One of the last good years of Le Mans before Audi and then diesels began to ruin it. Man, I wish the days of the Group C cars were still around, but those Toyotas come pretty close!

one of the best runnings of Le Mans ever. plenty of action on and off the track, and a lot of tense moments. racing perfection, that is Le Mans racing. :)

@RaceKing62 yeah because  before the year 2000 every participants in LMP1 had a chance to win and it was more exciting. but after that audi dominated and now you absolutely need a diesel to win le mans. it's unfair nowadays

@adakar83 yeah i know the toyota gt one didn't sound as rough as the corvette because it had a small capacity turbocharged V8, the corvette engine has twice the displacement therefore bigger sound. but you have to agree that it's one hell of a good looking car. i wish toyota came back to le mans as they dropped formula one.

this race was the best I think in the 1990s. The top 4 in qualifying retired before the finish and the 15 won. The 12 starting in 5th fell 29 laps down and squeaked in 7th place. What a race!

I don't know about you all but Le Mans has not been the same since 1999 with 5 manufacturers competing none of these LMP2 rubbish carstaking up grid space and just barely finishing!

NOTE to the ACO: Get rid of LMP2 and you will have more space for real entrants!

Most of the manufacturers left after 1999, leaving just panoz, audi, cadillac (a newcomer) and privateers, so they had to bring in LMP675 (LMP2)

I sure wanted the Toyota GT-One to win this race. But had it not been for that late race failure, they would have won. Still, I'm not knocking BMW. These are some fantastic cars. This was the very first Le Mans that I can remember since being a racing fan. I guess the Audi R8C evolved into the future Le Mans-winning Bentley EXP GT. Always loved the Audi R8C. Great video!

Well, look at it this way. Before the Corvette's run of fame, the Chrysler/Dodge Viper GTS-R was the car to beat. Especially those of Team Oreca, who drove the wheels of those cars.

I thought the (then) GTS class wouldn't be the same without lots of Vipers, but the same can be said for the Corvettes. Now the challenge will be on the 'vettes downsizing.

I hate that toyota stopped using the Toyota-GtOne or (TSO20 for short). The TSO20 had such a high potential, all they needed to do was fix the gearbox problems.

Yeah it sucked that they pulled out but you know they pulled out of WRC and Le mans and BTCC to go into F1 all out which really turned out to be a dud for Toyota. Toyota makes great race cars just F1 is not working out for them.

I hate all the Audi wins in between really haven't had any ANY challengers at all except now with Peugeot but I don't like the "green" racecars initiative or the diesels it just isn't the same as it was at Le Mans in 1999; The Last good race!

Why did the Porsche 911 GT1 not participate in 1999?

They had an accident at Petit Lemans 1998 in the USA where the car flipped over. All the cars sold ($1 million a piece, 25 models to reach FIA rules) to the public were recalled after high speed test at Hockeinheim confirmed the downforce problems. Porsche did develop the V-10 in the Carrera GT to race at Lemans but with Mercedes winning every race in the FIA GT series of 1998. Porsche pulled the plug and the GT1 class was soon to be on the chopping block by the FIA.

I love both the GT1 Toyota and the Merc CLR (and CLK GTR for the 98 season), they were both very well matched shame they didnt win they deserved to. Both beautiful cars

a problem for Porsche coming back to Le Mans in LMP1 is the enginge ruling.

It was impossible for a non turbodiesel car to be competitive in the last years, and now they seem to change rules, that hybrids should maybe have a chance, too.

As long as a "normal" engine is competitive, and Turbos are prohibited, I don´t see a return of Porsche to LeMans.

yep. And, i read somewhere (motorsports news I think) that they are thinking of making the LMP cars look more like road cars. So we could end up with cars looking more like the CLR and the porsche GT1, which i personally think look great.
