What did you expect, immediate paradise? BTW, the deficit of the food was gone very fast, and by 96 only memories of the food shortage remained. During Putin's regime, the oil prices increased which allowed Putin to spend lots of oil money here and there.

So why are so many of Putin's enemies put in prison (Khordovsky), poisoned (Litvinenko), or assassinated? I realize that Khordovsky was a crook, but Putin has his own "friendly" crooks that go unpunished.
I realize that Putin is doing many good things for Russia. But he is also weakening democracy, making it harder to replace the leadership. So if there is a bad leader, it will be harder to get rid of him.
You need a strong free press and opposition.

If Litvinenko tried to sell state secrets, he should have been prosecuted for treason in the courts. Russia and the UK do have an extradition treaty, although Russia did not honour it in the case of Andrei Lugovoi. Russia requested the extradition of Shipping Oligarch Yuri Nikitin. I have not heard about the success of either attempt, which indicates a serious breakdown in Anglo-Russian relations.

I think you should ask yourself, "Why does the Ukraine want to join Nato and the EU?" If their experience with Russia was great, WHY would they want to do this? Or did they have a bad experience with Russia? Do they feel like they will be bullied, like Chechnya and Georgia?
Russia did not allow separatism in Russia for Chechnya, but they allow it in Georgia.

The Georgian People's Guard under Valiko Jugheli acted with great violence. Few days later there were no living ossetians in the region between Tskhinval and Roki-tunnel.

Georgia only has 4 million people, but the Ukraine is 46 million. Now Ukraine wants to join Nato, the EU, and to kick the Russian base out of the Ukraine.
Everything Russia did was exactly what Bush wanted. Even Russia's friend Belarus is having second thoughts.
Now Europe wants to buy more oil and gas from Norway instead of Russia and to develop more renewable energy sources. Russia can be counted on to act like a bully, so easily manipulated by the USA.
