My grandmother was one of those women,my mother wanted to go too but was too young . As army wife of a retired soldier i am proud of those women and how they helped the moral of those brave young men. What a great story.
@1bkrcp I couldn't wait to get out of Nebraska and move to southern California where I now reside...but seeing this video restores my pride in having been born and raised in North Platte. I wasn't cut out to be a Midwesterner, but that doesn't mean I'm ashamed to be from there, and specifically, North Platte. L4DFRED, you're entitled to your opinion, but I hope the passing of time changes your perspective.
A day when Americans were on the same team... wanting to win the war... and caring about one another. Great day in America. I wonder if this has also been removed from our US history books along with many other positive details.

@tarheelz1224 It wasn't the city or residents of Noth Platte that tore down that depot. It was owned by Union Pacifici Railroad. The residents went to some effort to save it, but were unsuccessful. See npcanteen(dot)net/ca03014(dot)html
Wonderful video. Very moving. And yes, these women who supported our brave have passed on the honor of taking care of our military and are still here today. God bless America!
Great story and a testament to the value of kind words and deeds for those headed into harms way. Awesome hospitality to support an awesome generation of people.
Wow ! ! This brought tears to my eyes, and I am a Canadian. So many young men and such a wonderful gesture from the folks at North Platte that even brought a man with dementia to remember. Beautiful and inspiring.
"America's Warriors have always stepped up to the plate for our freedoms and liberties and many have paid the ultimate sacrifice and some have survived to endure worse. HONOR THEM, RESPECT THEM, LOVE THEM & NEVER FORGET THEM! I salute you all!" Sparrow Six-Five!
I just saw a black marine in the video twice, grow up, racism is dead. Stand for something that is beneficial to all, not your world of hatred. I see alot of colors in our world, but the one that really matters is the color of our blood. The blood we should be willing to sacrifice for our fellow countryman. But instead we want to live in the mistakes of those dead and or soon to be gone. Thats why this country will fall, because we cant see through to the heart, the color of skin blocks it.
This is what the United Sates of America is all about. This is why I will give my life to assure that my children and grand children live and die in a FREE country. Tell Bam Bam to bring it, Im ready..............
From a random act of kindness in North Platte, NE to people talking about being ashamed and that our leaders are cowards is a frightful leap. We are still good people.

A quick glimmer of White Christian humanity in a completely insane unnessary fratricidal war that will lead to, if current trends persist to the complete destruction of Western Man and examples of these types of generositis that these young men breifly enjoyed before going to war will be lost in the very dark future of the Totalitarian Neo-Fuedalistic State that is now looming on the Horizon.
God bless our service people and the folk of North Platte. Thats what America and Americans are about. Sad what we have in the White House today is a disquesting display of the opposite.
@cyoteblues And thats not all Our New President Barry Soetoro aka Barack Hussein Obama is a Mulatto Bisexual illegal alien i'm not kidding folks. He was born in Kenya then became an Indonesian Citizen he is not legally eligible to be president of the United States in fact he is an Illegal Alien !!!
@craigblast - Are they allowed in now Einstein? There were lots of places where African Americans were discriminated against, but I would hope that we've overcome that. If you hate America so much, why did you serve in the marines? Doesn't make much sense to me. Cuba is only 90 miles away.
@NAGGERNUTZ You`ve have`nt overcame nothing, and speaking out against discrimination don`t mean hate, a matter of fact the only thing i hate is ignorance get it?
@craigblast - No moron, I guess we won't overcome anything as long as there are race baiting ignorants like yourself that keep living in the past. Instead of going out and earning your slice of the American dream, you take the cowards way out and blame it all on the color of your skin. It's a piss poor lame excuse for being a dead beat. You were NEVER a marine, because marines don't whine like little bitches. Yes I said COWARDLY. Like the cowardly way you post race baiting comments on my channel
@NAGGERNUTZ I make more money then everyone in your gay bashing family Nummnuts, you`re one of those cowards who`ve never experienced discrimination and embarrasses himself by brushing it off like it was lint. You hate your President and you hate gays, but this is what`s expected from some wanna be know it call who would rather complain about how the President is doing his job rather then run for office yourself. So quit you bitching about your President or leave the dam country, jerk!
@craigblast - Good for you moron. So, sounds like life in America has been pretty good to you. So why are you whining like a little bitch about America being a "racist piece of shit country"? I hate anyone who whines and cries while living in a country with the highest standard of living in the world... and any president who would seek to destroy it. I have served my country and I've served on city council. Where do you get that myself or my family bashes gays? Because I quote the word of God?
@NAGGERNUTZ It`s you who`s whining loser, you`ve even posted Biblical scriptures on your page that depicts What God thinks of the gay lifestyle?, why do you care and why are you passing judgement? You`ve even confided in other anti Obama and anti Gay people on you-tube, why? Know why, because it takes some of the pressure of being a failure when you can judge everyone else, the don`t look at my worthless life look at theirs strategy?
@craigblast - So quoting bible scripture is somehow passing judgement? Really? Did I pass judgement about gay lifestyle anywhere? If so, please elaborate. Where have I passed judgement? I smell a rat here. The department of defense says there are more homosexuals in the marine corp than any other branch of the service. Did I strike a nerve? What are you trying to say? Quit before you implicate yourself.
@craigblast - One other thing... there's no way that someone who spells and punctuates on a 3rd grade level makes more money than me or anyone in my family. You couldn't afford the cars that I drive, let alone the houses that I own. So you're not only a whiny little bitch, you're a liar. Go away fake marine.
@NAGGERNUTZ I guest if i was`nt tough enough to make it in the Marines i woulda had no other choice but to join the Army too, LMAO! Becuse i find it hard to believe that the Army would be anyones first choice, lol.
@craigblast - I joined the army because every member of my family has been in the army since the civil war. I know because I traced my ancestors back to 1854. In order to go farther, I have to go to the state archives. If you know anything about the marines, in the battle of Belleau Wood, marines were first named "devil dogs" by the Germans. Funny thing is, it was the army that finished that battle. The marines withdrew. Just like you... cowards.
@NAGGERNUTZ Lol, so i see where you got your coward genes now, especially if your whole cowardly family joined the dam Army? If i were you i`d be ashamed to admit such shameful information, but since most Army doggs are prideless slackers it only makes sense. And last i checked all Army doggs were good for were collecting the bodies that the Marines left behind, lol. This is why the Marines are known to be first to War and the Army doggs are known to be first to the chow hall.
@NAGGERNUTZ I know i`m good a bringing out the true colors of the losers on yt but you take the cake. I hope that every Marine pass and present read your dumb comment, then go to your family plot, and dig up their bodies, and then grind up their bones to make fertilizer, then sprinkles the fertilizer on the graves of all the Marines who died so assholes like you could be ignorant without persecution. This way your ancestors can`t be considered completely worthless anymore.
@craigblast - Well, I hope that when those marines come in here and read the comments, they also read what you said too... What was it you said? "God curse America this racist piece of shit country". I think any REAL marine has enough brains to see what a race baiting America hating imbecile you are. If I had been a marine, I'd be ashamed to have served in the same branch of service as a sorry, low-life like you. I think REAL marines love America despite her mistakes.
@NAGGERNUTZ If the truth be Known at least 95% of all Blacks hate White America. I mean they love American shopping malls and stores that sell designer clothing and all the pretty white girls also the affirmative action government grants for minorities to go to college that they don't have to pay back. the food stamps the welfare checks all the goverment EOE jods to name a few they love all that. They love seeing tens of millions of Non-Whites pouring in across the border it helps even the score
@rasputin63 oh wow, you don't like pheasant sandwiches??? shame on you, talk about good yummy, yummy, better for you than processes meat. whole grain fed pheasants, can't beat is you smoke'm and with brown rice.
thank GOD for people like this.a truly moving story.ALL AMERICANS should get involved with support for our military and families.go to VFW AMVETS VETERAN HOSPITALS.their families are are casualities of war also.if nothing else offer to do YOUR PART even in the smallest way.VFW AUX. LIFE MEMBER
Our Country has gone down the shiter today !! This is a great story You don't see the kids of today doing things like that .. The scum in Government have them brain washed that thay will do it all for them , thay know how to rase our kids better than we do !! IN GOD WE TRUST...Mike Kersey
Something should be done to tell people about this wonderful part of AMERICAN history -- when ordinary Americans gave out of what little they had (due to strict rationing) to tell our troops that "WE SUPPORT YOU!!!"
I am part of a groop that serves our military in much the same way, I pray we touch them in a way they will always remember, just like North Platte Canteen.
They are doing something similar up in Maine. There is a group of concerned citizens doing this at Bangor International Airport. This is where the troops coming back from Iraq and Afghanistan first set foot on American soil. They welcome the troops 24/7. A large group are Vietnam Veterans.
Wow. That is an incredible story. I wonder if we could find a town today that is that giving and patriotic. It gives us hope that the anti-American setiment is only believed by the current administration and a very few others. God Bless our troops and America!!!!
My town would do that even now. In fact in Texas they line up in the small towns when a soldier is being returned for burial. they wave flags and salute as the hurst goes by. I love small town Texas.
Great Plains people ,hospitality and self-reliance are second to no one. Why did Senatelord Ben Nelson feel he had to sellout these cornhuskers from North Platte for thirty pieces of silver?
I can remember when a nickel could buy a cup of coffee, a postage stamp, a piece of fruit or a newspaper. My parents used to tell me 5 c/ could even buy a loaf of bread or admnission to the movie theater.
This brought tears of pride to me as North Platte was my hometown during those years. Although I was a child, I knew of the canteen. My older sister sometimes went down to dance with the troops stopping over for the ten minute stop. We were very patriotic and proud of what was happening at the canteen. Thanks for making this video available. Who is the storyteller on this video?
What a great story.. for a while our country lost it's way and neglected our Korean and Viet Nam veterans but we are back honoring our veterans. Hopefully we never lose our gratefulness to our veterans ever again.
I've seen news clips of similar groups on the East coast (Maine ?) meeting troops coming back at the airports and giving them the same treatment - food, a phone call, cheers, a loving embrace and a hearty THANK YOU.
Those groups of folks meet every military transport coming in, 24/7. So that spirit from this video is still alive !!
GOD BLESS OUR TROOPS WHEREVER THEY ARE STATIONED !
Americans are the most wonderful, loving and giving people in the world. The world has the wrong idea about us The media is a great enemy of love. Bless every American. I am in the Army and when we came back from a tour, people at different airports cheered, clapped shook our hands and loved us, bought us food and picked up our tabs at the small sandwich stand. Experiencing that created enough strength in me to face yet another tour six months later. God Bless you all, United we stand. HOOAH!!!
This is typical Nebraskan hospitality that I'm proud, as a displaced Nebraskan, to say continues still today. Wish some other parts of our country cared as much. Too much apathy in our glorious country now (big sigh).
Connellsville, PA, women also formed canteen that met every troop train passing through town 24/7during WWII. Every GI received refreshments. My mother was canteen member. Jim Wolfe
My father Cecil Black was raised in North platte joined the Navy was stationed in Port Hueneme, Ventura, California where he met my mother on a blind date. He got out of the Navy, went home to North Platte in the middle of Jan, only lasted a few weeks, came back to Ca and married my mom. I'm honored to say they have been married for 59 years.
SEMPER FI my great-aunts and uncles lived there, my great-uncles went to the Pacific never to return, they were WW1 vets, they re-enlisted. I have been there, but no one in our family ever talked about it. Thank-you for sharing your video with me. I have a cousin that is Army Chaplain in Iraq, his 3rd tour of duty.
As a vet, his vid definitely brought a tear to my eye. Normally I don't go in for the proselytizing but our boys and girls going to war need all the help they can get whether it physical or spiritual.
Wow, one of the most striring stories I have heard in a long time. Thank God you guys have such a great national spirt. Something we lost years ago in the UK.
OMG! I lost my Dad two years ago on July 4, 2007. . .but he was also in the Navy and also from Pennsylvania...so I would bet that he also visited North Platte, Nebraska! Thank you one and all for a wonderful video and reminder of what our service men and women sacrificed, then and now! GOD BLESS AMERICA!!!
That was really neat. I hope more of us do this now, the guys still need it as much as they ever did, maybe even more. The support at their home may not be as good as it was during WWII
That is my home town..... I makes me proud of your work thank you i had no idea the people there did all that, my gram pa works for union pacific. He new about this but never told me.
That was a great presentationvery moving. Im sure that there are many more untold stories of what the Canteen meant to service members rolling across the Great Plains of Nebraska to distant places where the war waited. I do recall a USO waiting area at the Covington/Cincinnati airport in 1969 where similar kindness was shown. It is a very short time in my life though it remains always in my memory. And to all our veterans of all our wars I give a sharp Hand Salute
This is wonderful.Thank you for the love of these wonderful people that give so freely, to our sons & daughters, brothers & sisters, as well as Mothers& Fathers .
job well done. thank you for sharing your wonderful video with us. I am thankful you had North Platte Canteen to help all that stopped there to carry them through some of there darkest days and nights. God bless you all.
Great video. I live just outside of N.Platte. I actually heard about the canteen from an older friend a few years ago. Someone had sent her the original as a gift. As she told me about how it started and how many women had gotten involved helping she got teary eyed. She grew up in McCook (just south) and she said that her and her friends went up to help as well. (How she met her husband at 17)Americas did and still do the kindest things. What a great part of history. God bless the U.S.
Service people that appear in this documentery: Vincent Anderson, Marine Jean Cashier, Coast Guard Ray Merrell, Marine Tony William, Army Air Corps John Zgud, Army Air Corps
I was looking on the official website of the North Platee Canteen and they have photos you can email to friends. They are thumbnails that you can click on to see larger. The very first one I chose was none other than my dad standing at the end of the counter! God Bless those women who volunteered.
All I saw on this awesome video were "Americans" trying to give a little joy to our "military" - and for a job well done. I saw "no color" in it at all. Just people proud to be able to help our troops the best way they knew how.
I made a comment not directed at any person, I was slammed for it,, only in America,,, do I have no voice with out all the bull,,,say what you want My husband was in the service and he fought the war in the service as well as out side the service....live it and then speak on it,,,,
A "Realist"? More like a "real" racist. A "realist" would look at the reality of the pain and suffering our country ws going through back than as well as the generosity of these ladies and the bravery and patriotism of our "boys" back then. Only a racist would be looking for color. No matter if your husband served or not...you're a bigot that has been discovered
The reason you got slammed is because you're missing out on most of the world's beauty when you only want to see certain colors or races of people and ignore the rest. Search your soul. If you don't like black faces, imagine how much worse are black hearts: people who have no love for the diversity and beauty of all of God's creation, nor love for His children. Maybe you can still learn though. Please try. Because you are 65 years old now and it's never too late to learn grace & acceptance.
I have a wonderful video, Charles Kuralt's "Unforgettable People" that covers this story in depth and interviews the women of North Platte many years later. It is so great to see this on U Tube a great follow up to what I have seen previously. Don't think the video is still in print but I found it on Ebay.
I apologize, I didn't know I had to watch the whole 7 minutes, I did see a black solider 4minutes and 50 seconds in and a few more near the end ,,, thanks , not a racist, just a realist,,,,
I really enjoyed this video. I had never heard anything about this place before but after watching this video I really feel enlightened on this place.
Thank you for this video. My Grandmother and Grandfather met at the NP Canteen at a dance. This was a wonderful way to share with my children a bit of their heritage.
Mslill - YOU are a Racist - and yes as someone else has said - Also BLIND as a bat. Grow up and quit looking for excuses to be a RACIST. Geez un Pete.. SOME PEOPLE! JERK....
Awesome, and I have been there many times. Born and raised west of there in Dawes and Sioux Co. As a youngster I attended an air show at the AFB they had at Alliance NE> Thanks for a good trip down memory lane.
We should reach out to our soldiers & during this time we should not forget to reach out to the growing numbers of homeless people on our streets.
FYI --- Sacramento announced last week that they will force people form a "Tent City" on the edge of town. Where will they go? They lost their homes & jobs during the mortgage crisis. Be kind to every one you meet. They might need your love to carry them through the next day.
P.S. 60-90 days from now I might be homeless - Worse yet abandoned.
What a great video to share! Thank you! We still have ways to support our troops! Write, sent care packages. Many groups out there have names of lonely men and women who have asked only for a pen pal!
Right when I saw this I remembered my ex, who is an ex-Marine. He came back from Iraq without his left arm and nearly insane, but he told me he would do anything just to get a hint of love from what he and many of his friends had sacrificed for us. He had been one of the unfortunates to pass through Berkeley, and was immediately shunned from where he stood.
For those who don't believe in angels....watch this video. There are so many kind good people in the world. Like Mother Teresa said, not all of us can do great things, but we all can do simple things with great love.......
I am a South Dakotan who must agree that the heartland is a special place. Let us hold on to "that America" where we had a common language and a common love for our country and our brothers and sisters everywhere! God Bless!
there are still a great number of people doing incredible things for our people in the military, the only difference is the media generally stays away from reporting the good and instead focuses on the negative and doom and gloom.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Wait, don't blame "the media"...Look how many hits this page has had compared to the "doom and gloom" YouTube pages and gossip and celebrity mishmash. The media's even less to blame than the fast(fat)-food industry for giving what we want. Most of us walk around with blinders, go to any military town or hospital and you'll see many thousands of volunteers, some from churches some not. The government acts like it can do it all so we arent encouraged to contribute- other than "get out and shop!"
I thought the video was very well done. Too, bad there is not may people like those local women, now. I served my country 80-84 in Lebanon. I served so you great americans can bitch and wine, about Everything, with out having to worry about being taken out in the street and shot, just for opening your big mouth. Freedom is NEVER free.
Spike; thank you for your service! You are a true American. Times have changed greatly. The people who created the Canteen did so because this was "their" sons/brothers/nephews - in spirit if not body and this was a way of showing support. My parents spoke of how they helped men in uniform during WWII because they hoped someone was doing the same for their "boys". It is a different time - a time where we sit back and let the government do it (poorly). Not a good time IMO.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Too bad the troops fought and died (and continue to die) to make a few bankers (who fund both sides of a conflict) rich. By the way, they also invest in arms development companies like Raytheon, Northrop, GE, etc... and bribe politicians in both parties. Yep, the longer a conflict, the more money they make. Now you want to tell me why the war in Iraq drags on. Why the war in Vietnam lasted for 10 years. Those wars should have been won in 2 days with our superior weaponry. Profiteering on death.
You are one ignorant little peon. Easy for you losers to spout your childish opinions with no experience to open your eyes. I keep from hurting you punks by remembering all the good men and women who died for your right to be stupid.
What a beautiful reminder of when people of our great nation, come together in UNITY and LOVE!

What a marvelous and endearing story.
That America is gone forever. Regrettably, we've now become a nation of waring and dysfunctional factions.
We are diverse...but inordinately divisive.
I'm ashamed to be an American in 21st Century.
Our leaders are hollow, unprincipled and cowardly.

@craigblast - Pretty stupid statement from a so called former marine.
NAGGERNUTZ 1 year ago
@NAGGERNUTZ Black Marines were`nt allowed in the North Platte Canteen even after World War 2 numnuts.
craigblast 1 year ago
@craigblast - Are they allowed in now Einstein? There were lots of places where African Americans were discriminated against, but I would hope that we've overcome that. If you hate America so much, why did you serve in the marines? Doesn't make much sense to me. Cuba is only 90 miles away.
NAGGERNUTZ 1 year ago
@NAGGERNUTZ You`ve have`nt overcame nothing, and speaking out against discrimination don`t mean hate, a matter of fact the only thing i hate is ignorance get it?
craigblast 1 year ago
@craigblast - No moron, I guess we won't overcome anything as long as there are race baiting ignorants like yourself that keep living in the past. Instead of going out and earning your slice of the American dream, you take the cowards way out and blame it all on the color of your skin. It's a piss poor lame excuse for being a dead beat. You were NEVER a marine, because marines don't whine like little bitches. Yes I said COWARDLY. Like the cowardly way you post race baiting comments on my channel
NAGGERNUTZ 1 year ago
@NAGGERNUTZ I make more money then everyone in your gay bashing family Nummnuts, you`re one of those cowards who`ve never experienced discrimination and embarrasses himself by brushing it off like it was lint. You hate your President and you hate gays, but this is what`s expected from some wanna be know it call who would rather complain about how the President is doing his job rather then run for office yourself. So quit you bitching about your President or leave the dam country, jerk!
craigblast 1 year ago
@craigblast - Good for you moron. So, sounds like life in America has been pretty good to you. So why are you whining like a little bitch about America being a "racist piece of shit country"? I hate anyone who whines and cries while living in a country with the highest standard of living in the world... and any president who would seek to destroy it. I have served my country and I've served on city council. Where do you get that myself or my family bashes gays? Because I quote the word of God?
NAGGERNUTZ 1 year ago
@NAGGERNUTZ It`s you who`s whining loser, you`ve even posted Biblical scriptures on your page that depicts What God thinks of the gay lifestyle?, why do you care and why are you passing judgement? You`ve even confided in other anti Obama and anti Gay people on you-tube, why? Know why, because it takes some of the pressure of being a failure when you can judge everyone else, the don`t look at my worthless life look at theirs strategy?
craigblast 1 year ago
@craigblast - So quoting bible scripture is somehow passing judgement? Really? Did I pass judgement about gay lifestyle anywhere? If so, please elaborate. Where have I passed judgement? I smell a rat here. The department of defense says there are more homosexuals in the marine corp than any other branch of the service. Did I strike a nerve? What are you trying to say? Quit before you implicate yourself.
NAGGERNUTZ 1 year ago
@craigblast - One other thing... there's no way that someone who spells and punctuates on a 3rd grade level makes more money than me or anyone in my family. You couldn't afford the cars that I drive, let alone the houses that I own. So you're not only a whiny little bitch, you're a liar. Go away fake marine.
NAGGERNUTZ 1 year ago
@NAGGERNUTZ I guest if i was`nt tough enough to make it in the Marines i woulda had no other choice but to join the Army too, LMAO! Becuse i find it hard to believe that the Army would be anyones first choice, lol.
craigblast 1 year ago
@craigblast - I joined the army because every member of my family has been in the army since the civil war. I know because I traced my ancestors back to 1854. In order to go farther, I have to go to the state archives. If you know anything about the marines, in the battle of Belleau Wood, marines were first named "devil dogs" by the Germans. Funny thing is, it was the army that finished that battle. The marines withdrew. Just like you... cowards.
NAGGERNUTZ 1 year ago

This way your ancestors can`t be considered completely worthless anymore.
craigblast 1 year ago
@craigblast - Well, I hope that when those marines come in here and read the comments, they also read what you said too... What was it you said? "God curse America this racist piece of shit country". I think any REAL marine has enough brains to see what a race baiting America hating imbecile you are. If I had been a marine, I'd be ashamed to have served in the same branch of service as a sorry, low-life like you. I think REAL marines love America despite her mistakes.
NAGGERNUTZ 1 year ago
@NAGGERNUTZ If the truth be Known at least 95% of all Blacks hate White America. I mean they love American shopping malls and stores that sell designer clothing and all the pretty white girls also the affirmative action government grants for minorities to go to college that they don't have to pay back. the food stamps the welfare checks all the goverment EOE jods to name a few they love all that. They love seeing tens of millions of Non-Whites pouring in across the border it helps even the score

This brought tears of pride to me as North Platte was my hometown during those years. Although I was a child, I knew of the canteen. Thanks for making this video available. Who is the storyteller on this video?

I've seen news clips of similar groups on the East coast (Maine ?) meeting troops coming back at the airports and giving them the same treatment - food, a phone call, cheers, a loving embrace and a hearty THANK YOU.
Those groups of folks meet every military transport coming in, 24/7. So that spirit from this video is still alive !!

HOOAH!!!

We need a completelly new tax code!
But Fairtax isn't it.
Fairtax pretends to get most of government revenue by TAXING the government.
Read page 148 "The federal government itself will become a MAJOR TAXPAYER".
States and cities will have to pay huge sales taxes on things like highways - prisions anything.
What happened to "Only people pay taxes"?
Let's see -- can't tax corporations cause they just pass it on - but you can tax the government??
We need reality, not BS.

A "Realist"? More like a "real" racist. A "realist" would look at the reality of the pain and suffering our country ws going through back than as well as the generosity of these ladies and the bravery and patriotism of our "boys" back then. Only a racist would be looking for color. No matter if your husband served or not...you're a bigot that has been discovered
cabritorsss 2 years ago
The reason you got slammed is because you're missing out on most of the world's beauty when you only want to see certain colors or races of people and ignore the rest. Search your soul. If you don't like black faces, imagine how much worse are black hearts: people who have no love for the diversity and beauty of all of God's creation, nor love for His children. Maybe you can still learn though. Please try. Because you are 65 years old now and it's never too late to learn grace & acceptance.
