But if America liked it (in a parallel universe), AD would be on their 13th season now, it'd be completely compromised and die an ugly death like all the others they draw out. This way, It will remain a gem.

It is my understanding the reason many BBC series' run so short is because BBC is an immense beaurocracy that frequently takes more than a year to produce season 2 or 3 of a series (Office for example). Not because Brits have some innate sense of when a series has run its course.
That aside I agree completely with the above statememt. It's kinda nice AD never had a chance to really jump the shark.
@RickyRob I wouldn't say it was the viewers' fault that the show failed. Given the opportunity, I think Arrested Development could have lasted much longer. The problem very much laid on Fox Network for continuously changing the time and date of the show so that those who did want to watch it couldn't find it. And the ads that were played at the time were awful. I would have avoided the show, too, if I had seen the ads first.
