PC manufacturers tried to tap into the "netbook" market about five years ago with the "origami" project, what came to be known as Ultra Mobile PCs (UMPCs) which ultimately failed miserably. They were too clunky, expensive, and underpowered. This can't be called a netbook as it's basically a glorified PDA, a fucking waste. The Toshiba Libretto line could be called the first netbook and that's been around for ages.
yea and i was hoping this thing would come back once they did a few other things, but i think the macbook air just set a new standard for sub notebooks which is gay cuz i hate macs, but its almost the same concept, but if they brought this back and improved it a bit it would just have to be alot cheaper than the mac air which it would be, that would be its only chance i think
This thing could have been soooo awesome. All it needed was the ability to run any OS and some standard ports. Instead Palm had to go with the kiss-of-death and market it as a "mobile-companion". STUPID! If they called it a "sub-notebook" and gave it full functionality BAM, everyone would trip over themselves to get it.
this product would be very helpful for me, ive used palm pilots for a few years and am about to buy the palm centro, and this device is just awesome for what it can do and the size and weight just makes it easy to carry with me at school or w/e, i hope they end up desiding to release it in the near future
This is a good device, I was just hoping PALM would come with something revolutionary. The hype hurt them pretty good on this one. Plus the price tag is a bit too steep. Knock it down to at least 300. Then I'll buy.
this thing looks fantasic- as a university student, this would be far more practical then carrying a laptop around.
@ kragus
The Foleo has built in WiFi + Bluetooth, and expandable memory through an SD and CF slots.
And for all those saying:
"OMG! whats the point!?!?!1 my laptop does all this already!"
you are forgetting that it runs linux- give it 2 weeks after it is released and it will be running <insert your favourite linux distros and apps> just fine.
What a pretty pointless device. Exactly what pocket is that meant to fit in?
Well why not just bring an ultra portable laptop? Just synch with the phone and it'll do exactly the same thing without this very limiting Foleo.
And devices like the Nokia E90 bring you both your normal phone WITH the big screen and big keyboard experience all in one device that fits into a pocket.
i like the idea but theres no point in usability; the time it will take for all the 3rd party stuff to come out (seriously, who wants to carry around a big screen just for email thats on a small device u have with u as well) is longer than the time it will take the iPhone to run the market by storm; this foleo wont make u listen to music and a palm treo wont do the job as good as a smartphone ipod;
FINALLY someone with some common sense !!! Can anybody see the Potential here?! ALL I do, pretty much on a daily basis, I can do with this thing. Web, Email, Docs, Spreadsheets.....thanks Google!!
And now with Google Gears I can even do that Offline.
I dunno, but I do see a future for this little guy, perhaps not this one in particular, but the next generation to come.
I read that it uses Linux at it's core with some type of Palm window manager on top. Why they decided to reinvent a simple window manager for Linux is odd.
My thoughts exactly with the Google Gears idea. Google ought to throw some resources their way.
He pretty much said it.. It's just a big screen and a big keyboard for your cell, or PDA... It's too big to be a portable device, and too small to have any power.. You would probably be better off carrying your keyboard in your back pocket.... My guess: this product will tank..
If there is ever a need for a bigger screen or a full keyboard that's where my MacBook Pro would come in! I really do not see the logic behind this new Foleo device...it is nothing more than a laptop impostor...a portable computer that missed its calling.
Palm, with its simple sense of innovation, has turned out a simple product that will never reach the heights of its potential in today's current market. Two thumbs down in my book, for the Foleo is destined to be a Flop!
thats exactly what im talking about; the big screen is supposed to be a mobile computer that gives u the environment you are used to from your home or work; that environment being mac os or windows doesnt matter; you just dont need another environment like this; i think its gonna turn out to be a flop as well; nice point there
so its like a computer with less possibility ? if the baterry last 24 hours and the price is below $1000, than it will be worth it. Otherwise, just another fancy gadget !!
the very same problem of industry.. A cool gadget with an awful user interface.
Plus if it only does what it says, then you need to carry a full featured laptop too, which makes you carry 3 mobile devices. Nah.. I dont think I like the idea..
Holly sh*t!!! Palm invented ultrabooks?

you cant use one at all... they didn't make it after all...
jkkmobile 2 years ago
@jkkmobile Yes they did! You can even find them on eBay! (Although the ones on sale currently are outrageously expensive.)
This was a huge flop for Palm unfortunately which may very well have put a final nail in their handheld coffin. (Well, that and cheap netbooks.)

is that the $100 linux computer lol
Ibalon2012 3 years ago
This was the first "netbook", only slower and expensive.
Glad we had Asus to shake the notebook market.
Anyway, i would still like to have a foleo right now. As a unix sysdamin, i would love such a machine. I dont need more.

This would have been a sweet product, since it's so light weight and small. Could have been useful for school work, too bad it was canned.

Bring a product that can use a normal phone to sync up with and link up with as a modem and you have a new customer.

Yep....I can care less about the phone zinc/connection.
This is the beginning, I see, of better things to come.
Give me one of this puppies with MORE flash memory
(it is quite possible to boot a full OS from it)
a wireless WAN built in, and better battery life.
....and that's it....the WEB will do the rest.
