Helena Bonham Carter just fits into Shakespeare like a glove. Wish she would do more of his plays instead of one Burtonesque creep movie after another, lol.
He has only Sir Toby for kindsmen and he's a drunk. She loves Festes(sp) because he will tell her the truth. He loves her like a daughter. And she's not up to suitors of any kind. And because she really has no realitives, she depends on her servants. Unfortuantely, Malvolio thinks he has a place in her heart because of it. He's the top of the servants chain and is egotistical. He's starting to believe that he has a place in her life that he hasn't. Strange.
He is right. We mourn because we miss someone. But if they are in heaven then they don't mourn themselves./The Count is stupid to woo her when she is mourning. He's in love with love and is spoiled. The heart can't be spit in so many ways. The fools in Shakespeare's works were the wise ones only playing the foolish. I like that that they mask their intelligence and live for putting down the arrogent ones. The high & mighty are egotists and the "fools" play upon that, like this one. :) Songs
@secretflavors Madonna is Italian for "my lady." ma-donna; my-lady. It's weird because in Italian, the word for my is "mia," but they used "ma," which I could only think of coming from the French word for my, which is indeed "ma." However, Madonna is actually a designation assigned to any painting depicting the Virgin Mary. That's the true meaning of Madonna, the Virgin Mary.
Helena Bonham Carter is my favorite actress I think. She's so amazing, very diverse in her roles and yet she adds such a great threshold to each making them even better than imagined. :) My fav! <3
@BatmansFavoriteGirl she's really gorgeous in a very unique way, i think a room with a view is where i find her prettiest, but she's indeed of of the queens of period drama movies
@TheWanderingAngel Yep, you're right - Malvolio has come to think of himself as a much higher status than he actually is, and thinks he is superior to Sir Toby and Sir Andrew, even though he is only a manservant.
Has Bonham Carter done any of the Bard's plays since Twelfth Night? Along with the Mel Gibson/Franco Zeffirelli Hamlet, this film proves her to be an excellent Shakespearean.
@mrstilney Although, of course, a skilled actor could make a joke out of the mispronunciation - viz, "Cucullus non fake-it - non face-it - facitit - fack it - monarrr-chum."
But as for quirks, I'd say lots of grinning and the occasional overly-exaggerated movements, such as bows and the like, (particularly when speaking to Malvolio, I would say). And, as I said, acrobatics would be a plus but that's a personal preference.
Break a leg! Feste is tied with Puck as my all time favorite Shakespearean clown.
I think that Trevor Nunn made an amazing adaptation from Shakespeare's play, but Toby Stephen is so cute and hot that I forgot anything else. Isnt he great?
I totally agree. The first thing I ever saw him in was "Jane Eyre." Have you seen it? I thought he was amazing as Mr. Rochester. But then I saw this and I was like "Toby Stephens? With a moustache? HECK YES!" I love him so much in this. It sounds so natural coming from him (from all of them, actually).
Of course I saw Jane Eyre!!! HE is the most amazing and sexy Rochester ever, And of course, he with a moustache its absolutely delicious. And that smile, that gorgeous smile of him. I totally love him.
Of course, I wasn't as big a fan of him in "Die Another Day". I don't know... I like him better as a hero than a villain. He's just so much better in period movies too.
Well... the thing about being genetically modified is kind of stupid, but anyway he is wonderful. Of course, the classics makes the perfect match for him..
Yes. Helene B-C's speciality period and a way to speed things up. I think this play was very fast, actually. And this lot have taken massive liberties with the text.
Odd though, Helene B-C is very awkward with a corset and a skirt, she just just stumps along. Why specailize in it if you can't move gracefully?
Just a question... in the first two videos of the movie, why does the count have his arm in a sling? I don't remember reading that in the actual play, and I can't recall there being any explanation in the movie... did Toby Stephens just hurt himself while shooting and therefore had to wear a sling on film?
You're right, that is not in the pIay . I think it has to do with the war between Illyria and Messaline (which is not in the play either). And it makes him look kind of weak too, and therefore, more attractive.
I suspect that it has more to do with the question of why he didn't go and do his own courting. I notice they drop out all sorts of lines that don't suit the chosen time period so it follows that the Duke would press his own suit if he weren't laid up.
I noticed that this version seemed a little modern for the period in which it was written. I was a little confused at first... it looked more like it was set in the 1800's.
Viola and her brother Sebastion were seperated from a ship. Viola pretends to be a dude and works for the Duke, which is the ruler of Illyria. Viola has a crush on the duke but the duke likes a girl named Olivia. Olivia's dad died and her brother and her mother. And said she will not like a man for 7 years, but starts liking Viola. Sir Toby is a drunk guy who tells Sir Andrew to go out with Olivia but really just wants him to stay so Andrew can pay for his beer.
AH! He's so charming I can't hardly stand it! Feste, my heart is thine!
