately, even taken down to a lower key, Horne is not is fine form. :(

Lower key, lower key, lower key... Is that all you people can think of?! How sad... Are you deaf to her one-of-a-kind artistry and perfect technique?

She sings like a rock!!
"Not in form..."
Cant imagine what form she wouldnt be in then?

Brava, La Horne!
She attacks the darker chesty tones more then anyone I ever heard.

it could just be pitched lower. Baroque pitching is usually a whole tone lower.

This area has been sung by many great singers but her version is, for me, one of the very finest...
