One minute ago I discovered that he passed away.... A lot of "famous" people that we like and almost seem to know die. But I never had this feel that mankind lost - not only someone important, but something important. I will order his books one by one, and I will tell everyone I know about his philosophy. Rest in Peace Hitch.

@DeaconCliff, a great answer that i come across about morality is from a Richard Dawkins' response to a morality question. Search Youtube for Dawkins on Morality
@DeaconCliff, our morality has greatly improved over the past centuries. I dont think it became worst. If we want to improve our morals to be better, we should cherry pick the good things that we can learn past events and improve upon it, which is constantly happening in our society. We have tools, aka science, to help us decide better in improving morality of the place we live in.
Hi bxeatr I have a question I would like to ask Hitchens or any other atheist. Would you agree that our level of morality and ethics is becoming lower and lower? I ask this (I am a Christian) because both my wife and I work with youth. My wife is a teacher, and I work with youth in conflict with the law. Anyway, we were talking on the topic some time ago at how the respect for authority by our youth is so non existent, it is actually scary. We didn't think of discussing 'morals'... cont
pt 2 ...but considering that also, I would have to say there is clearly reason for concern. Are you concerned about our modern day morality, and our morality of future generations? I love kids, and would love to have my own one day, but back in my mind is the understanding that this world is becoming increasingly harder to grow up in. IE, there are more temptations and evil to draw kids into a destructive direction. Do you have any of these concerns of the future?
@DeaconCliff - When education, income and the surrounding environment decline, social problems increase. All of these have declined somewhat in the last 30 years, even the last decade of improvements won't change the fact the poorly educated assholes of the last 30 years are now having kids themselves.... Who can teach them morals when they didn't learn any themselves?

Dawkins is a dunce, Hitchens is much better informed. Anyone that does not know that substance equals soul for a theologian like Dawkins is not only ignorant but stupid as well.
It is more reasonable to expect that in 500 years time all "religions" will be regarded as a quaint quirk of a previous era of ignorance.
And, no doubt there will still be a few pockets of lunacy still squawking in the USA - the current level of pollution there will take somewhat longer to eradicate.
Hitchens never wants to admit he is wrong. Example, foreign policy. He never admits that the USA or Israel has done some bad, immoral stuff just like Noam Chomsky will never admit that we do any good. The truth is in the middle. We have done some good but we have also done some bad. Why won't these public intellectuals admit that they are imperfect in their reasoning. They want to put everything in a straight line, linear. It is not like this. Truth is multi level, like the M-Theory.
@JayGatsbyOdysseus You are completely off the mark here. Hitchens have always criticized the policies of Israel. He was also opposed to the Gulf War, Nicaragua, East Timor, Indochina etc etc. Chomsky however is only capable of changing the subject to USA whatever topic. Try to ask him about China and he will probably tell you about CIA's operation against Pinochet in 1973. What a waste of time. The old man is probably sitting at home jerking it off to Deng, Castro and Chavez right now.
@olavm91 Hitchens wants to wholeheartedly dismiss certaing people and nations without understanding that a combination of good and bad exists within us. For instance, he wants to deride Mother Teresa after she is dead. I never heard him being critical when she was alive. Hell, I don't like her going over to India and telling this overpopulated country to not use birth control because the Pope says it is against god. This is crazy. However, she did many good things fighting hunger.
@JayGatsbyOdysseus His TV documentary "Hell's Angel" was aired in 1994 when Mother Teresa was alive, and he published 'The Missionary Position' in 1995 when she was still alive. The only thing the woman basically did, was letting her patients die slowly in agony without providing them with any pain killers (modern science is 'anti-god' after all) while she prayed for them. The pain was a good thing she though, because that would bring the closer to God. Good riddance.
@olavm91 Not enough space here to explain Hitchen's linear thought pattern. Read my book, Small Town Bachelor Expanded Version. You can find it at amazon. I discuss religion, politics, race, sex, Scandanavia, George Bush, marijuana, and many other topics. It is a deep book but also funny. Make sure you get the Expanded Version. I rewrote some passages and tried to clean up any typos. You must remember that a documentary is to be objective journalism showing each side, not propoganda.
Don't get me wrong. Hitchens is the man and is a much better spokesman for Atheism but I do believe Dawkins is slightly more knowledgeable on most Atheistic arguements.
@claireshana Juxtapose The God Delusion and God is Not Great and it's almost an indisputable notion that Dawkins presents more competent and tenable arguments than Hitchens, who much more frequently, utilizes non-sequiturs, ad hominems and irrelevant syllogisms. Dawkins appeals to science as opposed to Hitchens who appeals to emotions.
Also, the Atheist-Fascist-Communist argument is among the worst Theists have ever come up with. It is an appallingly easy argument to refute.
@claireshana Hitchens is certainly more entertaining because he's an immaculate rhetorician and is remarkably knowledgeable on supposed biblical history. All excluded fields, and believe me there are a lot, go to Dawkins. He's got much better arguments against God's existence and his book the trounces Hitchens in that regard.
Please visit my channel for the unpopular truth about homosexuality.
A person does not need hatred or any kind of phobia in order to acknowledge important differences between heterosexual attraction / behavior / marriage / adoption and homosexual attraction / behavior / marriage / adoption. Even non-religious people know this.
Homosexual activists, with support from the media, have succeeded at framing themselves as noble victims; it's an effective way to push a social agenda.
Ironically enough there is reason to believe that the Isaac/Abraham story is actually propganda to get the group to move away from child sacrifice - and move to animal sacrifice (sorry animals). Puts it in an interesting persepctive if you think of a lot of the stories especially in Genesis as having some purpose in communicating to the group.
Indeed! It's such a shame that he got cancer. He is basically my hero! He made me realize how stupid religion really is ( I was a christian for 18 years, I'm 20 now). Hope you beat the cancer, Christopher!
Society is not that old. It took millions of years to evolve and we've only really got going in the last 6000 years or so. Every time i hear religious people speak about their bronze age rationalizations of the world i am reminded of this. I think future generations will laugh at how foolish so many of us were all because a book taught billions of people to not use the true gift we have: the ability to reason.
I hate it when I debate theists. It seems that I always loose. Not that I am that bad with arguing but I just realized that the concept of "GOD" is immune to argument. They can make this word mean anything. It is a powerful word actually.
@eldrinirdle Yes...and that's our problem. If Christians responded to common sense and reason, there's be no such thing as Christians. But you shouldn't lose a debate - they have no sensible arguments, no matter how well they state them.
Please visit my channel for the unpopular truth about homosexuality.

In 500 years there will be a cult..sorry, a "religion" that claims that Harry Potter was real.
They will get in charge of governments and torture those that disbelieve their tales, they will rule for hundreds of years until finally the people realize that their methods belie their claims of purity.
Then they will be relegated to mumbling chants on Sunday's in gaudy buildings.
@trigon1962 same goes for Star Wars....Sam Harris raised this point.......I think the "religious" wars over Star Wars will be between those who believe the prequels are legitimate and those who do not......and how funny in a gruesome way that would be to us all
@trigon1962 There won't be room for that in 500 years. In 500 years humans will either be wiped out, completely religious or completely non-religious. We're running out of space on Earth. Resources too. That can only ever end in war.
@Draeka I no longer believe the cries of "we're overpopluated"
You could fit the earths entire 7 billion population into an area the size of Texas (268,581 square miles), each person, man, woman & child would have their own 1,089 square foot of space.
Naturally, you would need more room for roads, water treatment, etc, but the point still illustrates how much room we really have.
@trigon1962 I am a believer, but I fully agree with what you say. Religion in its beginning was belief. But over the years religion and belief became two separate things. Most religion becomes false, but belief remains. And thats how God still tests us today.
@il9agr17 I don't mean to be cruel or a smartass, but iif you truly believe that "gods" can watch what you do, hear what you say and even think then you probably belong in a straightjacket.
The word "homosexual" is more appropriate and accurate than the word "gay".
A person does not need religion, hatred or any kind of phobia in order to acknowledge important, qualitative differences between heterosexual attraction / behavior / marriage / adoption and homosexual attraction / behavior / marriage / adoption.
Homosexual activists, with support from the media, have succeeded at framing themselves as noble victims and martyrs; it's an effective way to push a social agenda.
You know how they say Sci Fiction,is the the precursor for science fact?? Well watch any SCI-FI movie, and you'll notice they've ALL laid waste to religion!Except for the ppl that live like we do(IN THE PAST) in the movies. The more advanced species always jokes against GOD,and about how those other ppl that still believe a magic man is watching over them!! They all get a good laugh about the GOD PUN,and then they go back too work! The FUTURE SHOWS THAT GOD WILL PERISH!!
Thanks for these wonderful snippets! Mr. Hitchens is so eloquent and clear thinking. Wouldn't it be a lovely thing if we all had his ability to express ourselves so well? Best wishes to him.
I think many people forget how great Christopher Hitchens is when it comes argumens against religion and people under religion, he might be a terrible philosopher, but he is probably the greastest living athiest this day who dares to stand the hordes of religion without ignoring them like many of athiest usually do.
He truly believes that he is the first person that has thought about these. He simply combines his attitudes of self-righteousness and disdain for others that think differently. This, coincidentally, is what he accuses Christians of doing.
Historical revisionist & women's magazine hack Christ' Hitchens NEVER, in his rhetoric, endorses the plainly-written strictures of the U.S. Constitution: limited government, shared powers, checks & balances. His politics are of the Thomas Woodrow Wilson model: expeditionary forces, base-building, spying on Americans (to rat out the 5th column) & expansion of the Anglo-American empire.

I completely accept and enjoy that people hold beliefs than are different to my own. In fact part of my belief system embraces this fact without wanting to convert, correct or clash with them. To me every religion or faith believes it is the one true belief system and that nonbeleivers should be shunned or converted. That is monumentally ignorant and toxic. How can something be a thing of peace if it denigrates me for not believing in it. No god that I believe in would be happy with that view.
religion is the biggest disease in society today!! its a disease that is passed from parent to child, from generation to generation, like a birth defect!!!
@LadyScorpio39 Ah, I see. Muslims believe that the world would be a better place if only all people would believe in Allah. The crusaders believed that problems would dissappear if only all were Christians. The Nazis believed problems would go away with Jews, atheists believe all would be better without religion. The only "problem" that goes away is a different worldview that humans tend to demonize. There would still be wars, violence, persecution, prejudice and racism bec.of human nature.

Atheist here.
I hate it when I debate theists. It seems that I always loose. Not that I am that bad with arguing but I just realized that the concept of "GOD" is immune to argument. They can make this word mean anything. It is a powerful word actually.
Damn it.
eldrinirdle 3 months ago
@eldrinirdle Yes...and that's our problem. If Christians responded to common sense and reason, there's be no such thing as Christians. But you shouldn't lose a debate - they have no sensible arguments, no matter how well they state them.

In 500 years there will be a cult..sorry, a "religion" that claims that Harry Potter was real.
They will get in charge of governments and torture those that disbelieve their tales, they will rule for hundreds of years until finally the people realize that their methods belie their claims of purity.
Then they will be relegated to mumbling chants on Sunday's in gaudy buildings.
trigon1962 4 months ago 36
@trigon1962 same goes for Star Wars....Sam Harris raised this point.......I think the "religious" wars over Star Wars will be between those who believe the prequels are legitimate and those who do not......and how funny in a gruesome way that would be to us all
evenstrength 2 months ago
@trigon1962 There won't be room for that in 500 years. In 500 years humans will either be wiped out, completely religious or completely non-religious. We're running out of space on Earth. Resources too. That can only ever end in war.
Draeka 2 months ago
@Draeka I no longer believe the cries of "we're overpopluated"
You could fit the earths entire 7 billion population into an area the size of Texas (268,581 square miles), each person, man, woman & child would have their own 1,089 square foot of space.
Naturally, you would need more room for roads, water treatment, etc, but the point still illustrates how much room we really have.

@trigon1962 I am a believer, but I fully agree with what you say. Religion in its beginning was belief. But over the years religion and belief became two separate things. Most religion becomes false, but belief remains. And thats how God still tests us today.
il9agr17 1 month ago

Hitchen's is just a cheap whore for know-it-all nerds. He massages their intellectual g-spot to a climax in hopes they'll go out and buy his books.
It's a no wonder Hitchen's is so adored by them. The first thing a nerd always does after having sex is fall in love. Get well, soon.

LadyScorpio39 5 months ago
@LadyScorpio39 Ah, I see. Muslims believe that the world would be a better place if only all people would believe in Allah. The crusaders believed that problems would dissappear if only all were Christians. The Nazis believed problems would go away with Jews, atheists believe all would be better without religion. The only "problem" that goes away is a different worldview that humans tend to demonize. There would still be wars, violence, persecution, prejudice and racism bec.of human nature.
