I am a Costa Rican and I know this is a true story. First time I surfed Pavones in 1989 Mr Foley gave me a place to stay for 5 days. All the locals saw him as the boss.

You mean Tom O'Neill ? I got him to come to CR so I had a friend to surf with, mostly we rode Pavones, Negra, Pto Viejo by ourselves in 1978 thru 1983.
When was head high at "Cantina" it was a REAL swell. Basically the object was to ride beyond Rio Claro , then past the "point house", into "three palms" the "corner", "cantina", & step off in the sand before the rocks diced up your feet.
Three set waves like that was a session. Then eat, beer, do it again, repeat!

I think it was in 1984 I was invited there when my friend lived and worked the farm. Arrived during a big south.Real nice folks.
