  • This is why I stopped watching shows about UFOs and things. Too much stringing along and fudging, not enough new information.

  • potholer should be paid for this kind of stuff

  • Thanks for the explanation of how this works. You are right. I wouldn't really notice as a general viewer.

  • Mind if I pinch this just in case your channel ever goes down?

  • *braingasm*

  • Status of conspiracy theorists:

    [ ] Not told.

    [X] Told

[X] Knights of the told republic.

[x] No Country for Told men.

  • WOW i'll never watch tv the same way again.

  • Thank you for yet another incredibly informative video. Really, and sincerely, thank you.

  • Any reason you showed Billy McMahon at the beginning?

Reference to how badly he came across/was portrayed by television?

  • They should have stuff like this on tv call it "real deal TV" or "what are they really saying that they didn't",to play christian advocate i suppose one could say science shows do the same and who knows if they are telling the truth.

  • You are awesome, sir!

  • Very interesting and informative!

  • I must admit that I have no idea what exactly Assange sad. More I listen less I am certain what he sad. Those Australians and their English :)

  • Not sure if you know this potholer but this is what people in the UK get when trying to see this video :

This video contains content from Channel 4, who has blocked it in your country on copyright grounds.

  • How do we know we can even trust this video? He just showed me how easily it can be changed.

  • Hmm, I have to think about that whenever I watch interviews.

  • Peter = pro

  • Intelligent,entertaining,concise,enlightening. Thank you.

  • You should watch the latest podcast of Joe Rogan with Graham Hancock, who has a lot to say of the criticism brought against him. I can agree with your use of cutting/editing, but lets be honest, all programs do this, even you. One must always keep in mind they are watching an edited show.

We don't know what is out there until we find it and dig it up, which means we must be skeptical of the typical views and dating periods that academics want to put on things.

  • The more and more we dig up, the earlier and earlier we find civilization and language predates what we thought.

When it comes to things like the dating of the pyramids, I have seen much that academics dismiss with no reason, only to put forth their own hypotheses as the favorable ones. Erosion data is one that stands out in my mind. It is also much more logical that such temples were ancient astronomical observatories, than giant tombs built for kids who would die in their 20s.

  • Otherwise, I pretty much agree with every one of your points. But, I am skeptical of the typical dating academics put forth for human civilization. I don't know, but they aren't very sure either, even though they say they are. I am comfortable with going by what is given as what we know, and speculation left largely off the table until evidence is found for it, but speculation on that table is what has fueled discoveries (like of ancient civilizations thought not to exist or be mythological).

  • I support your videos and mostly all of your positions. As a scientist, scholar, and academic, I however cannot support the typical view that humanity's history only goes back X years. This is based in the very fact that we continue to find more and more ancient civilizations that predate history and what we thought as the date for the invention of language, such as the buried city in Turkey being the latest find.

  • I counted 10 cuts.

You convinced me everything I've ever. Watched on tv could have been false.

  • I counted 10 cuts.

  • Formal higher education FORCED the early internet users in general to be more intelligent than today's average commercial user.

There were no climate-change deniers, no lunatics who blame Jews for everything.

  • I miss the good old early days of the internet (1985-1992): when it was basically a college-university thing when cool intelligent nerds with Monty-Pythonesque senses of humor filled the data packets sent between schools.

Now the internet is full of uneducated trolls.

I remember dialup bulletin boards. I remember my brother first introducing me to Windows 95 back in 1994 or so.

  • potholer54, you are simply the best youtuber i have ever watched. The clarity you make your points and the way you argue them not leaving a single space for doubt amazes me to no end. This video gave me a new and priceless capacity for analysing TV shows and for that i will never be able to thank you enough.

Please never stop, you are a positive force in this wicked universe. Thank you

This video really needs to be watched by everyone

  • Can't remember details or dates - but an Australian TV show used these tricks to make it look like a Catholic priest was involved in (or was covering up) a murder. Maybe Media Watch (ABC TV) has the details - interviews months apart were spliced together to create the illusion ... priests always wear the same garb, so he looked the same in both interviews.

  • Look, if Jesse "The Body" Ventura can survive a firefight with an invisible camouflaging hunter alien from another planet, then maybe he knows a thing or two about climate change.

Oh, wait. He DIDN'T survive that fictional alien. Never mind.

  • Being a Firefighter and going to an incident and then seeing what the news reported showed me these people don't know anything about what they are reporting. You wonder how they report world news when they can't get a building fire right.

''We will have more later'' means 'our reporter is out to lunch'

"we don't know at this time'' means ''the police and everyone else knows what happened but out reporter is still trying to figure it out.

  • I kinda knew a bit about this, but never to this detail. You did a fantastic job with this video. Kudos.

  • That Jesse Ventura Conspiracy hour is horrible, lol. I watched a couple episodes. "let me on this military base NOW!" "umm, sorry, we cant let you on the base unless you have permission" "WHAT ARE YOU TRYING TO HIDE!"

  • @grendelee haha...that show is the worst. I think he says every episode that he used to be a governor, Navy SEAL, and had a Level 1 billion security clearance. HE's had a very "interesting" career though. Not sure many can claim to have done everything he has. Wrestler, body builder, Navy SEAL, movie star, governor, and now conspiracy nut.

  • @Reip187

"and had a Level 1 billion security clearance"

You totally cracked me up with that line! It's ALWAYS such a giveaway of BULLSHIT in conspiracy and UFO circles (and, no, SOME UFOs should be taken seriously, but that's another thread).

  • @grendelee

" "let me on this military base NOW!" "umm, sorry, we cant let you on the base unless you have permission" "WHAT ARE YOU TRYING TO HIDE!" "

    ROFL!! LOL!

  • @grendelee

    ROFL! LOL!

  • I suddenly feel so sane! I stumbled on that "documentary" on that underwater rock formation over at Netflix. I was face palming and scratching my head all through the dang thing. I'm no scientist, but a THIRTY SECOND internet search convinced me it is a natural formation! This program aired on what? Discovery? some other "scientific" cable channel. I swore I'd never pay for cable for the rest of my life. Yellow journalism.

  • I feel like a noob ....

  • potholer sounds like one of those Englishmen that do commentary on wildest police videos.

  • Unedited: I agree completely with this video and the information presented. The fact that this is going on and no one in the position to do anything about it, does. This is despicable, dishonest behavior and I thnk this is wrong. These people should be exposed. ; )

  • I agree completely with this video.... [but] I think this is wrong. ; )

  • So the presenter has worked on a video years ago that had irresponsible reporting and misled others. Then he states that Jesse Ventura's team deleted pertinent information from their video, but he does not have the original interview or even a transcript from it. He is assuming a lot.

Good things our courts don't work on that premise or there would be a lot more innocent people in jail.

Just because the presenter has misled, does not mean others have, too.

  • Thank you for presenting this behind the scenes look.

Once people have seen a few examples it is far easier to spot "creative cuts" in real life.

  • The trick with inserting the breath pause was very well demonstrated. And with the dominant use of lossy audio compression (mpeg encoding, etc), the duplication of a breath noise would be virtually impossible to detect. (Without lossy compression, spotting a simple copy/paste operation is possible, but not easy.)

Seems like any concerned interviewee should insist on receiving full, exact copies of all original recordings from interviewers as a precondition for agreeing to be interviewed.

  • You, sir, are a treasure!

  • I saw a TV interview yesterday where there was a clock in the background. So I had an idea. To stop these edits, have 2 synchronised clocks. One behind both the journalist & subject (interviewee). WITH a Second's hand. That way every time the picture changes, we can see if it is, as they say, IN REAL TIME. The next time I;m interviewed I will insist on 2 CLOCKS.

  • As an audio restoration/recovery specialist, I can have great fun editing all sorts of speech to say something completely at odds with what the actual intent (or even content) of the original recording. What's even more fun, using the same software (Audition, though a slightly more sophisticated version), it's child's play to seamlessly modify the cadence - and even the emPHAsis - to make it sound completely unedited. Luckily, I only use my powers for Good, not Evil! ;)

  • Thanks for this video, this is great insight.

  • I didn't realise it was so rampant. That Ventura show is a joke, not even passing for entertainment. Part of a new wave of fairy floss docos for gullible people. I didn't realise Tony Robinson was such a whore until he did his new program. So what if any form of recourse do severely misquoted people have? Or is it a matter of that's what you have to deal with?

  • @judgeculph Journalist are like the World War One photograper. It was impossible to get the PERFECT photo, with the soldier running, the bomb going up in the background & someone being shot through the heart at the same time. So he FACKED the photos. Journalist when found-out also like to twist the truth again if they can so truth is what they say it is. Yes, it isn't easy to kill a journalist. Life, love and war are what they say they are. And let's not overlook what they are silent about.

  • I've always been suspicious of cutaways in interviews. All I have to say is, thank god(?) for youtube. There will always be someone here that is willing to call bullshit.

  • haha I'm an editor. He's 100% right. You will only see what I want you to see and hear. This is why most people don't realize their are being controlled and taught how to think by TV producers. Your grand parents were right when they said TV is an idiot box. You are taught how to react thru your favorite TV characters. This is why most men on TV are so docile. Its a passive mass mind control. Accept things not in your best intrust because the character you Identify with says so. Fox is the best

  • the stuff on media/science reporting is absolutely incredible. Incredible,.

  • This is an outstanding video. A lot of this may be common sense to someone in the industry but would not suggest itself to a casual, albeit intelligent, viewer. Thanks for sharing!

  • CLICK ON: disccentury. MY MUSIC, NEVER SEEN

  • This reason in itself, among a few other equally valid reasons, is why everyone ought to throw away their television as I did 17 years ago.

  • I hope everyone uses this method when wathc ing any documentary of any subject. Left or Right wing. It's the easiest way to spot a deceptive interview. Just try and examine the interview to see if there are cuts and if those cuts are meant for time's sake or another motive.

  • Those sneaky fuckers! Wow, I didn't realize it was that bad... That makes me angry, but I'm glad that I know to look for cut-away's now. I really wish you had about 100 million more subscribers; our world would be much less gullible.

  • If there is one camera always showitn both people facing each other then we can assume there is no editing. Now the question is, why don't people insist that is how they will be interviewed.

  • My most favorite misquote is that of Psalm 14:1-7, The bible clearly says "...There is no God."

  • @CelticAlphabet A misquote indeed, yet one that is more true than the unedited version ;)

  • This crap pisses me off.

  • Schoch seemed to be somewhat of a dissenting view in the japanese documentary, which led to sort of awkwardness from a standpoint to video was trying to make.

  • When Broadcast News came out I was a little disturbed by Holly Hunter's character (supposedly an experienced news journalist) having to have the existence of a cutaway pointed out to her. I'm still disturbed that more people don't examine what they watch critically. Perhaps videos like this should be part of the school curriculum.

  • FOX "News" is still the best at making scientists say the exact opposite of what they say.

  • Damnit! Now everything I will be abke to think about when watching the news and documenteries will be "Is this edited, hmm that cut was a bit odd, are they trying to hide something?" Oh well, it's one more way to question, and questioning is good.

  • Every time I see that Potholer has I new video up, I always get excited because they are so good. It's like have a good book you can read over and over again and share with friends. Thanks for the videos!

  • Ah, I love to have my channel working again, I had totaly forgot about this awesome channel and person <3

  • Whenever I watched Jesse "the Body" Ventura's Conspiracy I always took the approach that it was written as a comedy. The show is much more entertaining when you do so. He mixes in real experts who can be made to say almost anything with creative editing and barking loons who will say anything. The loons are give the same, or even more credibility, as the experts, and if you were ignorant you might believe them.

  • Damn...

  • i am watching this in the uk, fuck you youtube

  • Cool. This was the same technique Michael Moore used against that idiot Charleston Heston in Bowling for Columbine. He spliced 3 or 4 NRA-speeches together to make him look more disrespectful. But since charleston Heston is the devil it is okay to do so.

  • Fuck journalists

  • Such slimeballs! I mean I'm skeptical about tv programs/media in general, but I had no idea those cut-away shots could be used to cut and paste someone mid-sentence and make it seem natural!

  • I have new appreciation for when Stephen Colbert does his special field interviews.

  • I knew a little of this but thank you very informative, as always.

Of course I do watch some Bill O'Reilly and Glen Beck so am very familiar with absolute misrepresentation and complete bullshit used to hide the truth.

  • Thanks very much for a really great video. I understand the techniques for these kind of edits but now I will be on the look out for things taken out of original context.

  • potholer54 is the john pilger of youtube

  • The time, thought and effort you put into your videos is greatly appreciated!

  • I hear a lot of "he could be" etc.. I am asking, was the first interview being manipulated on 60 minutes? I am not sure if not?? Someone told me to watch this to prove that Assuage was being tricked in some way. I did not see that happening. I just want to know for sure, this is simply you explaining How it could happen

  • @ryoshi100 =was the first interview being manipulated on 60 minutes?= Very, very unlikely. 60 Minutes has an excellent reputation, and would not survive if it was found to have unfairly manipulated audio. Whoever told you this proved Assange was being tricked did not listen very carefully to my explanation of how cutaways are used.

  • @potholer54 indeed this is what I thought too. I think this is exactly what you are talking about. People believe what they want and stop thinking critically when they think their viewpoint is being validated. I don't want to make a judgement about the legalness of wikileaks, but I think he's clever enough to know who to give an interview to.

  • Tricks like this are why I'm a big believer that any and every interview of any importance should be made available in it's entirety online, unedited without cutaways.. In days past the technology wasn't available and you could never be sure what you we're hearing hadn't been reworked but with the web being what it is news organizations have the capability to do this. If we want responsible reporting, this is something that should be demanded.

  • Thumbs up if you want PotHoler54 on the Magic Sandwich show!

  • Wow. That last part with the sunken ruins is really deceptive. I never would have caught that. I've worked with audio and radio in school and know a few of the tricks but that is just beyond what I thought was possible to get away with from an ethical standpoint.

  • I'm really not surprised. I've always thought the news media were in the business of selling advertising time, and if they could convey a story that would shock the viewers, so much the better. It's really a shame that so much time and effort is spent on deception, when telling the truth would appear to be so much simpler. I guess there will always be "Snake Oil Salesmen," and dishonesty will reign unchecked, for the most part.

  • God I just feel disgusted now.

  • i have learned something newe, photoler!thank you for this information!

  • thanks

  • I always wondered why a 60 minutes interview would cut to the interviewer's uninteresting countenance. Thanks for making this clear.

  • This is a real eye opener for me. This is now at the top of my list of favorite and informative videos by Potholer54....and that's saying a lot!

  • Very enlightening.

  • A five question quiz about current events and scientific issues before allowing people to vote is starting to look better and better.

  • IMO: journalists who do as you describe in this video deserve to loose their job

  • Journalists love editing interviews because there's NO F*^&ING CARBON IN IT!

  • My solution to this problem has always been simple:

    DON'T OWN A TELEVISION.

  • @ROBwithaB, ROL

  • What Santer REALLY said, if you listen carefully between the edits, was:

"No presents for you this Christmas, you've been a naughty boy."

  • Thank you for posting this.

I didn't realise just how easy this was. Anyone could do this in Windows MovieMaker. All that's required is a desire and willingness to be dishonest.....

  • wow potholer's vids are so consistently good. This video makes so much sense but I had simply never thought to look for obvious cuts in media.

  • I work in the media and confirm all the techniques taught here. I use them often.

Even I would have a problem with so many cutaways shown in the later example. I think that if you were watching that program you already had your conclusions and so confirmation bias would be operating. The more cynical of us wouldn't even bother try covering up the edit.

Hell, just look at the 'Hide the decline" denialist bunkum.

You didn't need an independent investigation to work that one out.

    Oh well.

  • I'm never going to see a TV inteview the same way. Do you mind if I mirror this to share with my own subscribers?

  • @lazyperfectionist1 =Do you mind if I mirror this to share with my own subscribers?= My vids can be freely copied and shared as long as they are unedited and attributed to Potholer54. Thanks.

  • @potholer54 "unedited" Haha, you sly old dog you.

  • Geee I just had a really big idea!, using these techniques, you could manipulate public opinion, completly change what is said and make us go to war illegaly !

You know, just like what Fox Entertainment does, (cough) I mean news..

  • I can't even watch tv documentaries anymore. They just irritate the hell out of me.

  • For example, this week when MSNBC cut the end off of Gov. Perry's comment about the debt being a black cloud over the nation, and then claimed that it was meant as a reference to Obama.. inferring that he is a racist. MSNBC, being the leftist spin organization that they are, lies constantly in this way.

  • @Trauncher, Let me guess you love watching Fox news?

  • @1BustedMyth bad guess...

  • @Trauncher, Happy to be wrong. I don't like spin, either left or right, don't even like the terms Left or Right.

The whole concept is absurd to me, its just ignorance and biast nothing more.

We are all just people, some with good idea's some bad, all want to be heard, I'm neutral, yet get called left all the time. This us against them mentality is whats tearing the World apart.

Most of us want the same things anway, we are more alike, then unlike.

Together we stand divided we fall

  • @1BustedMyth :-) Given the video producer's obvious left lean, I was simply pointing out that this thing goes on every day on BOTH sides.

  • @Trauncher :-) Can't comment about the producer, as I don't really know him and it takes time to understand a persons point of view, I find Potholers work generaly to be of very high quality. No side is ever completely correct or completly wrong, hense why I don't recognise sides, but individuals.

I've worked with all kinds of people and i find that consistantly any far right, left or alternative tends to be pretty unreasonable and very judgemental of others.

  • @Trauncher, Please excuse my spelling, punctuation, I have trouble with motor control ect.

You are totaly correct that both sides pull this crap. I've found that if I challenge either group, they immediatly call me a member of the other and the same with religion.

far lefts have no idea of practical money control ect, far rights think nothing but money matters (and religion in certain countries!) and far alternatives think everyone but them is part of a conspiracy.

    like football teams!

  • @Trauncher, Sorry for having a go at you, your far deeper then I read your comment and misjudged you by.

I like to challenge everybody, to stop, take a deep breath, leave their biast at the door, come sit at the table and just talk with their fellow humans without getting all puffed up, just trying to score points, beat the other down at all costs.

The Political opposition at the moment seems to be prepared to sacrifice their own people and country for their own selfish agenda at all costs.

  • @1BustedMyth its all good. Although I disagree that upholding the constitution, empowering the free market, and demanding fiscal responsibility is "sacrificing their own people and country". it sounds more like doing what we should have been doing all along instead of risking our nation over tried and failed & arguably unconstitutional programs & federal overreach.

I think our problems stem from the 17 amendment. kill that, and everything would right itself. States should be in charge.

  • @1BustedMyth but thats an entirely different conversation.

    regards...

    traunch..

  • @Trauncher, I think we would agree that the common enemy is high level corruption or people who say they care about us, but don't really, Banks get bailed, we loose our homes. Here's to us finding a way to get along, and join forces to stand up to this bullshit, many hands make light work. Cheers mate

  • @1BustedMyth I think our problem is in the ratings. Companies only care about keeping people watching and if they know what their audience wants to hear why make them mad by telling them different. It's not a corruption really it's just running a business to produce as high of a profit as possible. I think we need to find a way to make honesty profitable.

  • "...throw away your television now -it's a repeat!" (red hot chilli peppers)

  • It's amazing that this video has nearly a 1000:1 pos/neg vote ratio, but so many people still believe the crap on TV without question.

This was a great explanation of it all though, incredibly well presented, I knew about the basics, but not in as much detail as this; amazing video Potholer!

  • Another great video! I guessed the right amount of cut aways! YAYAYA! :-p

  • this is brilliant!

  • awesome video!

  • Fascinating video. Thank you for uploading this

  • We are not worthy to view you!

  • The large structure off the coast of japan looks no more man made to me than the Giants Causeway in the British Isles. Regularity does not imply artificiality.

  • this has been soooooo educational for me! THANK YOU! I feel like alot of people were like me and didnt really think about it so much. and i tried to be skeptical! lol thanks again :D

  • wow... another sub for you!

  • Been watching your excellent videos for quite some time now without subscribing to you. Well, I'm going to correct that mistake right now. Thank you, again, for the informative video.

  • The level of dishonesty in the world is amazing.

  • can you imagin that?

  • And I thought lawers were bad.

  • awesome, thanks a lot.

  • Every time I watch one of potholer's videos, I always get this feeling of disbelief; I can't believe that I'm getting such high-quality information for free on youtube. Keep up the good work.

  • @alexanderalexandrou

    same here :D

  • @alexanderalexandrou Really, man. Guys like these really embody, like, the fucking spirit of the internet for me.

  • This is exactly why Michael Moore won't do anything but live interviews.

  • cgi.ebay.com/iphone-3G-16GB-Broken-/130559859172?pt=Cell_Phones&hash=item1e65f959e4

  • Someone ought to make a TV show exposing lieing journalists.

Can´t wach History Channel any more. If it´s not some boring action about lumber jacks it´s some made up shit with "experts" showing "evidence" of ancient aliens drawing lines and tampering with our DNA.

  • @potholer54 Could you make a video on how to prevent or make it really difficult for an editor to change the meaning of an interview?

  • 16:15 even after i watching a 16 minute video about video editing, i didnt see it till you explained it at 16:30

i guess i do believe what i see on tv

  • This blatant dishonesty is why there are so many conspiracy theories in the first place. Maybe we need some kind of peer review service for the damn news!

  • GREAT video.

  • What program is that?

  • @dunokuba

Cooledit.Or as it's called now adobe audition.

  • great video. you see this sort of thing all too often.

  • OMG nothing is real!

  • How dare you suggest TV is misleading us just because they never give us the full story on the pollies doesn't mean they aren't truthful. much maybe Hmm. Bugger. Next you will tell me that the papers are lying to us. PWND.

  • @magottyk PWND? What a moron.

  • Wow. Just... wow.

Thanks for the info, I never realized what all those reaction shots were about. My perception of TV interviews has just been changed forever. As always, your videos are awesomely fun and informative =0

  • Ah I'm learning...

  • OMG!!! THE TV LIES???!!!! :O

  • Thank You, Thank You, Thanks You!!!!

  • lol Ventura tried to tell his audience that uninstalled storm drains were actually tunnels for a secret military base under Denver Airport.

  • There is a "current affairs" program (read: bullshit) that my dad watches occasionally for laughs that does this sort of the thing ALL THE TIME. After I learned how "news" programs do this (from a comedy series, of all things) I kept seeing them almost everywhere. Coincidentally, this was about the time that I stopped using half-hour "news" programs as anything close to reliable as a source of information.

potholer, you are providing an invaluable service. Please never stop.

  • @Extraintrovert Chasers War?

  • Jewish media mind control for dummies.

  • @ns88ster

Follow your leader -- Blow your brains out.

  • @EikC I have no leader. I think for myself. Maybe you should try that one day instead of sheepishly following a punk rock band and quoting them as some sort of argument against the truth that jews do run Hollywood and the media. Hell, they dont even try to hide it these days, so do some research or shut your pinko commie mouth.

  • @ns88ster

Hollywood isn't run by Jews, it's run by Reptilians. Get your conspiracies straight!

  • @EikC Oh I see. Well then, that changes everything doesn't it troll.

  • Fox News 101

  • I don't spend much time on here these days, and nearly didn't watch this because of the length. But I am glad I sat through that, it was extremely informative and interesting....thanks for sharing!
